I have 2010 FLHXSE. When starting up cold first thing, no issues. Fires right up. If turned off for about 15 minutes, no re-start issues. However, if after riding for a while and stop for an hour or so, hard starting. Fuel pump primes and motor turns over fine, but doesn't fire up. After a few tries starts up and runs fine. Any ideas what's going on here?

What is the miles on the bike?
Have you tried new spark plugs?
Fuel pressure test or check for codes?
Hot crank senor breakdown maybe.

Following.....I've been dealing with this for two/three years. Rarely an issue, only when stopping for fuel or short stops after getting to temp. Changed starter clutch at stealerships suggestion, but still there. Changed fuel caps, no change.

About 73K miles. Plugs replaced per maintenance schedule. Taking into dealer to change fuel filter and will have checked out at that time.

You didn't say if this issue began not long after your maintenance of changing the plugs It could very well be the plugs.
I've had new plugs that fail when they've gotten hot before. I'd try changing the plugs again before letting the Stealership go on an expensive witchhunt.

You said it's fine on starting up when cold and warm but not when hot. Fuel filter wouldn't distinguish it between it being hot or cold the plugs would.
It's the same as a plug will work fine on normal running but will fail on high acceleration (miss fire motor hesitation etc.)

They may not be your issue but on a two banger motor it only takes one to give grief. For what they're worth my money's on the plug if this started not long after changing them.

Mine did similar, thought it might be battery as it was 13 years old. It was the compensater in the end of the crank.

I had the exact same thing on my 110. It turned out one time to be the compensator, needed to be beefed up to the screaming eagle one. Harley should have just put these in on any 110. I also had a compression release that stopped working, fairly easy to test and diagnose. When you stop after a long ride and try to start it does it sound like crap, lots of noise coming from the primary (embarrassing) as it struggles to kick over? (Yes=Compensator)

My 14 CVO RK does this PIA thing when refueling hot. Live in FL so hot is the norm. So about every 10-15 times after a refuel it goes into a limp mode and the check engine light appears. 70% of the time only requires an ignition switch recycle. But 20% it keeps going into that same mode even after several attempts and differing periods of time between attempts. Otherwise a strong running Stage 2 110.

Sorry....Just realized how old this thread was. I'm old too though!!

I agree with most recommendations so far especially the compensator if it hasn't been changed. Also you would be surprised at how dirty a fuel filter can get at only 25000 miles. I'm not saying this is the issue but it hasn't been changed, change it!

I had the exact issue with my 2010 FLHXSE. Dealer couldn't find any issues. Battery started to show signs of age so I replaced and no more starting issues! Whoda thunk?

The CVO 110 cranks 225lb without compression releases, stock. The ACR exhaust passages get blocked with carbon over time. This can be serviced with the heads on. I am assuming slow cranking. Thr ACRs are very robust parts.

Paul, this is a 2013 Road King? You check for codes?

describe your symptoms in detail please, cranks slow at first, cranks but doesn't fire, kickback

Yes, 13 R/K. Zero symptoms really. Just when at operating temps, and say you stop for a dart or to get gas, you get all ready to go and go to start.....just turns over like it's going to start as normal, just doesn't. Turns over, no sounds that are diff, no stumbling or coughing, nothing, just turns over and doesn't start. Sometimes if you just keep cranking (taking a second before attempts of course) it will just go after a few attempts, sometimes, it starts as normal, but usually it likes a wee rest, then it's good to go. Nothing crazy done to bike, cams, pipe, tune, normal stuff, have changed rocker cover gaskets before, so while in there I changed the breather filters.

Weird I know, sadly I'm used to it

Prolly something very simple such as a electrical connection corroded. If you haven't, try cleaning the throttle body connectors, pins and sockets, inspect the wiring good.

From there you can systematically go thru the electrical connections. Battery and grounds too.

Thanks, I will try anything at this point. I have in the past pulled every fuse in the fuse box and put a little dielectric grease on every connector or fuse in there. Hoping in the near future to add a few cubic inches and a few things. Hopefully at one pint I catch this issue. It won't hold me back, but would be nice to shut it off at train crossings and things.

Once dealt with a bike behaving similarly whose owner had fired the parts cannon at it. Everything except a coil and a crank position sensor. For anything that doesn't throw a code and shuts off or doesn't start when hot my first shot from the parts cannon is a crank sensor. It happened to fix this guy's bike.

Good to know, thank you. Fortunately, I have been hesitant to just fire parts in, only the starter clutch (based on dealers suggestion), other parts were changed out due to wear or failure, and just didn't happen to change anything related to this matter. Once it miles out and I send it off for more HP's I may throw a sensor in for chits and giggles, see if it helps. Also will be going with a fan assisted oil cooler, see if running cooler helps or not.
Weather window is opening, may ride to work tomorrow
