Thanks for reminding me. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] I got so caught up in taking care of the expenisive mods I had forgotten about this. This may set the record for the most inexpensive modification this site has cost me. Somebody contact Guinness Book. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Spyder, here's a photo of the marker I used.  I think they only have two shades of blue a lighter and a darker.  I used the darker one after trying the lighter one which turned out to be too transparent and too light a shade of blue (kinda "sky blue").  This one is darker than I would've liked, but I was unable to find the gen-u-wine H-D cobalt blue in the Sharpie line, so I went with this one!  ;D

The stock number on the bar code is: 71641 30063

LOL, Dave!  Yeah, I couldn't go to another MV event that you're attending and not have this done!  And yes, it's nice after ordering cams, pipes, and heated seats to do a mod that I don't have to put on my Visa!  [smiley=greedy.gif] [smiley=greedy.gif] [smiley=greedy.gif]

Brian, that looks nice.  I don't think I've saw it on a blue and black before........very nice! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]   How long does it last before it starts to fade? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
Title: Re: My latest mod . . .
Post by: 110tHunDer on September 05, 2006, 04:08:54 PM

Not sure how long it will last since I just did it yesterday.  I did ride it a couple times afterward just to see what heat would do to it, and it seems to be holding up just fine so far.  We'll see what a few more miles and some washings does and report back here.

Looks good, Brian...and you stayed in the lines!!  The teacher would have given you a smiley face  :)  One would need to be relatively sober to do this, I would assume, but perhaps we can experiment with that hypothesis in MV   [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif]

Wonder what color would look good on the BCCS....guess a Crimson color would work...that's my favorite football team's colors anyway.

Terry, I'd think you'd wanna go with whatever color is on your air cleaner and timing covers, which I think is red on your bike.

Looks great, Gary! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Like I'd said originally, this was not my idea and has been discussed a couple times off and on around here.  (The first time I'd seen it done was on Gettinold's bike in October 2004 at the first Maggie Valley.)  So, it's kinda neat to see the interest that this has generated.  But, that's the reason I decided to start a thread on this instead of just doing it and not posting anything.  I think it's a cool little mod that adds a ton of detail, is cheap, and easy to do!  We don't get many of those!!!

I did the Fired00d-style super detail to my bike today.  Using S100 on the engine, including the marked up lettering on the heads, I got a slight bit of lightening on the "e" and the "a" in "Screamin'" on the rear cylinder head.  If I wasn't going to Maggie Valley in 4 weeks, I probably wouldn't even mess with touching it up. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  I've put about 300 miles on the bike this past week and the rest of it looks like when I put it on.  Seems like it will hold up OK based on what I've seen so far.  If not, it's quick and easy to touch up. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I found the part, and they are inexpensive. Now for the dificulty part of the equation....

Chrome Rocker Box Bolt Covers

Matching the styling of our classic chrome headbolt covers, these chrome-plated Rocker Box Bolt Covers add chrome to your Twin Cam engine. [highlight]Easy-to-install, the covers are held in place by spring steel clips.[/highlight] Each engine has a total of twelve rocker box bolts, but not all bolts are visible on all models, so the covers are sold in packages of four.

BTW - I did add them to my wishlist. ;D

What I'm thinking is you can only put these covers on the two bolts furthest back on the rear jug (each side), and two bolts furthest forward on front jug (each side). So I guess you're right I will need two packs. :'( Oh well my dealer is having a big sale this weekend, maybe I can get a deal on them. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Ok, all kidding aside; I'd have never pulled all that apart just to change out those covers.  But when it was all already apart anyway that made it a much simpler decision.  Making it even more simple was that I knew that little project was coming for so long that I scoped out eBay for awhile and got the rocker boxes for half of MSRP, the pushrod tubes for 1/4 and the matching billet lifter blocks for about a 1/3rd.  Speaking of; if you're thinking about the rocker boxes you might as well complete the set  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .

Hey pal, just think about Grover is costing me right now.  What goes around comes around  ;D .  FWIW, these do look really good in there.  If you decide to do it you'll like it.  Even if you don't do the boxes but are considering the tubes and lifter blocks it definitely is the time to do them while it's all apart.

After all, if you do the HawgWired amp thing in the spring like you mentioned we can pull the tank then to route the heavy power lead more carefully.  Wouldn't be absolutely necessary, but it's certainly do-able.  Then change the rocker boxes at the same time.

Man, nine pages on Sharpie pens?  I have to admit, though that when I was walking around the bikes at MV in April of 2005, a few had done this already and it looked so good, I thought it must be some factory CVO-thing for the heads.  Except I couldn't figure out why some were orange, some were red, and most had no color added.  Otis was the first one to tip me off.

Yeah, but what started out as a $1.29 + tax mod. thread has just cost me about $700! [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I have come to the conclusion that it is better not to have any photos of my scooters on here, because then everybody has an opportunity to put blue arrows and chit all over the pics, either to point out what you have or don't have/need, which always costs me money somehow.

Oh, by the way...I have a red Sharpie going home with me today  ;) ;) ;D  I'm not going to be the only one at MV without my heads done... :o :o

Mark, on the 'nana, I think I would go with whatever color (red?) they have in the script in the air cleaner and timing covers.  That way all the lettering matches.  Plus, if the yellow is not quite the right shade, that might look like chit. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

You know, we keep wondering how long the Sharpie detailing will last on the heads, but I'm wondering what takes it off (good) if you wanna change back to the bare look?  :-/ I mean, we know to use lacquer thinner to take off paint, but has anybody experimented with removal of the coloring from a Sharpie?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] spyder

Actually, I was wonderin' the same d@mn thing as I was putting it on.  But I figured it had been a couple years since I'd first seen it on one of these bikes and that if I still liked the way it looked after all that time, I'd like it forever.

As long as it doesn't somehow get impregnated (Twolane should have fun with that one) into the metal, it seems like you should be able to get it off either with some solvent like lacquer thinner, or something abrasive like a Scotch-brite pad.

Since you ask, I experimented with a red sharpie on my SE heads, but since mine are black, the contrast wasn't quite what I wanted and took it off.

Gary, they can be a real b-!-t-c-h to get on, but they just push on.  Try either putting a squirt of WD-40 on them, or a dab of dielectric silicon grease on the metal prongs, then push as straight down as you can.  Getting them started straight is the key.  Sometimes you'll get a little "click" when they seat and other times they'll just kinda slide right on.  As long as they are sitting level, you should be good to go.

Good luck Dood and keep an eye on them, my front two on the right hand side came off twice before I dod the latest set, pryed the tabs a lil tighter with a small screwdriver and dabbed them with rubber cement, rode a hundred miles today and didn't lose them, but what a PITA they are. Of course after last nights postings I realized I am trying a second rate approach and now have to order the fancy azz chrome rocker box covers I saw here, this website is costing me mega greenbacks, I could overlooked the dang rocker box covers but add with the billet tappet covers and pushrod covers and I'm screwed now. Unless I close the deal on the 1960 Harley Scooter I'm workin on, then the SEEG will have to wait for any more attention for a while ;D

They are the SE orange wires. They do have the black boot, but what little of the orange wire that you do see I figured would add/give a little more contrast, maybe take the O/B theme a little farther? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
