2012 street glide. heat under control finally
« on: August 26, 2012, 12:09:44 AM »

After doing several things with not much improvements I was about to give up. Here is what I have done.
cat less headers
PCV with Auto tune
Trimed the vents.
The wife was good at these stages and the bike ran great. But my right leg was getting cooked.
I removed the baffle that attaches to the tank and engine guard. We took a ride, 235 miles. I could not believe it solved everything.
Some folks say it is a baffle for the road glide but my street glide came with it.
I mean it is great. not heat. Even while at lights I'm good now. Got caught with long several lights in Decatur and it was ok. Warm mind you. Rode between 70-75 mph and got 42.7 mpg.
I am a happy camper now

I put the chrome baffle by the triple tree.  Is that what you mean?

I think he's talking about the wind deflector mounted to the "crash" bar that's supposed to reduce buffeting by filling in the vacuum behind the windshield.  Supposedly it's just a RG thing, but somehow it was installed on his SG as well.

Ok. I've seen those.  They clip onto the crash bar and hook by the gas tank.   I've seen them on road glides.  How did those end up on a sg?  I guess they don't work.  I took my lowers off.  That was a big help for me.  The the exhaust and a tune.   I really don't have issues with the heat anymore. The biggest help was losing the lowers.   Stuart

Here are a two pictures of what they are talking about.  They really do a great job of keeping the air from around the tank from going right up your nose.  Much less buffeting and it diverts the air coming around the 6 gal. tank, which is very annoying.  They are made for a Road Glide, but with a little trimming they work great on a batwing.

They just clip in place, takes 30 seconds.

Yup.  That's what I was thinking. I have the chrome air baffle.  It works well.   I do notice that I have less buffeting without the lowers.  I also added the fairing deflectors.  They also help.   I'm starting to look like an ultra tho.   It's worth it.   The buffeting is no fun.   Glad those deflectors work for you. Did they come on or with your bike when you got it?

They did not come with the bike.  Actually, I read about them on one of the many threads about buffeting.  The air right up my nose was driving me crazy, so I consider this a pretty cheap cure for the problem.  I think they were 34.95 from a Harley dealership in Tulsa (no discounts).  The service manager was curious to see if they would work, so they trimmed them for me for nothing.  It looks and feels to me that they will not add to a heating problem, since they are only diverting the air that's coming around the tank and ending up right in your face.  It feels like the air coming around the tank is now hitting me in the arm pits instead of in the face.

yes that is it. It came on my 2012 Street glide. It was on it when I got the bike.
My bike had 1 mile on it when I got it. that is why I said it was for a road glide.
They work great for buffeting but really cuts back on air to the engine.
It was day light to dark difference.
I would not have thought it would help that much because of the location.

I am curious, what helmet do you use? Because when I use a 3/4 helmet with a face shield the wind drives my nose crazy.
It does not do that with my 1/2 helmet or if I take off the face shield on the 3/4.

I didn't lose them really.  They are in my closet.  ;).  Really the Bike is so much cooler without them.  Seems like that heat can't escape otherwise.  :nixweiss:

I've got a half helmet (Harley).  Use to do it real bad, the deflectors cured the problem.

I am still using my lowers, the other things that I have done has cured my heat problem. Since mine did come with the road glide baffle I had to remove it which is basically saying a factory street glide. I am using the adjustable wind deflectors on the fairing.
So I still have my tunes.

All this post was about is how i got my 2012 CVO street glide cool and comfortably usable.
i was having a hard time getting it like my 07 Ultra was. Well it is now. Cooler than my goldwing to.I am really a happy camper.

I hope you find yours.
Oh, I did remove the lower fairing to check it out but I have it cooler now that with them removed but I did have have the Road Glide baffle on.

I forgot. I only wear half helmets with a internal flip up visor.

just a thought
