speed wobble?? on an 08 springer
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:36:50 PM »

I've  been noticing a bit of a speed wobble lately.  I've heard the front tires on the 08 cupped pretty bad and the new tire is reverse tread, does that help the speed wobble or am I the only one experiencing that??

Have 25K miles on my '08.  I replace front and back rubber each year.  First year I had significant cupping on the D407.  All replacements have been the D408.  Have not had any cupping with the 408.  I have not experienced any speed wobble with the 408's.  Are you still on the original 407?  How many miles do you have on it?  Can you see cupping on it?  I experience about 7-8K miles per set of tires.  The rear wears faster than the front, but I always replace them in pairs.  Check out the other threads on tires for more info - I have stayed with the HD Dunlops.  If your tire is not cupped - I would have HD check the alignment, balance, springs and fork/tree bearings, etc.

I also have a 08. New tires. At 80 plus I get a wobble. I have had a 89 & 01 springer also. Never felt this on them. I thought my 08 was doing it because I have 16" apes on it. Who knows. Harleys get more expensive and quality goes out the door on newer bikes. Thats why my 08 is for sale.

Hmmm....I've had my bike going 90mph (and I regularly go 80 on the highway) and no wobble.  Also have 12.5" apes - so I don't think apes are causing it (IMHO).

My 08 has 7,600 miles replaced 407F because of wear and cupping (bike had no grip). Installed 408F with no problems or wobble. How many miles on your bike, may need new tires or alignment.

09 springer. wooble more noticible on concrete then on asphalt at speeds above 60 mph. Cupping and wooble noticible at 5K miles. changed front tire to 408 at 6k miles. Drives great on both surfaces now.

Similar issue...my bike use to have some slight speed wobbles on cement only above ~70mph, but not too bad.  I replaced tires a few months ago to Avon's and have not noticed any type of speed wobbles.

I have an 09 with Elites all around, 408F on front.  Have been at 115 mph for 10 miles on concrete, smooth as silk.  Traveled across Montana on US2, 2 days 80-85 mph no issues whatever.  This bike has been in corners at 80 almost touching pegs and dead accurate.  Tire pressure and set up of torsion arm are most common problems.  The front end was not properly set up at 5K service and it immediately developed a wobble.  The bike now has 43,500 miles, so I do have some experience with it... I've bought a few tires.

My 08 on the original tyre started a vibration after about 3000ml, wasn't sure at first what was going on, but soon realised the front tyre was cupping. In my case once i noticed it, the cupping seemed to develp rapidly. I have Metzlers on my 09, and have never had an issue such as this. I'll be putting Metzlers on the 08 for sure.

Metslers are nice sticky tires, but I noticed that once they start to go, they go very quickly.  I've had better luck with the Dunlop Elites, sport bike tires.

Maybe the problem was alignment and is solved. Her's my 2c: I have taken my 08 FXSTSSE2 up to 90 mph a few times and I have not noticed any speed wobbles.. Handle bars are stock. Actually, it feels awesome! Much prefer to ride around 65-70

I havent noticed any wobble yet on my '08 Springer. I have only put a couple hundred miles on it since I bought it though. I have had it over 100 mph a couple of times on the autobahn. Bike has about 5500 miles on it with stock everything (aside from pipes and tune).

I put 16 inch gangster apes on my '04 non-CVO Softail last year and now have a pretty good wobble in curves at speed. I just figured that was something I have to live with after going to those bars, so I just slow her down on the curves.

My '08 runs out good by itself. In heavy traffic behind certain mini-vans and pickups and almost any 18 wheeler it becomes a handful due to turbulence.
I did change to the D408 and got over 25,000 miles on the front and still get 12,000 to 15,000 from the D407 rears. When I load up for a trip everything changes!
I guess my point is to be aware ofyour surroundings when the wobble occurs and try to avoid the same situation in the future!
