Cleaning the oil cooler
« on: May 01, 2011, 09:03:28 PM »

How do you guys keep the oil cooler clean?  I have a heck of a time keeping the spaces between the fins clear.  Have been using a toothbrush and low water pressure (hesitate to use my pressure washer).  Position of the cooler behind the front tire clogs it up there fast, especially on back roads.

I use CRC break and parts cleaner every oil change to flush out road grim and possible oil that might have dripped down from the oil filter change.  I just spray it down real good then I use a dental pick to remove small debris from the cooler fins followed a small flat head screw driver to straighten out any bent fins then followed by a full wash and detail.  Not sure if this is the best practice for cooler maintenance but has worked very well for me.  Hope this helps or at least give you a couple of ideas.

I'll use the spray brake cleaner in can when the filter is off or I'll use a portable (small) steam cleaner.  I alway use the brake cleaner or the steam blowing from the engine side out towards the front tire. If there is debris that doesn't get blown out, I also (gently) use a dental pick.  I use a small "duckbill" pliers to straighten any bent fins.

I've been thinking about a mudflap so I won't have this problem.  Seems like a good idea.

Is that still going to allow enough air flow to the cooler?

Haven't thought about that!  Maybe somebody on here knows and will chime in.
