Title: 2021 West By God Virginia Gathering

As many of you know, many years ago we had a small group of members that would co-ordinate gatherings all across the United States and Canada.  Some of the best times in my life are contributed to my attendance to these gatherings.  While I have not made all of them, I have made my share.  At times, work, time, money, other commitments would stand in the way. 

SHRADER and Miss Susan is one of those members that have given of themselves.  They have hosted Maggie Valley and West Virginia gatherings.  I have been blessed to attend the majority of the Maggie Valley ones but only once on the West Virginia gatherings.  For me, I have an annual meeting usually at this time however this year is virtual and was fortunate to get approval to be off.  So here I come and I am ready for this exciting area.

Thanks Mike, Susan and All of the Others who have given of themselves for others to enjoy.

I invite all those in attendance to contribute their imagines of their journey for this event.  My hope is we will have a compilation of each other’s experience to share of the event and the travels along the way.

Looking forward to seeing all of you in attendance and for those of you who are not….enjoy these experiences.  Perhaps next time.

Spent the night in Asheville and we had a fire alarm go off at ~ 5:20am.  The remaining couple of folks outside enjoying the view of my motorcycle.  HA!

While in Asheville I visited a few locations of interest…

The Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence the Deacon & Martyr is a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church in downtown Asheville. The church was designed and built in 1905 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino along with his fellow architect R. S. Smith and the Roman Catholic community of Asheville.  Pope John Paul II elevated the status of the church to minor basilica in 1993.

The inside of the basilica is adorned with statues of saints, including St. Lawrence, St. Cecilia, St. Rose of Lima, St. Patrick, and St. Peter the Apostle. The Daprato Statue Company made the statues in Italy. The high altar is made from Tennessee marble. Above the high altar in the sanctuary is a Spanish wood carving of the Virgin Mary and John the Apostle mourning at the crucifixion of Christ. Behind the wood carving of the crucifixion and covering the entire wall of the apse are polychrome, terra cotta, ornamental partitions of the Four Evangelists and Archangels St. Raphael and St. Michael.

The basilica is known for its many elaborate stained glass windows, many of which were made in Munich, Germany. On the right wall of the basilica, the windows depict the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Nativity of Christ, the Child Christ Teaching in the Temple, and the Conversion of Saint Paul. On the left wall the windows depict the Wedding at Cana, Christ Healing the Daughter of Jairus, the Calming of the Wind and Waves, the Agony in the Garden, and the Resurrected Christ appearing to St. Mary Magdalene. The two large windows, one on the eastern wall and one on the western wall, represent Christ healing the afflicted and the Transfiguration of Christ. The large window in the organ loft portrays the Resurrection of Christ.

At the corner of Jacob and Lewis streets in Charleston, stands a metaphorical mural. It’s made up of thousands of tiny, colorful squares that come together to depict the complexity and multidimensionality of power.

The mural stretches out to almost the end of the street, and it is almost too much to take in at one time. It takes a couple of minutes of walking to get to the end in order to get the full picture. The changes in color make the viewer want to go along the wall to see the other end, as if the artwork itself possessed some kind of influence to make the observer move.

Cathedral Falls is a beautiful 60+ foot waterfall on Cane Branch.  It cascades down a narrow canyon and lands right beside US Rt 60.

The Mystery Hole attraction was opened in 1973 when original owner Donald Wilson discovered what he claimed was an underground area where the laws of gravity acted more like suggestions. Like many mystery houses of the time that once dotted the American roadways, this odd gravimetric behavior manifested in rooms where people seemed to stand at a distinct slant, balls and even water that seemed to roll uphill, and furniture balanced on impossibly precarious points.

While these illusions were located in a basement area (where he could level the land in the strange ways that created his illusions), above ground he built a zany-looking gift shop that was painted in eye-catching carnival colors and which was decorated by kitschy wonders like a sawed-off Volkswagen Beetle that seemed to be crashing into the structure and a big gorilla statue looming over the front door.

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was a Kirkbride psychiatric hospital that was operated from 1864 until 1994 by the government of the U.S. in the city of Weston. Weston State Hospital got its name in 1913 which was used while patients occupied it, but was changed back to its originally commissioned, unused name, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, after being reopened as a tourist attraction.

The original nine patients when they opened were women.  Men could drop of their wives here and they could not be released unless the husband came back to have them released.  Same holds true for physicians and patients.  No questions asked.

Ran all the juice out of the battery!  But a new stator and regulator put the juice back in!!  Again thanks to all the guys for being my pit crew and getting me home!
