Rear saddlebag guards
« on: November 06, 2009, 12:30:12 AM »

Has anyone put the rear saddlebag guard kit on the '10 FLHXSE?
I'd like to protect the saddlebags from a tip over but, I like the clean clean look without the guards.
Guards or no guards, that is the question.

49282-09B Fits '09-later FLHX, FLHXSE, FLTR, FLTRX and FLTRSE3

Rear guards protect more than just the bags.  If you ever lay it down they can help keep the bike off your leg.

A few weeks ago, I was hit and low-sided and slid 100 ft on the RS, and would have destroyed my bike and my legs without it! Both crash guards (F&R) took the whole hit and saved EVERYTHING for me! I'd NEVER ride a Garbage Barge without em!!! Just ask Mike how his bike came out of the same crash without em on his '10 SESG! ;)

Trying not to think about it.....and the Saddlebag guards that I ordered in Aug finally came in--3 weeks after the accident.  Now they are sitting at home while the bike gets fixed. And yes....I will be ordering a nicer engine guard also!

National Back order from the MoCo. They told me I would not get them until the 2nd week in Nov, so I guess they came early.

Both times I've gone down rear guards helped.  One time a little and one time a lot.  And that doesn't count the number of times over the years you might just drop the damn thing and come away without a mark on the bike beecause of them.  Protection has a beauty all its own sometimes.

I know of several people that have dropped their bikes (will remain anonymous) at slow speed or moving around in dirt, gravel, etc. and dropped their bikes.  The only damage is a very small area on the bottom curve of the rear crash bar and the bottom side of the floor board brackets.

I don't have them on my bike but I do think everybody that's new up to baggers would be smart to run them for at least a couple of years.

I called my dealer to order the rear saddlebag guards and was told part backordered for another week.  I'm new to CVO and using any forum. This forum is the best place to learn from others and to get a heads up on problems. It's also the best place to get ideas on spending money on "Oh,I must have that". Really, the forum is a valuable resource and we all should make a donation once in a while.

We have a friend that went down 2 years ago without front or rear guards. His speed was minimal and he didn't sustain much road rash but the impact crushed his ankle between the pavement and the primary. He just started to walk without a cane a couple of months ago. I can't help but think that a couple sets of bars would of helped. For me, it's safty and comfort first, looks second. Becides, I'm old and ugly anyway, might as well keep the theme going  ;D

I got the old and Ugly thing going for me!
Anything that makes you more confident is a good thing.

Been down 4 times in the past due to inattentive Cage operators.
Never any serious damage to me. Bikes didn't fair as well. I attribute
most to good luck but learned one thing on dirt bike racing. Get off as it goes
down. Swung my leg over and sat on top of them rode cases as they slid on the pavement.

My son went down and was in a coma for 3 days.

My brother went over the bars and ate pavement on his chest.

In all cases a pipe wuoldn't have done anything to save the damage.

Good insurance is important we did not find out that State Farm motorcycle coverage
limits medical to 1,000.00 until my sons 37,000 bill was
received. I would recommend changing if you had them.

Paint and parts can be replaced but people parts not so easy.

Ride Safe!!!!

This is a good time for everyone to read there Motorcycle policy or call there agent/company. The $1000 medical spoken of above is pretty standard because the medical part is very expensive and EVERYONE looks at bottom line before coverage. And suggesting others leave SF because you bought low coverage limits does not seem like a good idea to me. I work in the ins field, not for SF but they are the big boy and have plenty of money and seem willing to spend it as long as you bought what you need. IMO.

I didn't switch because I didn't buy it. I have all my cars and home with them.

It is the highest medical limit they offer.

Personally I carry maximum liability 100/300/100 with increased
medical and underinsured / Uninsured motorist.

I also was a licensed broker in one of the previous businesses Ive owned.

If you have State Farm you have 1,000.00 medical.

I assumed ( we all know the definition)
that I would receive the same coverage as my other vehicles.
especially since it cost more than twice what I pay now.

Rear Rear Saddlebag Guard Kit # 49282-09B now available, in stock. I installed them in less than two hours, with coffee breaks. I think they look OK and might protect the saddlebags and my leg if I tip the bike over.

Just think of it as added protection, quit saying "Tip over" that scares me  :)

They look fine.

The guards protected my bike when I went down on it.  The real reason to have them though is to have a place to mount the leather thingies that hold your water bottle!

I had a low-speed dump with my '02 ultra on a gravel (read loose rock) access road.  I had the rear guards and the trim rails that go around the bags.  When I went down, the bag still got damaged, so did the bag rails and the bag guard and the engine guard, so instead of just having to replace the saddle bag and the engine guard, I had to replace the saddle bag guard and the saddle bag rail also...having all that on, just cost me (read the insurance company) more.  I was protected, ankle leg-wise, by the engine guard and not the bag guard, so......I dunno :nixweiss: .  I have them on the SEUC, but didn't have them on the 08 SG and I don't have any intentions of putting them on the SESG.  2010FLHXSE, I understand why you put them on, but to be perfectly honest, I think they would have looked better on the Spiced Rum, if they were black... :nixweiss:

Hoist, How was this test done? Did you just let the bike fall over (without rider) right & left?

Nope, we let the blue SG get hit by a car, sent him flying into me, had him go down and slide into my fork, and put me down too. We both slid around 100 yards. Yep, crashing sucks! Believe me, I wasn't out there testing this chit for youze guys, although sometimes it appears that way, don't it?!!! ::) ;)

My damage was minimal with crash bars F&R vs. the SG with no SB crash bars! :2vrolijk_21:

Does any have the "black" version on a bike with other chrome (not all blacked out)?  I am curious is the black will lesson the visual impact.

49282-09B , is this the complete kit or do i need something else (for a 09 SERG ) ?
Is the "under-saddlebag-guard" included or will the stock "under-saddlebag-guard" be used in combination with the 49282-09B ?
It seems to be the complete kit , replacing the "under-saddlebag-guard" too .
What do you think about using the new comfort saddlebag-guards ?
(But with them you need to order a few other parts additional , why ?)

That's the kit...as for the comfort guards--up to you, however you won't be able to put the leather drink holders on them.

If you look at the Comfort Profile Rear Saddlebag Guard Kit you'll see a before and after pic showing the regular guards and the comfort fit ones. My guess is due to the angle at the top of the comfort fit the bottle holder would not stay upright and would tend to slide outward away from the bike. :nixweiss:

Highjagger, You can find the PDF installation Instruction sheet on the HD site on the product page for the guards. You will need to remove, keep and reuse the rubber mounts and mounting slide from the original mufflers mounts.  Also, remove, keep and reuse the two brackets and the male part with the D shaped loop that you use to attach and remove the bags.

Few weeks ago lost footing on sand at a stop light and laid her down. No damage at all. Rested on the small steel plate at the rear underside of bag. Ordered the Chrome bag guard kit and intalled today. About two hour job. Not quite as clean a look with the guards but really worth the peace of mind, both for the bags and the wife's legs. Will post pics when I take 'em.

I'm leaning towards them. Another plus is that the seat reinforcments will not allow the installation whereas I will have the new seat. Fortunately my salesman said he will see to it that I get the re-designed seat.

Those guards will save your bags. They may take away a little of the sleek look, but if it saves a bag it's worth it. And you can get the leather harley bottle holder for one of them :huepfenlol2:

I received the p/n 49282-09B.  The actual loop guard portion is chrome, however, the under-saddlebag support and rear attachment are black (see photo).  I was expecting all chrome parts.  Should the other part be chrome as well?

If we were logical, we would all be riding non CVO.  Take a look at the Lindby rear footrests/guards.  they look good and protect the bags.

on the SESG the stretched part of the bag on the bottom will hit lightly on the ground just before the bars hit. Don't ask how I know......

Bought my wife a 2010 CVO Streetglide. Had the dealer install rear guards before it left the dealership. Don't mind the looks, we attach the HD leather pouches to hold water, disc locks, glasses, Raine-X etc. Saved paint and hide on her last Streetglide when she layed it over. Do whatever makes you feel good and don't worry about what others say or think.

One of the first things I put on my new '11 SG.  Once I watch a Motorcycle cop push his over at a Demo ride and rock it back up without a scratch on the bags, I was sold.
