First time oil cap blew.
« on: March 11, 2012, 10:00:39 PM »

Yesterday went to quarter car wash and made her shine. As it was a good day for riding.... took off the long way into Phoenix via Vulture Mine road,
After 40 miles got on I-10 east where the speed limit is 75.  Went about 25 miles and felt something hot on leg and calf, reached down and pulled back my hand covered in hot oil. Pulled over to the side of freeway right then and shut her off.....didn't want it to catch on fire!

The good news... was I could see a Wal-Mart about mile down the road....jumped over fence and bought some ty-wraps and duct tape....lol

Then I rode real slow to the dealers....none in stock, so I bought one with a temp gauge in it.

Just before the ride I had added some oil....think I was running at full (checked when cold), so from now on...will always run when dipstick is
below the mark.

Nothing like some hot oil to get your attention. Glad it all worked out for you.

happens with softails in spring. When standing for some time oil settles and seems to be low. So don't add before the engine has pumped back all the oil after some time running.

Richard, after a couple of years use, those slip in type oil plugs need to be replaced.  When it starts to slip in and out with very little or no resistance, time to change it out.

Also, I used to wipe the inside of the throat of the oil filler neck before I'd put the plug back in it. :2vrolijk_21:

Thank you for the comments and hints.

Will check before each ride with the air and lights during a walk around.

Good advise here from JC! I'd always spray some brake clean on a clean rag and wipe the surface of the rubber cap and the inner neck of the fill tube!
