Title: '08 RED/SILVER CUSE - DEMO RIDE AT BUMPUS H-D JACKSON, TN
Post by: PHAZE on August 11, 2007, 11:35:22 PM
Four of us (three site members) made a run up to Bumpus in Jackson, TN today.  They had the Harley Demo Fleet there and I wanted to get on one of the '08 SE Ultras.  They had the red and silver bike in the fleet.  I'll post several pictures.  I did my best to make it look orange, but I kept seeing red.  There might have been a couple of angles where I saw the orange tint, but I felt like I was seeing more red than orange.  Some of our group saw more of the orange with sunglasses on, but less orange color with the glasses off.

Here's a shot of Steve1911's SERK, my SERK, and JR's SEEG.  JR's friend Mike also made the ride with us.

I'm going to post several pictures of the CUSE.  You can decide if you see red or orange.  The pin stripe between the red/orange and silver is an orange looking color.

As you can see, we had plenty of sunlight in the parking lot.

The new dash and indicator lights on the SERK look good.  The silver paint on this bike has little ghost flames in it.

Overall, I'm disappointed in the '08 Ultra Classic.  I've never been hotter on a motorcycle.  At one traffic stop my left thigh got so hot it was as if I had my leg against an exhaust pipe.  I really wanted off the bike.

I was left with the impression that I was sitting further forward on the bike.  It seemed that I was much closer to the windshield and dash than on prior Ultras that I've owned and/or ridden.

I thought that the seats looked cheap and not as nice as previous CUSEs (and other CVO bikes).  I didn't notice paint problems, but I really didn't look closely.

I didn't get the sense that there was any different feel on the throttle by wire set up.  I guess the MOCO worked it out so that the throttle would feel like previous, typical throttles.  I did not have the opportunity to get on the brakes hard, but braking felt normal as we rode in the 30 to 50 mph range.

I'm having some second thoughts about giving up my '06 for one of these '08s.  I'd like to find out if filter, pipes, and SERT would work to help reduce the heat problem.  I never rode my SERK stock.  I added the filter, D&D Fatcats, SERT and had the dyno tuning before I left the dealership.  I've never felt heat off my 110 on the SERK like I did today on the CUSE with the 110.

Preston,
I'm seeing orange.  Pretty bike, as are the others, but that heat challenge would have to be resolved.  It 's hot enough without the mill adding to it.  Are you committed to your purchase, or can you back out and hang on to that beautiful Haze?  With all these heat challenges with the 110, I'm loving my melon more each day.

Henry

I did a $1000.00 deposit, but the dealer told me that there would not be an issue if I wanted the money back.  I'm actually thinking about applying it to the extended service plan for the '07 SERK.  With issues that I'm hearing reported on the 110s, the extended plan my be a good investment.  I haven't made any final decision yet about the '06 versus the '08, but my '06 is a great running bike and I haven't had the heat issue with it.  I've already got the extended plan on it and it's good until 2013.

Bingo.  Sounds to me like you're pretty close to a decision.  Your Haze is awesome.  I know what I'd do.  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm seeing a Orange/Red color on the SEUC.  The color is Canyon Copper, right?  If you've ever been to Utah, some of the canyons out there are almost that exact color, depending on the time of day.

No offense to anyone who already has one, or is getting an 08, but to me they look like a regular Ultra with different paint.  And I really don't care for the way that front fender paint pattern looks.  Say what you want about the leather TP on the 06/07 models, but when you see one, you know it's a CVO.  I'll stick with my 103 too.  With the 04/05/06/07 batwing bikes, there are distinctive things about each of them that sets them completly apart from any other HD in those families.  I just don't see that on the 08.

I see some hints of orange in your pics, especially on the corner of the tourpak.  I agree with Terry.  The thing that separated the CVO Ultras from the regular ultras was the leather tour pak.  The 08's don't look any different than a regular ultra now.  Unless you look close and see it has a 110 and the screamin eagle on the back of the tour pak, you'd never pick it out of the crowd as an ultra.  That's just my opinion, but I'm glad I got the 07.   I haven't had the heat issues with my motor, but then again, I changed everything out right away when I bought the bike.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

No heat problems with my 08 SEUC, but I had the pipes changed to V&H Big Shoot Duals before I ever took delivery.  Also had the back-plate changed on the A/C.  The new bike seems cooler than my 02 Ultra.
My 08 oil temp has been averaging around 225.  Checked it yesterday after about a 30 mile ride in 102 degree weather and it was 247.  I am waiting on the SERT or PC to become available for the 08's.  With a SERT or PC and a dyno tune, it should run even cooler.
One other thing, the lowers came off as soon as I got home from the dealer.  Too hot in Oklahoma to run with the lowers.
And, looks orange to me.  Out of direct sun, looks red.  Most of the time I would say it looks orange.

Regardless of color, like Terry, I don't like the paint scheme of the 08 SEUC. The front fender and the way they did the two tone on the lower fairings.....too much cut up/disruption of the paints...IMHO.

Thats the first place I've heard of that has SE bikes in the demo fleet.
Bumpus HD in Memphis had the demo fleet on a Saturday and they moved it to Bumpus HD in Collierville for Sunday.  This was a couple of months ago, but they had the CVOs in that fleet too ('07 bikes).  I rode the SE Dyna, but I recall that they had the Springer, a blue Road King, and I think they had an '07 Ultra Classic.  The SEs in the demo fleet may be a great way for the MOCO to promote them.

The demo rides at Bumpus Memphis were in April.  I found a shot that I took that shows at least three of the SE bikes.

You can see a SE Ultra on the left side of the photo.  It's a black/orange jester.  You can see the orange demo ride warning label on the tank.

It's not as easy to see, but the blue SE Road King shows up.  There is a guy with a black HD vest sitting on the bike.  He's just over the tank of the sportster.

Find out where the demo fleet will be.  There may be more than one on the road.  You might want to confirm that the bike you want to demo is going to be available, but it's a great way to get a ride on the bike that has your interest.  I seem to recall CVOs being available at the demo rides two years ago at Club HOG in Chattanooga, TN.  I just assume that Harley has had CVOs in there demo line up for some time now.

I have seen the bike at Sturgis last week and I can tell you it is Red and no where near an Orange. I own a 07 in Black and thank gosh I was able to get my deposit back on an 08 it was terrible. My 07 has so many more features and the quality is better than the 08's. They took the seat and made it cheap, took the tour pack (leather) and went back to the old style, and went back with a silver finish on the engine. All I heard from people was "Moco saved me money this year"! For all that own the 05, 06 and 07's SEUC your doing great.

I think that I'll apply my deposit toward the extended service plan on my '07 SERK.  With the reported problems on the 110s I'm thinking the extended plan might be a good investment.  Maybe that's what the MOCO had in mind.  The mark-up is probably very high on the extended service plans.  They probably want to sell more plans.

That sounds like a good plan to me, Preston....you've got two beautiful bikes, and the 103 is a proven platform.  I hope you have no problems with the 07, but if they continue to have them, HD will lose money on a customer like you.   :2vrolijk_21:
