Anyone added Saddlebag guards to your CVO SG?
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:07:43 PM »

I really love the clean look of the Street Glide and one of the things that add to it is the saddlebag supports with no guards in front of the bags.  Before I got my SESG, I was planning to take the Ride Like a Pro training on my EG.  It had the bag guards and I was planning to wrap them for the course.  Now, I traded for the SESG.  While I prefer the look, I am paranoid about not having saddlebag guards.

Over the years, I have had a combination of crash guards and saddlebag guards save my bags on at least 2 occasions.  Have any of you gone back to the saddlebag supports with guards?  Your thoughts would be appreciated.  Just trying to temper my concern a little I guess.  I

Since you have a '10, do you have a pic you could post?  I have been searching and reading some of the threads

A member of this forum, Mark, (Ironhorse on this forum) is the instructor for Ride Like A Pro West Coast.  He has everybody remove their saddle bags.

While my wife's 09 Street Glide wasn't a CVO, she did have the rear crash bar (not the wrap around ultra classic style) CVO mufflers, streatched saddle bags, fender and LED tailights and she dropped her bike at one point with very, very minamal damage....mostly to the highway pegs (which we set very low on her crash bar).

Removed my full SB guards and never looked back. Like the look better. A mechanic dropped my bike and actually only scuffed the edge of the lower on the left side.

There have been a couple of threads on this topic before, including at least one with all the part numbers you would need to add the saddlebag guards.

Mine is an '11 but the look would be about the same.

I know they do help.  I don't have them on my bike tho.  I like the look without them better.  :nixweiss:

I added them so I could mount the leather bottle holder......the added protection don't hurt either.......

That's the same reason I thought about adding them.  I like the black on the blacked out bikes, but I'm not too crazy about the chrome and my bike would require chrome.  So, currently doing without.

I found the thread with the part numbers, thanks.  Like mjb765 said, I like the black on the blacked out bikes but just not as happy with how the chrome ones look on the SG.  On my EG, I never thought twice about having them.  I appreciate the feedback and information.  Think I may just leave as is.  I just had my old tourpak painted to match and the top of one bag redone where the PO scratched it. I bought the bike to ride so I will just ride it and see what comes.

That's certainly the easiest and least expensive option! I don't think the chrome ones look good on an SESG anyway... too much of the Ultra look.

If you lay the bike over while moving at anything over a few MPH, those guards won't protect all that much of the bags... even a small amount of saddlebag damage means a rather costly repair (if its even possible) - or more likely replacement.

I would just ride it and enjoy it like it is!

Somewhere I saw a set that were powder coated to match the bike.....pretty sure it was this forum.
