Each year my organization host a conference for our business partners in different location throughout the United States. In the past I would always conduct air travel to these events for a number of reasons, but this year was different. I decided to ride the scooter and have some friends, who ride, join me.
Our conference would be a location we had been numerous times with once before riding the bike there. This destination did not bring a big desire for riding, but the surrounding states most certainly would.
Several of my road dawgs on this journey would be taking their first long trip. This could undoubtedly prove interesting. One of the dawgs lived in the area for several years and I would know a number of folks in the area too.
Time was of the essence since we wanted more with plenty on the agenda. Not lagging around and I was uncertain that I could heard these kats.
So, we headed out in the quest for Lucky Sevens, but time would tell if we would get ‘em.
-
Day One | Savannah, GA – Montgomery, AL, | 395 miles
Here I would meet up with three of the members of this krewe. Another review of the plans and in the early am hitting the roads.
-
Day Two | Montgomery, AL – Elk City, OK | 970 miles
After an early start, we hit the roads with the hot wind in our face. By the time we hit Oklahoma the temps were ~ 105° and rising. I had two Yeti water bottles always filled. Still not enough. Towards the end of the day, had my first bout with dehydration ever. Got off the bike and was dizzy. Stayed off for ~ 30 minutes. Back on bike but off again soon. Took me a while to get straight but once completed, all good.
-
Day Three | Elk City, OK – Las Vegas, NV | 1,080 miles
Had not planned to travel this far but conditions were good. Still in the 100’s but no rain. Did not have rooms at the locations I thought we would stay so pressed on til Vegas.
The temps were so hot I burned my right leg which took 3-1/2 weeks to heal.
Gas and Go Baby all the way. Got into Vegas ~ 9:00pm
-
Day Four | Las Vegas
We arrived one day early and this would be where the conference was being held. The Mandalay Bay would be my home for the next week. Business would need to be conducted until we go back on the road for fun.
Fast forward, at our conference, we had Sammy Hagar and Michel Anthony (The Circle) entertain us. I am a big fan and near the stage. They sounded great. This was definitely a great way to start the vacation. Played 1-1/2 hours and sounded excellent.

Day Five | Las Vegas, NV – Venice Beach, CA | 320 miles
Skipping to day five, excluding the work week in Vegas.
Had the scooter serviced at Las Vegas HD and an unfortunate poor experience. Took them over one- and one-half hours to check my in. Had booked an appointment however the guy that booked it quit. My new service writer was new too.
Did not want to keep my trailer while the bike was being serviced. Had to sign a wavier and I understand however made them aware of it at the time of booking. They left it outside and would not even place it in the building.
As to the work, they had the bike for six days and the work was not even completed. What was completed was against my request. Requested chrome oil filter, got a black one. Requested black value stem on new tire got a bronze one. Requested rear speaker pods be tightened and screws missing replaced, no even performed. My heated seat and gear no longer work. More than likely, they were not re-connected when the seat was off. Requested master tech, booked for one however the tech was new.
After all that, I was not going to let that experience get in the way of the journey. Small issues in the big world we live in. Besides I am blessed to have this opportunity.
Arrived in Venice Beach near dusk and we had dinner on the beach with some mutual friends. The beach has been cleaned up and nothing like it once was. Wish I had more time there but like the entire journey feel time will be tight.

Day Six | Venice Beach, CA – San Simeon, CA | 300 miles
Here I would begin my journey, once again, on the Pacific Coast Highway, CA 1.
The Santa Monica Mountains would keep the weather nice and cold. This was a welcomed treat given the earlier days in the trip!
Plenty of gorgeous homes along the beach and I am certain my lifetime earnings would not even come close purchasing one. That’s fine. I will admire from afar and appreciate the lack of taxes, maintenance, and burden of such a place.
One of my first stops would be to the original Muscle Beach! Thank God the equipment is not there to embarrass myself!

The Santa Monica Pier. End or beginning of Route 66. Home to a small amusement park, places to eat and a coastline of fun.
Too bad we are forced to have barriers due to the crazies.

Let’s go and check it out….
Santa Monica has had several piers; however, the current Santa Monica Pier is made up of two adjoining piers that long had separate owners.

After leaving Santa Monica, I continued the journey on CA Highway One. My travels would take me back through some towns I have been through many times before but each time is different. Quick stops along the way in Santa Barbara, retracing some travels with Vanmal and others.
A pull over in Pismo Beach to enjoy the COLD Pacific Ocean!
When by my strawberry farm, of which I buy locally at my Kroger. Nuttin’ beats fresh from the vine.
Then onward to San Luis Obispo…

Day Seven | San Simeon, CA – San Francisco, CA | 285 miles
This was intended to be a relaxing ride down the PCH and that is just what it was for the most part.
Started off with the thought of visiting Hearst Castle but after thinking about the amount of time we would spend there, the krewe voted another trip.
There was no doubt His light was shining down on us.

One of the most photographs bridges in California, the Bixby Bridge.
Opened in 1932 at a cost of less than $200,000, the equivalent of $3.16 million in 2020, this bridge is 360 ft long.
You see folks from all around the whole at this site.

After our visit to Virginia City, it was time to take the road less traveled, US Highway 395. This run takes you near Mammoth Lakes, Kings Canyon National Park Yosemite National Park and Death Valley National Park.
The temps where in the 100’s and staying hydrated was a must. A number of short stops along the way but they were short and sweet since we stayed in Lake Tahoe and Virginia City most of the day.
Besides catching all of those bunnies can be exhaustin’! ;)

Day Eleven | Barstow, CA – Page, AZ | 550 miles
Got an early start to head to Oatman, AZ!
Oatman started life over 100 years ago as a mining tent camp, and quickly became a flourishing gold-mining center. In 1915, two miners struck a $10 million gold find, and within a year, the town’s population grew to more than 3,500.
Oatman was named in honor of Olive Oatman, who as a young girl, was kidnapped by an Apache tribe, sold to Mojave Indians and later rescued in a trade in 1857 near the current site of the town. Oatman was served by a narrow gauge rail line between 1903 and 1905 that ran 17 miles to the Colorado River near Needles, California.

Oatman is a fun place to visit — an authentic old western town with burros roaming the streets and gunfights staged on weekends. The burros are tame and can be hand fed.

The Oatman Hotel, built in 1902, is the oldest two-story adobe structure in Mojave County and has housed many miners, movie stars, politicians and other scoundrels.

Oatman’s “wild” burros are the descendants of burros brought here by the miners in the late 1800s; when the miners no longer needed them, they were turned loose.

The Grand Canyon has an elevation spanning from around 2,000 feet to over 8,000 feet, allowing it to experience a variety of weather conditions. As a result, the temperature generally increases by 5.5 degrees with each 1,000-feet loss in elevation.

Day Twelve | Page, AZ – Cortez, CO | 250 miles
So for years I have been attempting to get into this area and take a tour of Antelope Canyon. There was always something that prevented it. Covid, cancelled trips, trip issues but this time I made it work.
The Antelope Canyon is protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation and only authorized tour companies can take visitors to the canyon. Safety and preventing vandalism are the main reasons why everyone needs a guided tour; the canyon became unavailable to the public in 1997.
In the past, one of the tour companies offered a photographer’s tour but this is no longer available. In addition, you are limited on the equipment you can take since Covid. Everyone took photographs but the best ones I am using were mostly from iPhones, which I do not have but my krewe did.

Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding and other sub-aerial processes.

Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways.

Over time the passageways eroded away, deepening the corridors and smoothing hard edges to form characteristic "flowing" shapes.

At the time of my visit, there were only three groups in the canyon. Very nice. However it can get full and pushed but that was not the case for us. The ride to the canyon is very bumpy and the guides go fast so be prepared for Mr. Toads Wild Ride! Fun but you will fly around that truck. My bus was enclosed with air and all the comforts. But some of the other groups are not. If you choose that case, be prepared to be very dirty by the time you get there.

Day Thirteen | Cortez, CO – Ouray, CO | 150 miles
A nice and easy day on the backroads near the San Miguel Peak to Ouray, CO. Along the way, another visit to Telluride, CO.
It had been raining for most of the day but once we parked the bikes, the rain stopped. Thank you, Lord.

The Telluride Mountains contain 350 miles of tunnels, enough to reach from San Francisco to Los Angles. Billions of dollars in gold, silver, cooper, lead and zinc have been produced here since 1880 and the area is still being mined.

It was late and we were lost but found a parker ranger to point us in the right direction. Made it back a few hours late but all good.

Day Fifteen | Ouray, CO – Santa Rosa, NM | 450 miles
So, our day would consist of riding the Million Dollar Highway with a stop in Silverton. There we would enjoy a cup of coffee / hot chocolate.
From there a lunch in Durango with a stop or two along the way.
Normally I would stay in Tucumcari, NM but decided to try Santa Rosa, NM. Here we would have dinner with some truckers and enjoyed a great conversation.
-
Day Sixteen | Santa Rosa, NM -Oklahoma City, OH | 480 miles
After a relaxing night it was time to hit the road towards Oklahoma City, OK, Bricktown.
Rode by the Cadillac Ranch and the Texan Restaurant in Amarillo, TX. By there do that and besides a 72oz steak is BIG!!
Did the usual stop in Husband, TX for the “Big Cross”. This time however I decided to go into town for a café. Excellent Choice!
Made it to Bricktown in time for a meal, tried the usual but way to busy. Some place new but not the same.
-
Day Seventeen | Oklahoma, OK – Memphis, TN | 490 miles
Interstate 40 would be the normal disaster and making any time would be difficult. A thought of Eureka Springs, AK was out there but timing would not allow that to occur.
A lunch stop at Freddy’s was in order if for ice cream only.
The evening would end up in Memphis, TN. A baseball game was in-town with a heavy crowd. Beale Street had a street concert with Luke Combs. One final night of good times with the krewe.

Day Eighteen | Memphis, TN – Ashville, NC | 560 miles
Another Interstate 40 traffic day and here I would say so long to the final krewe member.
Nice evening downtown.
-
Day Nineteen | Ashville, NC – Savannah, GA | 350 miles
While I wanted to stay around the area for the morning, I found my way on the road early. I knew I had a good amount of work to address when I got back home. Besides, I will be back in September.

Epilogue
Another journey for the books. Places revisited. New ones found. Strangers turn into friends. Life lived. A jam packed journey filled with adventure. What is not to love.
A special thanks to my road dawgs who made it a special time. To my friends I know along the way, I am sorry that my time schedule did not permit an opportunity to visit. That’s why there is next time.
Also, thanks to the krewe for providing me with their photos to share. While they did not want to be on camera, they shared their photograph eye and I appreciate that.
Finally, the expedition started out in search for Lucky Sevens and ended in Crazy Eights. The Lucky Sevens were for Vegas and the Crazy Eights are represented by, 8,000 + miles, 8th time to the West Coast in 12 years, with 8 + hour days in the saddle!
GREAT TIMES! Can’t wait to do it again!

Another great journey Jock...thanks a bunch for taking us along!
Many locations brought back memories....some of locations that we've rode together. Feels like it's time for another road trip....especially since the kids are back in school and all of the families are off the road and easier traveling.
As always, I look forward to your next journey!

Yes you are right Dick, I am due one and was getting things lined up so we could go this year. Two months ago I had cataract surgery and two weeks later was supposed to have the other eye done. That way I would have this done and I would be ready for this years Maggie Valley trip. Unfortunately, I was allergic to the steroid the doctor gave me  causing my eye pressure to blow up causing me to having to postpone my other eye being done. I’m just now getting vision back in my right eye and I will know next week about having my other eye done hopefully everything will go better this time so still don’t know about Maggie Valley this year :nixweiss: but hopefully next year will be a go.
I sure do miss seeing all you guys but most of all the shenanigans. 🤣

Geez Mike! Praying for a positive outcome. Sorry to read of that position.
In the meantime, we will have some Shenanigans in your honor in the event you are unable to come. In addition consider driving over. I did last year and had just as much fun.
