Will a 2008 6 Gal tank work on an 04
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:30:13 PM »

I have a 2004 Road King carb bike and I was hoping that someone could tell me if one of the 6 gallon tanks used on an 08 will work?

based on the frame changes i would doubt that it would be a direct fit. but you may be able to find a way to make it fit

04 Silver Road King,
Welcome to the site from The Lowcountry of South Carolina!
I don't know if the 6 gal. tank will fit or not, but there is probably someone on the site who does.

The MoCo of course says it can't be retrofitted.  I figure with enough tools, torches, and ingenuity there isn't much that can't be retrofitted to anything, but then the question becomes why bother?  The 5.4 gallons in the old tank is more than my butt can stand at one sitting anyway. ;)

That's a change that leaves me a bit in the dark also.  It's only just over a half gallon more fuel (I know, you're not saying "only a half gallon" when you're out pushing or waiting some night).

The old tank's crossover is a greater hassle for removal (quick couplers in the lines on both bikes means that's not a hassle anymore).  Aside from that, however, the new tank requires different seat, different dash, new tools to work on the pump/filter and some other changes.  Far more than just getting it bolted down on the bike.

I probally should have told you guys in my original post that my bike is a Road King  with that said do you all know if the same changes in general have been made to that tank compared to the glide style with the center mounted gas cap? I know you're wondering why I want to know if this will work. To anwser that question my bike is carb instead of fuel injection plus I have had a fair amount of engine work done and if it is possible I would like to get my milage back in the range of my wife's 03 SE Duece but I think I am going to have to do it with more fuel (bigger tank) I have had the bike tuned 3 different times and the results have all been the same not bad but at 36 mpg versus every one else we ride on trips with getting around 40 or better I can't run with them even with reserve

Not only does the MoCo say it doesn't but the few people I trust that work as H-D techs all agree.

I concur on the issue of butt distance. I never understood why they went to the bigger tank anyway.

From certain angles they look - - - - - - - - hmmmmm, not sure what I want to say here - - - - - - wrong I guess.

Marketing ploy ?
