Hey all,
I know the many talks of "what temp is ok" etc. My question is about it climbing and not seeing an end.
When traveling in <80f weather at 72mph or more, the oil (slowly) continues to climb and does not appear to want to stop. I try and slow it down so that it will stay below 255 but, I don't feel that is right? Am I off base here?

Look for posts on how to do a "sumping" test.
Did this bike do this from day 1? Is it tuned with some device or pure stock?

I take it you have a Twin Cooled motor? Is your coolant system working? Just a thought, I could be totally wrong
but that might be the problem, or you may have internal engine problems.

Definitely test the cooling system as it has been less than trouble free. Make sure the water pump is actually working and coolant is actually circulating.
Oil temps of 255° F aren't terribly excessive btw. Is this a new thing, or has the bike always done this?

255 degrees oil temp is just getting warmed up for a Twin Cam, lol.. I ran a a sender in the bottom of the sump. In boiling water it read 212. All 6 of my various Twin Cam Tourings fully loaded with passenger would finally level off at ambient air temp plus 200 degrees after roughly one hour at 80 mph cruise GPS. On a 90 degree day, they would settle in at 290. Seen over 300 many times. Especially at 10,000 feet elevation. Best thing I ever did was to take the gauge off and just ride it. ;D

I am assuming a 110 /255 cam and cats in the head pipe? Not saying the temp is out of line but these do run a bit hotter than some other bikes that HD manufactures. A stage one and a tune will help some but a cam change to lower correct compression and let more air flow though the heads and a tune will help more. A true 100% synthetic oil will also help. Not all synthetics are created equal and our laws of what can be label synthetic aren't the most straight forward.

I just went to the Black hills (SD) and on the way back took the wind deflectors off (top of crash bar under fairing) and it DROPPED my temps by 12 degrees plus ! :bananarock:
I ran it at 80+ MPH for the full tank, 78F and head temp never above 212F with oil never above 232.
It needed more air ! :-\

May be in the minority here, but I agree with the earlier post about not worrying about it. Synthetic oil will take a lot of heat before it is damaged and 300 degrees is not even close.

Agreed, I realize my Amsoil 20-50 will go to 500 without breakdown but, I should not be getting over 300 just riding the highway.
Removing the lower wind deflectors has surely helped !

If your coolant systemis functioning properly......
Then add a reefer, oil bud or BOTH!
