Might be because those "fibre" chains were something that we all really want to forget.  Cost me many, many bucks in my hotrod '57 Chevy....

Hub, I tried to find the thread where someone had described polishing (or doing something) to their Twin Cam's chains.

Talked to the dealer today and they agreed to discount the amount of labor and parts needed to replace the stock shoes from a gear drive installation. Should save me a few bucks. I'm thinking about andrews tw37g cams. These seem close to the 253's and are supposed to be good from 2200 - 5800. I thought about the 31's but I think maybe the 37's will work for my kind of riding.  Any thoughts?

After doing a bit of research, I think I'll go with the 31g. I think this cam will tolerate a bit more compression without pinging. According to Andrews it's basically the 37g with different timing.

Seen lot's of 37's installed on 103's, but no 31's.  Anxious to hear your results.  Is your motor stock at this point?  Good luck and let us know.

RIght now it is stock except for V&H true duals, supertrapp ids mufflers with 15 discs per muffler, a K&N air filter and a race tuner. I will probably have the heads shaved to bring compression up to 9.5-9.8 or maybe go the easier route and use a cometic 030 head gasket.

Mobe,

if your going to shave the heads and get around 9.5 to 9.8 to 1 have you considered the 55g since the clearances are within tolerance?   This will give you the downlow grunt for getting the bagger going and should run good as well with plenty of power all the way around?

I would tell you to hold off if I had more information on the cam that Zippers made, but I can't say that they will release it.   I am leaving it in the pumpkin because it runs really well.

I've been giving this a lot of thought and here's where I'm at right now.  I am going to go to a cometic 030 head gasket which should put me at about 9.25 -9.3 compression ratio. I want a quiet torquey motor. I think that the tw37g might be the way to go as it has only about 26 degrees of overlap and a conservative .510 lift. I've been going back and forth between the 31 the 37 and the 50. The 50 is supposed to work good with 9.25 - 9.5 compression but has 38 degrees of overlap. Our 253's have about 18 degrees of overlap. If I was going to go ahead and shave the heads and up the compression some more the 50 or 55 would look good. For the moment the 37g is looking good. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

GM used that nylon toothed cam gear in Chevy's (and a few others) for a lot years.[highlight]  Replaced a lot of those when I was a kid still working in a gas station and a garage.  They had an average life span of 60-65k miles if I remember right.  Thank god small block Chevies were easy to work on[/highlight]

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Twolane,
You worked in a fillin' station, too?  Some of the best memories of my Life.  Lived in a College Town, Athens, WV.  Loved cleanin' the Windshields, which we used to call "WISHSHIELDS", for all the College Girls, [smiley=gorgeous.gif] that stopped for $2.00 worth of regular!  Is that off topic?  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  Later--HUBBARD

Back in 2000 when everyone was having the same problams we would polish the chains and that made the shoes last a lot longer, but that's why I changed to a gear drive, and just forgot the shoes, I can't even tell that the gears are even there, no noise at all if there mished right
