Photo's of clutch cable routing (near engine guard).
« on: July 26, 2007, 07:36:28 PM »

I have the 6 speed gear set with the longer clutch cable that the dealer installed.  I noticed the cable was binding on the left down tube and the engine guard.  I was wondering if the cable is routed correctly.  According to the manual there are 2 cable brackets.  The top bracket/clamp attached to the engine guard bolt is missing.  Would anyone have photos of how their clutch cable is routed by the down tubes?
Thanks

Keep in mind you have a hyd hose not a cable. As long as it isn't kinked it should be ok.Just route it and adj so its secure and clear of any chaffing.

I understand, just looking to see how others that have the 6 speed and longer line are routed.  The hydr cable is binding between the crash bar and down tube. Inquiring mind needs to know.....

The factory routing is up the right downtube into the fairing. In the pics it looks like yours crosses over and then goes into the left side of the fairing...

Your cable is routed incorectly.
The cable is supposed to go on the outside of the engine guard between the rear fender and engine guard and there is supposed to be a clip that holds it (38730-04 is the clip number)  looks like your clip is gone and the dealer (or someone) didn't know how to capture the hyd. line from flopping around so they put it behind the engine gard.

I'd get the clip and move the line.

Cheers,
J

Thanks, got it on order, the reason I was asking is that the cable get pinched between the downtube and engine guard intermit.  Thanks everyone for the info!! Hope to see some of you all at the HOG Down Home Ralley in Knoxville TN!!

Greetings Road Runner:

I have a 2012 Road King and noticed the same issue of the clutch cable chaffing at two points, against the downtube and engine guard.  Being an aircraft mechanic, chaffing is big no no and have rerouted the cable in front of the engine guard. However, I believe it should be secured and supported with clamps to eliminate chaffing. Did you have any luck ordering the clips/clamps?

Greetings Road Runner:
Is your clutch cable or hydraulic actuated?

Hydraulic, I'll have to check, I ran a longer line since I have the wild one handle bars.

Cheers!
