New handlebars for a 2015 RGU CVO.
« on: December 11, 2014, 11:55:59 AM »

Has anyone heard anything about Harley coming out with a ;D 2nd option this Spring? My new 2015 is due in February. I'm 6'6" and stock bars seem close for me. ;D

You could always just remove the pin and move them forward like most of us are..  The bars themselves seem very comfortable.  Just position them correctly.

I'd second FLH91's suggestion.  I thought the stock bars look very nice.  But if you want to spend money, there are plenty of custom bar makers you can consult. Just make sure they know it's going on a 2015.  Custom bars will run from  $350 and up.  Install is a lot more unless you do it.  I did mine on my '09 recently and am happy.

I had the dealer pull the pin, and rotate mine up a lot.  This is much better, but I after 5K miles was still missing my Apes.  So I have Yaffee OEM Monkey Bars 14" on order.  They are on back order until Feb.

I love them, had them on my 12 SERG and have them on my current 13 SERK

I'm a mere 6' and the stock position was horrible, obviously they are marketing to the vertically challenged. Removed pin and moved the bars forward and it was much better. So far so good but I have barely any miles on it yet so time will tell. You could at least try it and if you don't like it then buy some you like more.

One of the complaints about prior iterations of the RG was the handlebar position - it was too far of a reach for the average male, which in the U.S. is just over 5'9.  When I sit on a '15 RG, the bars seem perfect, and I'm 5'9.  I guess you've got to please the greatest number.

I have been told more than once that Harley designs its stock bike to fit a 5'8" person, be it bars or windshields,  Then they have aftermarket for the people taller or shorter.  Pretty much true on my 13 CVO King windshield.

My wife hated the older road glides due to seat, and bar reach.  She loves the 15 and has one.

I can't quite understand why after all these years Yaffe can't get his $hit together enough to match up on his "supply and demand" so folks don't always have to wait month's for his bars?

Last time I went through this process it let me to:  www.vindikta.com      And as a reward for a little extra homework I found several things that Yaffe was lacking such as: great customer service, access to speak directly to Joe the owner, options to have my bars custom built to my specs, quick turn time less then 2 weeks had them in hand, 1.5" vs 1.25" diameter which looks better IMO and is quite a bit easier to run wires through, availability of matching engine guards and crash bars, built to accept heated grips, price was similar but I felt overall fit & finish was better.

May be worth a look for those who need a quicker turn time from order to installation or those who want to make a few minor changes.

Here's set of Vindikta bars that maybe a little tall for some but purely a thing of beauty and can be made to your preferred height specs.

I'm 6'2" and am pleasantly surprised that the stock bars fit me well and are comfortable. 350 miles only at this point, but I like them.

Moved mine up some and it helped.  However I do not like the wrist angle at all on a 500 plus mile day.  So, thats why I went 14 monkey bars.  Had them on my 12 SERG and still have them on my 13 SERK.  Two more months and they should be on the 15 SERGU.

Have only been able to log 100 miles at a stretch. I'll keep in mind what you said about the wrist angle. I'm happy now and don't really want to swap bars. Time will tell.

For you that have pulled the pin, is this something that can be done at home? Also, are there pins to rotate the clutch and brake nadir assemblies?

opps. no pins on the CVO controls. but there are alignment dots on the bottom side of the bars. You are not supposed to exceed the limits of the dots. I have went past about an 1/8" on mine and check the wire clearance going thru bars plenty of room. But you may want to check to insure you are not pinching wires.

Rob,

The pin is an easy pull.  And as stated no pins for the hand controls, just alignment dots.

Plenty for room for the cables with out pinching them.

The 15 non CVO Road glides have pins for the handle bar controls in addition to the one at the handlebar clamp.

Thanks WJS!

Thanks Dave. I thought I heard or read somewhere there were pins in both. Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm assuming if I pull the pin, I can put it back if I want the original configuration?

Yes you can Rob, I still have mine in case I want to go back to original although that is highly unlikely as I hated the original position. It's pretty straight forward.

Well, I have had it waiting on Yaffe Monkey Bars.  Was Told middle of February originally, then end of February, then end of March, and yesterday was told End of April.  At that point said never mind.

Love the Yaffe OEM monkey bars 14", had them on two bikes, still have them on my 13 King.  They just lost another customer.

Ordering Factory 47's in 14 for the 15 Road Glide.  Was told 10 to 15 business days......

Very nice, looks good.  That is cool you could modify the older bars to make them work.

I have waited for Yaffee bars each time.  But the last two times they said 6 weeks and I had them in 8.  So I was fine when they told me 6 weeks 8 max.  Its about 14 weeks now, and Yaffee can kiss my......

They were the first to claim to have bars for the 15 RG, but they still haven't delivered, every one else has been delivering.  Hope I like the Factory 47's which use to be Burly Bars

Those look great! Any more pics of the bars from other angles?
I've installed Yaffe bars on batwings, and they were a real pain.  I bet the extra corner on the Road Glide version would be even worse!
Most Installers tell me they won't work with heated grips. How was your experience?

Good Morning, heated grips work fine, have had no issues at all sharp angles were better Yaffee has instaled radius half tubes in the shapr points made pulling wires much easier. Here are a few pics also fabricated new bracket for plate relocate that doesnt cover my CVO Emblem.

After doing some miles with my bars forward I am not a fan of the wrist angle and would prefer a slightly shorter height as it is not comfortable over longer distances. Manouvreing at slow speeds in car parks etc is made interesting by my jacket sleeves catching the ends of the bars. I don't want taller bars as my days of apes are way behind me.

Have found some adjustable ones with a couple of vendors but they are ridiculously priced for a once off adjustment and have long wait times. Klock werks have an ergo bar with a better wrist angle and a more standard height for batwing rushmores but not the roadglides just yet. Hopefully they will produce some soon.

If anyone knows of someone who is making something that fits the 15 SERGO with less wrist angle and an inch or two lower than stock I would love to hear about it.

Cheers Tom

I picked up my CVORG last weekend and didn't like where the bars were either. so when we got home took dash off and pulled the pin out and moved the bars to where they need to be, now I can see out of my mirrors and feels a lot better as well.

How did you get the dash off? I took the screws out of the side of the gauges, but I'm stumped at the steering lock switch. Does the switch comes out like the non-cvo models, or does that u-shaped bezel come off somehow?

The Chrome u-shaped bezel under the fork lock, slides back and up, or up and back.  Do not remember which.  No tools needed to remove it.  Then the dash around the gages is easy to get off.

Thanks Dave, I got it figured out. The pin came out super easy and I have the bars adjusted just a tad over parallel with the forks. In that position I think they're perfect! I got the Fullsac head pipe on last night, and will get the baffles completed today. Once the exhaust is done, and the new map loaded with the Mastertune, this baby will be ready to ride!!!!!!

You are welcome.  My bars are set parallel with the forks, but I still am not wild about the wrist angle, height is pretty good.

Next week my new 14" Factory 47 bars will be on.  Hope I like them as well as the 14" Monkey Bars I have used on the last three bikes.

I did the fullsac head pipe, and baffles with 65 miles on the bike, and the TTS master tune with map.

I did the 1.75" baffles and used Fullsac's map. I got it all completed last night and all appears to be good! Bike ran great, sounded great, throaty but not loud. Only thing that puzzled me was the left side radiator fan stayed on about 30 seconds after shut down. It did not do that prior to re-mapping. Is that a normal function of the Mastertune map?

I ordered these about 4 months back and had my dealer in Santa Fe install them. I am very happy with them. Very comfortable wrist angle for me. I got the 12" in chrome. One small glitch, apparently these a built for the FLTR and FLTR Special. My CVO was a bit different around the grips and so i had to settle for black covers to hide the pin holes .. or some such silliness according to my dealer. The covers don't come in chrome. It actually turned out looking quite good.

http://shop.spookyfast.com/collections/handlebars/products/spooky-fast-2015-roadglide-handlebars

And it must be an easy install because they only charged me 6hrs of shop time.

Well after months, as in 5 of being told next month by Paul Yaffy on the 14" Monkey bars, which were on my 12 SERG, and are on my 13 SERK and I love I changed  and ordered the Factory 47.  We also clearly specified when the bars were ordered, no holes for the handle bar control pins as it was for a CVO.  First set came in with the holes.  Sent them back and they made it right, and sent what was ordered.

The dealer has them installed now.  I'm told they look real good, also changed to Arlen Ness mirrors.  I pick the bike back up Wednesday, I can't wait.

Cheers Tom

Found an option at BR Custom Bars. They have a range for the 2015 road glides at:

http://www.brcustomcycles.com/2015_ROAD_GLIDE.php

Stock SERGU15 bars have 11" rise, 10&1/2" pullback a 10&1/2" width at the risers and are very much like the handles on a wheelbarrow I used to own in that they seem to come straight back at you.

I have ordered a set of 2015 Road Glide New Wave bars with 9" rise and 8" pullback to put my hands below shoulder height and address the awful stock wrist angle. This will suit my longer arms and allow blood to my hands on longer rides. 8 week wait time, they'll build them by hand and have them chromed. They work with internal wiring, heated handgrips and the 2015 hand control set up. thanks to this thread they will not have handgrip locating holes in them.

I'll post picks and a review when I get them.

Cheers Tom

Ok, my new Factory 47 bars are on.  They have a better wrist angle than stock, are wider than stock and taller than stock.  Mine are the 14" bars.  One thing to be sure of when ordering them as they are for the 15 Road Glide, is no pin holes in at the bar ends for the regular road glide hand controls.

When mine were ordered we specified no holes for locating hand controls, well they came with them and we had to send them back.

These are the 14" Factory 47.

I have had Paul Yaffe 14"  OEM Monkey bars on my last two bikes, still on my 13 SERK.  I wanted them for this bike, but after 7 months of waiting and bull crap one more month I gave up even though I love those bars.

Some comparison between the Yaffe 14" bars and the Factory 47 14" bars.

Yaffe are 14" bars are 15 1/2 inches tall, and are 37" wide from grip tip to grip tip.  Bars are 1 1/4 inches diameter.

Factory 47 14" bars are 13 1/2 inches tall, and are 39" wide from grip tip to grip tip.  Bars are 1 1/2 inches diameter.

Chrome is better and finish is better or the Factory 47 bars.  Customer service is also better.

Had I known that the Factory 47 were a little short and the Yaffe OEM Monkey bars ran tall I would have ordered 16" in the factory 47 as I would have liked them a little taller.  However initial impression after 100 miles is I like them.  I know I like the height a lot better than stock, and it will take a 500 mile day to confirm that I like the wrist angle better.  Sure feels like it, but factory bars did not bother me until over 200 miles in a day.

One really nice thing about the Factory 47 Bars is you can use stock wiring and stock clutch and brake lines.  That save a good deal of money, and time.  Yaffe requires all new hydraulic lines and wiring.

Factory 47 is the manufacture or vendor, like Paul Yaffe for example.

Factory 47 use to be Burly Bars I believe.

Just did a trip out west, 6881 miles in 15 days.  One 855 mile day, with a 700 mile day the next day on the way home.

Love the bars, very comfortable for long days.  Very good bike control in the High winds in WY, and good control in the mountains.

I now think I like them better than the 14 Yaffee Monkey bars I ran on my last road glide and still have on my King.

Thanks Dave - going to take a closer look at them. I miss the 578's I had on the 13' flhtcuse8... the hand position on the fltruse, even rolled up, puts my hands to sleep at times.

Read the tips one here are the Road Glide forum about removing the pin (quite simple), moved the bars up slightly forward of in line with the forks and wow I love it. I don't think I'll be buying apes like I originally intended as this made the riding positing just about perfect for me. Thank you to everyone for the tips!

That was my issue even with the stock one rolled forward, just was never comfortable with the wrist angle.  Hands would fall asleep often.  Wrist angle on these new bars is great.  Even on 12 hour days my hands only fell asleep a couple times.  They would fall asleep several times in a 5 hour ride with the stock bars.

Did you pull the pin and roll them forward Dave, or just go to the stop limits? I haven't had a chance to ride for any length of time yet so I'm curious.

Pulled the pin the day I took delivery of the bike.  I was one of the first to do so.  Actually did it at dealer before I rode home on bike.

Gotcha, thanks. I should have went back a read the whole thread but I've read so many of them in the last couple weeks I lose track. We'll see, I think we're riding to Vegas next weekend so that should make it pretty clear.

I was thinking about this thread today. Been riding 11 hour days the last three days with my pin pulled and bars rolled forward. Purposely didn't set cruise most of the day today with zero hand sleeping issues (I have had them in the past with other setups just for comparison). Didn't you change seats? If so, wouldn't that change things a little?

Rode today for three or four hours up Hwy 2 and no issues at all with my new bar position post-pin pulling. I loved it, the bike handled like it's supposed to and my hands felt great. Certainly worth a try to all who are considering new bars.

I just went thru the process of pulling the pin on my '15.  The guys are right, it's an easy process but the most complicated part should not have been complicated at all but it's been made complicated by a marginal (at best) design, and that's the removal of the chrome "horseshoe" under the ignition switch.  What a pain.  I didn't break mine like some have done (thankfully!) but I sure was afraid I would.
I decided to use a marks-a-lot black ink pen to put a witness mark on the side of the handlebar clamp and then on top of my handlebar so I could see where it was positioned at stock.  (This witness mark also helped me to re-center the handlebars before tightening them down).  Then I put them where I wanted them and partially tightened the clamp.  Turns out I'd rolled the handlebars upward/forward about 3/32 of an inch at most per the witness mark, but the grips moved up substantially, perhaps 2 inches or so.  So far I like them in the new higher position, but I will need to put some miles on it before deciding whether or not to move them again, and which direction.

I never could get mine back in. Had to take it to the dealer for some other things so asked the, to do it. I compromised the plastic pin to the point of making it useless. They replaced it for me at no charge.

I actually got the horseshoe thing fairly easily thanks to the rest of you guys screwing it up. :D

Harry, a small amount at the clamp translates like you said to a fairly big deal at the grips. I did have to loosen and reposition the levers etc...

My dealers has several (7) 15's still available (all colors) and I'm considering one of them.  I'm currently on a CVO Road King and have 13" mini apes.  I've taken a demo of of the RGU and don't think I could live with the bars.  I found these for those who may still be interested.

I like the ones from road 6 customs and will get those if I decide to pull the trigger.

Yes, changing the seat will change things, such as my seating hight, which is about 2 inches lower, about 1 inch back also.  So makes bars feel taller.  Do not believe it changes the wrist angle.

Hi Dave,
After using those factory 47 handlebars for few months what is your opinion now? I am considering them as yaffes are still asking for a 60 days waiting period.
did you purchase any wiring or cables from the dealer to install them?

Wow, I am sure glad I gave up on Waiting on the Paul Yaffes.  I love them too, had them on my 12 SERG and have the Yaffe 14 on my SERK.

I really like the Factory 47 Bars.  I have over 12K miles on these bars now.  They are very comfortable and they look very good.  I would definitely get these again before putting up with the forever wait for the Paul Yaffe bars.

The factory 47 14" are about 2 inches shorter then the Yaffe 14", as Yaffe runs tall, about 15.25, and the Factory 47 14 are about 13.5.  No cables on wire purchased, was able to use all stock wiring and cables.

Thanks for all the information Dave.
While ordering bars from the factory 47 website they ask us if we are using the factory controls. You had mentioned in your post that you had ordered them without the pins for handlebar controls. Is it related to that? Could you explain that as I am totally confused.
Thanks.

Yes, its all related.  The 2015 Road Glide and 2015 road glide special have hand controls that are very different than are on our 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultras.  The 2015 RG and RGS have pins in their hand controls that go into slots in the handle bars.  This only allows so much rotation of the controls.  The handle bars have to have holes or slots at the controls to accommodate this.

Sounds like something new has been added to their web site.  There was no choice when I order, which is why I called.  My guess would be non factory hand controls on the web site.  I would call them and ask to be 100% sure.

The 2015 CVO does not have pins in the hand controls.  The CVO handle bars do not have holes for this.

If you order the regular Factory 47 bars, when you install your CVO hand controls you will have holes visible on both the left and right side near your CVO controls.

I had to call them and let them know I did not want any holes in the bars for or near the hand controls.

As an update to my previous post #63, I've put a fair amount of miles on the bike now with the handlebars rotated upwards about 2" over the stock position.
I do like them better now.  The feel is more sure, the handling seems more lively, and when the bike's parked it makes it a lot easier to turn the wheel if I need to.  Also, my fingers on my right hand don't fall asleep near as badly as they used to, but I'm beginning to think that may be a combination of handlebar angle and the new grips on these RGU's, that seem to put pressure right against a blood vessel that carries blood to a couple of my fingers.  Or at least that's what I'm thinking has been going on, as I've never had this problem before in my life.  It's been a weird dilemma, but it seems to have been lessened by rotating the bars up.   :nixweiss:

Well the thing is that I live in Qatar. And the shipping cost to my country for those bars is $260. So I wanted to make sure everything is right before I place my order.
I am so happy to be a part of this forum where there are people like Dave who are happy to help others.

Call them to make sure you get 100% what you need.  No holes for pins on the grip end of the bars.  They really are very nice bars and have very good finish.
