Title: What do you guys use to clean the black vinyl/whatever it is on lowers?
Post by: Nicky Pass on April 19, 2015, 02:41:21 PM
I bought a 2015 CVO Street Glide and I took it out a few time, but the temps are gonna dip again and rain for a couple of days, so I started putting paint protectant on.  I've got that down to a science, but I'm not sure what to do about the material on the lowers?  I have Adams Polishes VRT and it is a great product that doesn't shine up like Armour All and it has UV protection as well. MVRT stands for Vinyl, Rubber and Trim....I don't want to try it until I get some feed back. If there is anything else that is recommended, please feel fro to let me know.

thanks in advance!

On my '15 RGU, either Protectall or Lemon Pledge. Both have worked well.  I think the Adams would be fine.

The Adam's VRT worked amazingly....not real shiney, it makes it look perfect.  It works awesome on the inside black plastic too.

I've tried WD-40 (sprayed a little on a rag & rubbed it on) and Turtle Wax Ultra Wet Tire Shine. So far I like the Turtle Wax, smells better plus it says "Ultra" so that means it must be made for my bike, lol.

Another thumbs up for the Lemon Pledge.  I carry a small can with me on all trips.  I've used it for years...dang stuff can be used on everything.  Cleans/protects and shines....gotta use the aerosol version.  Pump bottle doesn't work as well.

Lemon Pledge - I have used on car tires in the past but didn't think about it for this.  Where else do you use it?  Does it hold up well in the sun?

Yes.  Seat,  back side of side covers, wiring, etc. inside side covers,  under seat.  Pretty much everything except paint, engine, windshield and chrome.

I learned about Lemon Pledge at the Porsche concourses years ago.  They use it on damn near everything.

The VRT from Adams has a UV protectant....you apply it, then buff it off for a very slight gloss.

Does it make the seat slippery? I am going to have to give this a try.  Thanks for sharing.

Actually Greg, it works great on the paint, too. Shops use it for the floor stock instead of the more expensive stuff they sell (plexus and such)  and that's why the lemon Pledge is my go to cleaner on the road for paint, chrome etc

Not slippery.  I use it on the entire car interior, including the seats. It leaves just the right amount of shine.

Plexus is terrific for plastic but it has nearly tripled in price over the last few years.  I still use it for our plastic windshields, though.

If you need a can of Plexus, I've got one sitting on the shelf in the garage I'll send you.  I'll have to clean off the dust and such from where it's sat so long.... ;D

I use "Goof off" and "turtle wax detailer". Almost any detailer will do. Also bought a 4lb. bag of painters rags. Works great all over bike. :pineapple: :pepper:

The Jeep and Boating community uses 303 Aerospace Protectant on all their plastic parts. I have been using on the lowers and everything plastic or leather and it works great. Not greasy or shiny and lasts for months. It has "Powerful UV Protection"SPF 40", and better yet no silicone that will eventually dry out plastic and vinyl. I get mine on ebay.

I have to admit when I first read your recommendation for Pledge... well lets just say I smiled.  :) BUT I have now used it several times and I really like the stuff! Haird you are the best! The stuff works on everything. Definitely going to take a can with me on all trips. Perfect waterless solution for bugs and all. Thanks for the info!

VRT works wonders on Vinyl and tires it is never oily although Adams now has a new tire treatment that I haven't tried yet. I should try it on my seat, never thought of that.

you may find it hard to believe but peanut butter does a good job !  rub it on then rub it off.  The oil in it leaves a good finish.  It's also good at getting residual polish off the black plastic.
cheap as well ......peanut butter !

I like Aerospace 303.  It works really well on vinyl or leather seats also and has no silicone in it.  Cleans and protects and resists dust well.  Use it on my boat seats and dashboards of the cars also.  It's some high tech quality stuff!

if you go over to the hdforums site and look for user sta-bil and send them a pm with your name and address, they will send you out a sample box containing 2 bottles of cleaner, 2 bottles of 303 protectant, 2 bottles of octane boost, and 2 bottles of fuel stabilizer (and maybe something else, i don't remember).  sure they are small bottles, but they are a good size to carry on the bike on a short road trip (weekender, couple/three overnights, etc).

I just use a no-rinse wash called Optimum No-Rinse. Just a gallon of water and a capful of ONR to wash whole bike. I also, use it to make my own quick detailer by adding it to water in a spray bottle.

303 Aerospace. Great stuff like Doc said. Use on bike and cars. Lasts a long time.

I just did the research on this Optimum No-Rinse.  They make it in both a wash & shine and a wash & wax.  I think I'm going to try this stuff.  Where I live in the Ozarks, my water is 160' down in my well and filtered through natural limestone, so it's very mineral laden and hard.  Consequently it leaves rings and water marks no matter how fast you dry the paint.  I've thought about re-piping my front spigot on the house to come from the softened water supply in the house, but haven't gotten to that point yet.  Plus, I'd like a quality rinse and dry for both our black sports car and my bike as the 3/4 mile gravel road puts out some horrendous dust that seems to stick to everything.
Plus, I can pre-mix this with some filtered water and keep it in a windex bottle for those times I need a little touch-up on painted or chrome surfaces.
This stuff looks like it might do the trick for me, but I won't ever give up my Aerospace 303 in the meantime!

+2

I've used it for years on all my vehicles.  Also use their sealant called Optimum Gloss Coat.  Seems expensive for what you get but one syringe, 10 ml, did a sedan and the Ultra over a year ago and both look and shed water today just like the day I put it on.  I'll be buying more soon to do the truck as the old sealer I was using doesn't compare to the Gloss Coat.

I bet the squirrel tracks are a son-of-a-gun to clean off of the paint, and the tooth marks along the seams get a little unsightly.  :o >:(

Check out Surf City Garage products. Love the stuff and i have tried most of them. Especially like the chrome polish and wax.
