Title: Happy dance - new SG CVO is home - initial review
Post by: tlr on October 06, 2014, 10:25:41 AM
Hello all,

I took the maiden voyage home from NJ with my spankin new SG CVO in UltraViolet Blue.  It was about 290 miles home so I thought I would do a brief write-up for an initial review.  As a reference point I am coming off of a 2014 SGS and had a 2012 SG CVO, so I am familiar with the 103 and 110 engines.

First of all the color is great, to me of course.  It is a deep metallic violet blue.  The sparkle has some blue, green and purple in it. The Blue itself has some black as well, which comes out in the shade.  The orange looks frenched in, 3D affect. Striking for sure. HD did a great job in the quality and design on the paint.

First impression when I sat on it is that I was sitting lower.  Of course that is the seat as the frame remains the same.  The bars felt different to me as well, but that could be the seat too.  On the ride home after about 50 miles, my butt started hurting and continued for full ride.  So off the seat comes and on with the Corbin Solo.

For the first 50 miles I took back roads and kept her below 2500 rpm and varied the speed.  As I had a long ride home and it is my anniversary I had to hit the super slab pretty quickly.  For entire trip home I kept the rpm’s at 3000 or below, but did get to 4k every now and then.  I didn’t really worry about my speed.  Most of the ride was 60-80, although I had a brief stint quite higher.  She tracked perfectly.

The engine is really awesome.  I really liked the 103 in the SGS, but the 110 is just very different. Power is on tap regardless of gear.  Even in 6th, just twist and she goes.  In the 103, it was different at the top end and found myself downshifting more.  Torque off the line is also great.

Suspension – I have had both Ohlin’s and JRI’s, both from Howard of Motorcycle Metal.  I would say that the HD shocks are not bad, certainly much better than they were pre-2012. For the most part I liked them  Where they start to fall short is when you start hitting the bumps.  The shocks do a reasonable job at the small bumps, but when you hit the biggies, they just can’t absorb as much as need be.

Radio/Sirrius – The speakers are a nice step forward from the ones on the 14 SGS.  The added amp adds some nice volume and I definitely could hear it at 70mph. The quality of the sound is good, not great. I would describe it as pretty loud but you don’t get the vividness that you would get from other speakers such as the Focal’s that I had on my 14 SGS. At some point I will call Pete from Soundz and get his thoughts.  Sirius was great.  I only had the preview channel, but the reception and quality of the sound was great.  Reception was on par, if not a little better than my cage.

Wind and shield – when I had my 14 SGS I put a 9” Freedom shield on before I took my first ride. I opened and closed the vent with no real discernible difference noted.  The 15 CVO comes with a shield that is about 4-5”. For the most part it did a pretty good job. The closing of the vent made a huge difference.  When open the air was at the top of my helmet which was fine, closed the air dropped a couple of inches and started shaking my glasses.  Huge difference.

Quality – there are a couple of paint issues from the factory.    On the lower there is a very small place where it was not painted properly (silver showing where there should be orange and a small blemish on the inner fairing.  My dealer was great and is going to take care of both issues.  He told me of the issue before I got there and gave me the option of fixing it or picking it up and fixing it up here in Boston.  This has been reported before regarding the NAV screen and the fact that once you go thru tunnel and the screen darkens, that it does not go back to bright.
The other issue that happened on the ride home was I noticed some sort of liquid coming down in the 2 large gauges.  Started at the top and slowly ran dnw on the inside of the glass. From the flow it looked more like an oil than water. Does anyone know if once the gauges are out can you get to the inside of the glass to clean?  Is it easy to even get to the gauges (for me, not dealer).

I would also add that my experience with the dealer (Ocean County, NJ) was about as perfect as I would want. I don’t hold them accountable for the quality issues from the Moco, but they stood behind everything and I didn’t even have to ask.  I would highly recommend them.

I will post some pics soon via Tapatalk.   :worthless:

GREAT BIKE AND COLOR SELECTION!!   I struggled with the same issues regarding color selection. In the absence of actually seeing each of the four options in person, I think that the blue/orange is the best as you did.

I picked mine up Saturday as well.

I was a previous owner of a 2010 CVO Street Glide and a 2012 CVO Street Glide so comparisions are fairly easy.

At this point in time, 140 miles later, I have only two questions for you;

1.  Did/does the 2015 CVO Street Glide come with a tool kit as the other years did?
2.  Is your transmission noisy?  The dogs clunk loudly with every gear change and it seems to whine like a New York Jewish Princess who wants to go to Miami.

The fix of course will be draining out the Syn-3 and pouring in some new tranny fluid--HD's Formula+ to start.   I want to continue breaking the tranny in some more before I change it so most all of the metal grit is drained out with the dirty Syn-3.

FWIW: I agree the overall quality of this bike is greatly improved over prior year CVO's.

Regards

Jerry

Thanks for the write up and congrats to both of you on your new purchase.

TLR - How do you like the sound / performance of the V&H exhaust system?  By chance did you purchase an extended warranty? If so and you don't mind I was curious as to the going rate for the coverage.

Thanks and enjoy!

Congrats on your new ride as well.
1. Yes there is a tool kit. It is the one in the black velcro'd case. There was also a gold key.
2.  Not much of a while. Little in 1st gear, but that's it. I will put Red Line in all 3 holes at 1k

Sound on the Hi Outputs are great. Low deep rumble. Little loud when you crack it.
I did get the extended warranty. Always do, just in case. The 7year is about $2400. I did get it for a little less.

Thanks Ted.

I have a deposit down on a SG, probably wont see it until next year? Typically I pick up the warranty as well, trying to gauge prices for when it comes to sign the papperwork, thanks!

1.  TOOLS--Where exactly is the velcro case located?

I noticed a snapped case type thing in the rear of the left bag. I unsnapped it and Found the radio  amplifier.

2. I agree with your Red Line decision IF the HD Formula + doesn't work.

3. I have 4" Reinharts on the way.

Thanks

Jerry

Tool case was loose laying in one of the bags.
Good luck with the RH's. Also a good choice. My friend has those and they sound great too.

Did they do the complete exhaust?
Do any tune?

When you say a little loud - set off car alarm loud?

complete exhaust.  Power Duals for the header and the Carbon Tip Hi Outputs. They are deep and somewhat loud, although that's subjective. They are not obnoxious. I have had them on 3 different bikes so I do like them a lot. They are comparable in loudness to the 4" Rineharts that I have heard. I like these better.  Louder than the Monster Rounds that are also V&H.
For a tune, I went with Power Vision from Fuel Moto.  Also had that on my last 2 bikes and was very pleased with the results.

1 purdy scooter, Ted.  Sorry about the "niggly" things but those will be fixed.  Any idea on the fluid you saw on the guages?  Interesting that......

Got to be the bestest color combo in quite a while (my opinion).  Can't wait to see one in the flesh.

Thanks for the ride home report.....

interesting on the gauges as it has seemingly cleared up.  I really didn't think that it would.  I looked at it last night in the garage with a light and I couldn't see anything.  :nixweiss: I will post a pic for you to see.
It is a great color and I am very happy with it. Numerous folks in cars/trucks gave me some :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I found he tool kit. It's much smaller and has less tools than prior years.  I was looking for a kit that had the axle wrenches and channel locks in it too. Cost cutting I guess.

I will keep an eye on my guages to see if they start leaking oil too and let you know.

Thanks again.

Jerry

its on the inside of the glass.  it was dripping down during my ride home. it looked more like oil than water to me at the time. Now it seems to have dried up without any residue or marks. I need to take out in the light to make sure.

Congrats on the new ride.
I have had my blue/orange for a couple of weeks and I'm loving the new fairing. I installed the V&H power duals with high output carbons also, I went with the super tuner and I am really impressed with the difference it made. Throttle response really increased after I loaded the new map. I used the super tuner and V&H power duals with high ouputs on my 2011 flhxse2 also and I was happy with the results.
(of course it had quite a bit of motor work to go along with it)

I have exactly the same thing on my standard flhx . You can only see it in certain light , especially if the sun is behind you . Sometimes it's there , sometimes it's not ?
It looks like condensation running down the inside , but I think it's actually some imperfection in the clear glass.
So it's not just your bike .

Congrats on your new SESG! It's brautiful! Nice thorough write up. The 110 does rev nicely, huh?

Not surprised that the MoCo still hasn't figured out how to make a decent seat for the SESGs. I went Corbin, too... plus a Mustang Super Touring Wide Vintage for two-up riding.

There is only one tranny lube for me... Red Line Shockproof... the pink stuff. And Red Line, Mobil 1, or AMSOil in the engine. Formula+ is fine in the primary, but I run a mix of that and Mobil 1  Syn ATF in there.

When you download the SERT software update it is a PRE-loaded map. I have some minor de-cel pop at 1800 but i will adjust the enleanment when i get some time away from work. I have attached a photo with the description. Hope this helps.

Corbin is on. I have the solo and the pillion. I am going to send the seat back to them and have them take out some of the padding taken out.

I too use Red Line. Use it in all 3 holes. I know there are other choices but the Red stuff has treated me well.

I have been traveling a bunch so still only have 350 mi on her. Taking her to work on Friday which is 100 mi round trip. Gonna open her up a bit more

Yea tl, she really looks dirty..... ;D

Have to say, you have a VERY nice home for the scooter in the background.  Nice garage, brother.   :2vrolijk_21:

Still the best color I have yet to see in person.  I'm headed to Houston the first of November for work (gonna ride down) so hopefully I'll have some time after work hours to get around to the local dealers and maybe see this beautiful color in person.

It is a 9" Freedom Shield. I am 5'9" w a 31" inseam. No buffeting at all. Had her up to 90mph today on way home from work. Love love love it. No wind that is dirty at all. I have not installed any wind deflectors either. Just awesome. Have also had Clearview shield on old SG. Also no issue.
