Stealth III (Paul Yaffe) license plate holder??
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:36:57 AM »

Good morning folks,  has anyone installed the Stealth III curved license plate holder on a 2013 FLTRXSE?  I know I have seen it on here but can't seem to find it.  Is there any major modifications that has to be done?

Thanks,

PJ

Thanks for the threads Fired00d.  Just don't want to get into drilling the fender.  They do look awesome!

No drilling at all. Pretty simple install. :)

Not hard, just take your time so you don't scratch the fender.

FYI:

The plate mount is a bolt on.

I did have to radius the corners of the plate to fit correctly in the assembly.

Instructions say to trim the corner of the plate for the harness to run through. I removed the pins from the connector and discovered that my plate holes were in the exact place to run the wires through.

There was also an extra grommet that fit the hole in the plate.

Put it all together and mounted it... plug and play with the exception of drilling the little support triangle for the different mounting hardware. (And wrestling with the two-sided tape that holds it to the fender)

Sorry, I should have photo-documented the process but I really wanted to put it on.

The other issue is discussed elsewhere on the forum is the slight chafing to the paint as a result of the factory mount and dirt getting between it.

Soapy water and #2000 wet-dry paper and 2 applications of compound (coarse and fine) made it right there.

Thanks FLTRXSE-2012, I hopefully will not have to get into messing with the paint.  I just picked up the bike a month ago, and don't think it has had enough time to scar the paint.  Your description will definitely help, thanks for the excellent details.

My scoot has close to 17K so it sees some road time... when I took the original assembly off the first day it came home to remove the reflector it looked perfect....

It's just something that happens with time and is easy enough to correct with the right stuff.

This is pretty well spot on.

Is such a simple mod that looks so nice.  When I had other parts in for paint, I had it painted as well.  Glad I did, and it really cleans up the rear fender.

I bought the Fat Baggersa Inc. plate holder.  Looks just like the Yaffe but costs less.  LED edge lit and looks perfect.

use lots of masking tape around the area before you start,  it has some sharp spots on the back you should watch out for,,,and be careful,,should have a grommet for wires where they pass thru that hole...  fun reaching in there with a socket to remove the cap inside the fender too,, >:(    great looking when its on,,,   no drilling at all      stuart

How did you get the bracket off the inner fender? I'm mid-disassemble / assemble- and the bracket won't come off from underneath.   :-[

Additional Suggestion:

Take the time to install your plate in the frame on your work bench and center it where you want it to be. Also decide where the renewal sticker should be since you will soon agree you won't want to take the frame off each year to put the new sticker on.

I hope Paul will design the next version with a larger opening to keep the POPO happy and a easier way to mount the backing beside those tiny screws that strip and get lost.

The bracket mounted under the fender- that this mounts to- did you remove it somehow to drill out the threads, or just drill it "very carefully" to not eff up the paint?

It looks great! Did you have to drill the threads out of the mount attached to the  bike?

from my thread.

I changed the tag mount to the Yaffe mount. There was no drilling of the fender, you have to drill out the removable plate behind the fender. The plate mount sits relatively tight to the fender. The wiring was plug and play.

Greetings.  Does anyone have mounting instructions they can upload or send me?  I purchased my bike with it on and don't want to jack anything up trying to get it off.  My new (to me) bike has tags now but I can't get the stupid thing on!  The back doesn't look like the pics shown here.
Help!

OK, big ups to the folk at Bagger Nation and thanks for the email signed Paul Yaffe (  :2vrolijk_21:).  I asked and I received.  I reached out and they were nice enough to promptly forward me the instructions.

Biggest issue I had with this product is the LED lighting was CRAP for a daily ridden bike and lasted about two years... by that time only one of the six LEDs was still lit.

Fortunately getting an inspection wasn't a huge issue but could have been if an inspector wanted to be a douche.

I haven't yet decided if I wanted to do the same mod on my '18.

Right now my 01 has been relegated to DD duty

Yours is not the Stealth III then.  This frame is made in three versions, and the Stealth III is specifically for the CVO and come with a plug installed that connects to factory wiring harness.
