Title: Zumo 550 or Zumo 660 Which do you prefer?
Post by: Devil Dog on June 03, 2010, 07:10:47 PM
I currently have a Streetpilot 2720 that I use in my truck or on my 05 Ultra, but I'm thinking of getting an additional unit for my SE Ultra. After seeing all the pictures of the new fairing/dashpad mount, I'm thinking 550 or 660. I read the descriptions on Garmins site, what I want to know is which one does everybody prefer and why?

Thanks in advance
Lou

665(same as the 660) but with XM weather and traffic. The 550 has 2GB of memory half that of the 660. Users are having a real problem making room for the new maps. Check out the Zumo forum loads of info ...

Good suggestion is check out the Zumo forums.

I had a 550 for 2 1/2 years & sold it when the new bike came with a 660 dash mounted.

After a few weeks using the 660 there is no question - for me - that the 660 is a better unit.  It's quicker calculating routes, is a little more user friendly, and it has some very handy features (like on screen elevation or other onscreen options not available on the 550 if you choose that mode) that give it an edge over the 550.

Screen size is another plus.

Price points for the 550 are about $550 to 700 & for the 660 about $550-800, so both are roughly in a similar price range.  Had no trouble selling my used 550 - 3 friends tried to buy it as soon as I said it was for sale.

660 or 665

I have the 550 and the 660.  660 is better.  Hands down.

What $100 rebate? I was going to buy the 660 thru American Express using my points, but now I find that they only sell the 550 or 665. So here is a new question, "What does everyone think about the 665?"

What $100 rebate?

Lou

try this

http://www.gpscentral.ca/rebates/zumo_rebate.pdf

I think the 665 is a 660 with traffic and XM, and a lot bigger price tag.  I am not as in tune with these models as others so hopefully others will chime in.

Good Luck!

You'll love the 665 it shows live radar and traffic for like 7 bucks a month (with XM) and you can buy the subcrription in 3 month block.  The rebate is on any Zumo series from an authorized dealer

The 665 comes with the Garmin GXM 40  XM receiver / antenna combo (a $250.00 item that you have to buy separately with the 550 ) so with the current $100.00 rebate, it actually is close in price. Real pleased with my 550, but the 665 is screaming "Buy Me" .

So the 665 shows actual radar on the map screen? Like this:

Looks like it does.

 Also, what does this mean:

Unlike the zumo 660, the unit is not MSN Direct compatible.

However the service will be discontinued in 1/1/2012

Gary,

What's the point of the MSN? If the 665 gives you weather and traffic without it?

Also, anyone with a 665 have any trouble with the unit shutting off after a couple hours of continued use? Some reviews show this. One even said they had to remove the battery to get it to restart.

The 660 does not have XM capabilities and the 665 does... See comparison here (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=135&compareProduct=65203&compareProduct=15000).

Rob, I've got the GPSMAP 478 with an external XM antenna. I LOVE it! It superimposes NEXRAD weather onto the map so you can see if there is rain &/or a storm coming in your direction of travel. It comes at a cost of about $30 / month. If I was going to upgrade to a touch screen model, the 665 would be the one I would get. The only answer I have not been able to have answered is whether or not the base map has marine charts pre-installed, which I use.

AJ,
The 665 doesn't come with the marine charts pre-installed, but according to the website you can get the Blue Chart pre-programed data card and various lake and water maps.  Don't know if that's the type of maps you need though.  :nixweiss:

I saw that thing in action at Copperhead! Been wanting one ever since. I may have to pull the trigger on one of these. Looks lie the ones offering the $100 rebate are selling at MSRP $999.00. Anyone found much better and have a reputable place ou have purchased from?

Try here - PCNation (http://www.pcnation.com/web/filtersearch.asp?searchtype=&url=GPS+Equipment&searchtext=Zumo)....

Zumo 550 - $650.00
Zumo 660 - $630.85
Zumo 665 - $852.82

I got my 550 from them a few years back and they were easy to deal with and shipping was free/fast.

Which one do I prefer?

It's the one I have, a 550.

I have the lifetime updates tied to the 550.

My 550 failed about a month ago and I sent it back to Garmin along with $150.00 and they sent me another.

Garmin changed the lifetime updates to the new serial number so I'm back in business.

Would I like to have a 665, sure but soon I'm sure I'd like to have the new 765 or later the 865.

It never ends, so my 550 is it for me.

Well also, d00d keeps telling me the 550 is smarter than me and until I catch up it's all I need.

He may be onto something.  :nixweiss:

I like the weather/radar on the 665. On my home yesterday afternoon I heard a loud ping and there was a "Thunderstorms in the area" alert on my screen! Nothing wrong with the 550 either if you don't care about the weather/traffic thing.

You're not alone it's smarter then me too. ;)

Currently I too am satisfied with my 550, however if I were in the market for a GPS now I would probably buy a 665. The reason for that is one I've followed in the past when buying electronics.... always buy the model w/the most features that I can afford. Doing that will carry you farther down the evolution road of electronics. Chip mentioned in his post about "765/865" and you can bet your last dollar the units coming after the 665 are on the testing bench as we speak. Taking that into consideration if you get the unit w/the most features now then it will (hopefully) carry you down that evolution road longer. When you start out not getting all the features that are available at the time of purchase you are starting behind from the start.

I decided on the 665 because of the additional features.  I liked my 550 , but this one is even better.  Mounts to the new dash board mount, and looks great.  No I have to figure how to add a microphone to the thing so my blue tooth phone works.

Nice install Rob. You'll have to let us know how you like having the unit mounted on the tank like that. I've heard some complain (no one on THIS site ever complains  :P) that having it mounted there takes your eyes off the road. I didn't really think so myself but give us the ride report.

AJ,

Thats where my 550 was and I abosolutely love it there. I guess when those who complain look at their GPS mounted on the handlebar, they keep one eye on the road and one on the GPS. You see, my eyes only work independently in a vertical manner (up and down). When I mounted it on the handlebar that calls for more of a horizontal independent movement of my floating eye (side to side) which I can't seem to pull off. So for me the tank mount works perfectly......... :P  :huepfenlol2:

Seriously though, I can glance down at it without moving my head and still see the road peripherally and I love the clean look with no wires running down the bars (although one could run the wires through the bars I would assume).

Only challenge I have seen is with polarized sunglasses. I read on here about it and it's the same for me. Makes the screen harder (darker) to see. I don't like polarized anyway so its a good excuse to get another new pair of sunglasses!

If I was without a GPS, I would get the latest/greatest Zumo. But I have a 550 that I have had for 2.5 years and it does everything I need. I have had it mounted on 2 bikes (soon to be 3 - my new to me SERG) and I use it in my Roush Mustang on occasion. I do need to update the map software (need to figure what I need to do and if there is a cost). I am not going to dump the 550 for a newer model.
