I see folks do it all the time.  I'm no doctor but I wonder if they were able to save that foot.  Just terrible.

I see it every once in awhile but not often.  One of those things.....no second chance.

Kind of like those guys that ride wearing shorts........no problem until you end up with a couple of bees, yellow jackets or wasps up the legs of your shorts.   I guess the stinging insects are better than the road rash.  :nixweiss:

As someone once said so eloquently, you can't fix stupid.  I know every time I get on the soapbox around here and post about proper riding equipment (including real riding boots), or other safety related topics, I get ragged on by some folks.  I don't take it personally, and I even understand that some people will never admit to being less than invincible.  I just feel sorry for the folks who will suffer excessively from incidents like this when it doesn't have to happen, and keep hoping advice from folks like me might make at least a few see the light.

Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous, it seems a shame that so many make it more dangerous than it has to be, either through ignorance or machismo.

Never wore FF's, but did tennis shoes. Had a blowout and melted the bottom of the shoes, I was in my early 20's and have worn boots ever since. Good lesson on the cheap!!

One issue that bothers me about motorcycle insurance is the low medical coverage. It is something like $5,000 on my policy and that is the highest they offer. I have bitched that it is not enough to cover an ingrown toenail. I sure hope that he has other coverage.

No issue on advocating proper riding gear from me Jerry - keep on... If the feet, 'post flip-flop' photographs isn't enough, everyone needs to be reminded constantly.

AND That goes for the BSR as well, you can't believe the crap we see down here worn for "style". Put the GD fancy heel less shoes in the bag or pack and put on rubber soled boots for the ride.

Quoted for Truth! I see BSR's wearing sandals or flip flops, shorts, and tank tops all the time. They look good (well, some of them do) but have zero protection in the event of a mishap. Not on my ride!

Every time I hear (or in this case see) something about flipflops/shorts/etc, I think about the couple I saw a few years ago around the Newport, TN area.  We passed them going the other direction on a two lane road.  He was in shorts, tank top and flip flops.  SHE was in shorts, halter top and bare footed.  While I suppose they thought they looked cool and relaxed on a Sunday afternoon ride, my mind went straight to them wrecking and both their feet, legs, arms hitting the pavement and then pretty much what you see in the first post of this thread.
I feel for the person in the picture but knowing better and actually doing it are two different things....lots of rehab in their future.

Does anyone know of anymore of the circumstances of this mishap.  Note that all the damage to the foot area seems to be only related to the left foot and the right foot looks OK in that pic.

Not knowing exactly what happened,  it wouldn't be a surprise to me if it ended up being related to an (Open Primary Drive).

I don't think that all belt primary drive setups are shielded fully and thus something like this may have occurred where his left flip flop got entangled in the drive and literally skinned him alive.

Kinda reminds me of stories in recent years where kids wearing Crocs got caught up in some esculators and got their feet mangled in the process. :-\
