ALERT! ALERT! Have you seen this motorcycle?
« on: October 25, 2007, 05:14:22 PM »

This is on behalf of my husband, Ripp (rider in the picture), he is an avid user of this message forum. Be on the lookout for this motorcycle. It was stolen from our garage on Monday, 10/22 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm CST. Since they also stole the computer I am posting for him.

It is very unique in the fact it has eagle claws painted on the lower fairing.

If you see this motorcycle, please call the cops, post me a message. I really want to get my husband's motorcycle back!

Topeka, KS.

I'm down in Joplin.  Quite a few from the KC area are members here.  Crossing fingers and toes that someone will get lucky.

While it's generally not a good idea to post personal contact information publicly on an open forum you might post the case # for the incident report and the phone number of the police department investigating the loss.  Then if it is seen someone would have a place to report it in a timely enough fashion to hopefully do some good (along with calling their local PD of course).

YIKES! Sorry to hear about this horrible theft. It's a beautiful bike and distinctive. I hope the cops are on the ball and find it soon!

Guess hubby won't hate my outside dogs eating his papers quite so much after reading this! They are VERY protective of "the perimeter".

Best of luck!! Condolences to your hubby!

My vision and memory are keen to things like this! If seen in my area, I would be honored to report. Hope some dumb assed thief gets caught very quick! I'm sorry but I believe a thief, a looter or any combination thereof should be shot on sight. There is no excuse for this kind of thieving parasitic animal.

I had a bike stolen in 1994.  Through an incredible series of events, about 2 weeks after the theft, I learned that the bike was in a town about 120 miles west of where I lived at the time.  Unfortunately, the cops in my hometown where I filed the report coulda given 2 $hit$ when I went and told them about it.  They said they would look in to it and get back to me, but you guess it, they never did. >:(  The police in the town where the bike was were actually even less interested in trying to aprehend the low-life.  In the end, though, he got what he had coming.  He was being pursued for speeding in town and ran into a funeral procession at a cross road.  He got banged up quite a bit from what I understand, but charges were never filed for the theft of my bike.  The bike was totalled in the accident, but by the time this happened which was 4 months or so after he stole it, I had already settled with the insurance company (State Farm - too bad they're not always as great to deal with as B B's experience apparently was) and was riding a new bike.

I wish you the best of luck, but unfortunately, most of these stories don't have a happy ending. :(  I feel for you and Ripp . . . there is an unbelievable sense of being violated when you have your property stolen.  I will keep my eyes peeled here.

Thanks for all the kind words. We are fully insured with replacement cost but is just the thought of someone in our home.

I know that I have extra eyes through this board all over the country so imagine the party we will have if we find it through this board!

I realize the chances of finding it at this time are less than one percent.

However, if you do see it call your local police. The info here is for the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office in Topeka, KS case #07-07345, phone # 785-368-2200 ext. 2535.

Thanks!

I am so very sorry for the invasion into your home and privacy.

Thank you for reminding us that even if we are slipping down the road for a minute, to arm the security alarm.  We have a guard dog who guards our house ................ from inside.  She has access to the outside, but I guess she just feels braver with a sheet of glass between her and the intruders.  Our non-attached garage concerns us.  We made sure that the Brinks alarm guys ran wire to the garage, even though they did not want to.  We want the security system to guard what is in our garage, as much or more than what is in the house.

Pripp-
Start checking alot of different for sale sights, hd trader, ebay.  But dont look for the bike, look for parts, there's less of a chance that they can get caught this way.  Check pawn shops as well, most states require to Pawn shops to file what they have pawned or purchased from clients to the police via computer networks. Therefore it will show up if there is any pawn activity.  Did they just target the bike and take some other stuff as an oppurtunity or did they target the whole house.  Chance are the local PD probably has an idea on if they are local thugs or transients.  If they're local, in time they will get caught.  If they are transients, start doing your own searching for the items.  I.E. Craigs list, ebay, trader mags.  Most thugs are not computer savy, but they will sell the stuff to people who are and will try to resell it for profit.  They can also be charged for receiving stolen property.  Good luck, if I can do anything for you let me know, former Detective.  But I'm in GA so there's only so much I can do from over here.

Well it's been two weeks today and no Leeds. I just got a new computer and am back on line to search ebay and other sites for my bike or parts. I believe the punks were there to burglarize the house (where they got a 50 inch LCD TV, computer, stereo, and jewelery) and when they found the keys to my bike on the dresser they decided to take it also. My wife's 05 1200 custom sportster was right next to it and not touched.
We now have a monitored alarm system set up in the house.
If anyone knows of an 01 SERG for sale, perferably Blue, let me know. I sure would like to replace it with another one. At least the weather is starting to get cold here in Kansas so I can take some time to find what I really want.   Later Ripp

Sorry for the loss of your bike...  There is a beautiful 01 SERG at Wild Boar HD in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  It is not Blue - it is Black/Silver.  It has about 5000 miles on it and I believe it was at around $19000.  The bike belonged to the dealership owner and looks like a new bike.  There is a thread somewhere on the site that has a bunch of photos of the bike.  I saw the bike in person a few weeks ago when traveling thru Grand Rapids and can vouch that it looks like new...  It looks to be substaintally stock with very few add ons or alterations.  If the price isn't too steep, it would be hard to imagine a better example of an 01 around.

Weird that you mention the things other than the motorcycle being stolen. Professional Bike Theives steal motorcycles - - - -period. One of these guys had to know bikes to steal it, but grabbing the other stuff doesn't make sense. Here's my guess. The real thief saw your husband riding the bike, decided he wanted it and followed him home. Wrote down the address and then maybe checked out your house for a couple of nights. Ask your neighbors if they saw a strange van in the neighborhood over the past couple weeks. Vans are the most common method of stealing bikes, two or three people load the bike in the van wheels locked and all. Once the thief figured out when he had a good chance at you not being home, he talked a buddy or two into helping him load the bike in the van and in exchange told them they could take whatever they could grab as payment. What you want to do is have your husband and any of your friends put out the word to all of the indy shops within driving distance of you to let you know if anyone comes looking to buy a twin-cam FLH style frame. Sorry to say, there's several places you can buy em. Next the guy will be looking to buy a set of engine cases, a tran case and if he knows his business, a lower triple tree. Most of these scumbags don't know about the number sequence on the lower triple tree, so if you see the bike a few months down the road, that will probably be the thing that does him in. Wish I could say something more positive, but I doubt you'll see this bike again until it's reborn and when it is, the orginal VIN numbers will be long gone and the value of the bike with em. At that point, let the insurance company keep it. It won't be what you lost believe me. Again my condolences on losing such a sweet ride.

Hey Ripp, so sorry to read this thread.  :( Glad they didn't hurt your Lab and that no one was home to possibly get hurt.  I'm afraid BB is right on w/ the dismal outlook of finding your scooter, but maybe you'll get lucky.  I will definitely have a eye out for anything that might lead back to this scooter.  Luck to ya.  spyder

sadunbar, Thanks for the heads up. Only having 5000 miles on a 6 year old bike is rare. I have emailed them and requested a quote and asked some questions. I went to there web site and they have a picture of it on the showroom floor. I am origanally from Michigan and have driven back or flown back several times. It would not be a problem for a bike like this as long as the price is reasonable and it doesn't have a fuel injection problem like so many of these do.
I would rather have the blue, but with only 4,875 miles on it, I think I could get to like the black and silver. It appears to have a different rear seat set up then the one I owned and it doesn't appear to have the luggage rack on the trunk that I thought was stock.

Somewhere on this site there are a bunch of pictures of the bike.  Maybe dOOd can help point out where the thread is...

Don't remember the thread and couldn't find anything when I searched. However this bike is showing up on the dealers website - 2001 SERG.

Somewhere on this site there are a bunch of pictures of the bike.  Maybe dOOd can help point out where the thread is...

Scott
Is this the bike Scott?

Here is the thread where Chip was looking for a Road Glide, I was kind of surprised he didn't jump on this one, pic's were from courter. Here's a link.

If the price isn't too steep, it would be hard to imagine a better example of an 01 around.

later...Scott

Not to nit-pick or take away from the fact that it's a super-clean bike, but just wanted to point out it does have SE heads on it, so some motor modifications have been done.  Also, it has a king tour-pak style backrest pad, passenger floorboards and aftermarket slip-on mufflers.  Still, it's a nice, low-mileage bike and it's tough to be overly choosey when you're looking at something they only made 750 or so of and you're looking for one 7 years after it was first produced. :2vrolijk_21:  But, oh, that price! :o :nervous:  Maybe insurance will pony up?!?

There was also this black/grey one that "FrankD" posted about in the 3rd Part For Sale section of the site on October 22:

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=17471.0

It sounds interesting, too.  2-owner, 10,000 mile bike priced at $17,500, near Boston, MA.

I had not noticed the heads...depending on what was done - that could be a good thing (IMO).  I put a king tour pak style backrest on my 01 SERG at my wife's request too.  The passenger floorboards are a plus in IMO also - not that I care - but my wife prefers them, so she gets them....  I sold my 01 black/grey SERG in 05 for $22,500 (with 15,000 miles on it).  It was a spotless clean bike also.  The current owner is still thrilled with the bike.

I have not seen a cleaner 01 for sale since I sold mine - and with those miles - and the fact it is a one owner (dealer owned) bike, you would think it has been well taken care of.  If I was looking to add to the stable, I would inquire about the motor mods.  If the motor mods seemed reasonable, personally, I would jump at the chance to buy it.

But - to each their own.  I am less hung up on "stock" and more interested in making a bike what I want it to be.  Resale value or "stock" is never much of a consideration for me...   To each their own...

If I came across as implying he should look past this bike because of the mods, or even the price, I apologize.  Everything appears to be tastefully done and clean bikes can/should definitely command a higher price.  I was merely trying to point out some of the things that I noticed in the photo were not stock.

I wish Ripp all the best in locating a replacement SERG.

P.S. To answer a question that Ripp had, the tour-paks did not come with luggage racks stock.

Nope - I did not take your response that way at all...  :2vrolijk_21:

I was only giving my perspective on the bike - and pointing out that personally, these modifications are desireable to me.  But I understand that others prefer a stock - less altered bike...and to each his own...  :)

Glad you found the pics... Sorry have not read this in a while.  How are you getting along with your insurance co?  Are they settling yet?  If you need any help with Wild Boar, I'd be glad to do whatever I can.  I talked with them before when S/B was thinking about a RG purchase.  They didn't want to talk to a "mediator" too badly, but Shannon is the sales manager, and she's good to deal with.  It is one of the owner's bikes, so it is considered a consignment.  Any offer will be presented to the owner.

Unfortunately not. I should be getting my insurance check this week. My dealer here says it should be worth about $17,500 with no extras. My insurance said they will pay for up to $3,500 in accessories. Since it's already a Screaming Eagle I only have about $2,ooo in extras. So I'm thinking if I get a check for around $19,000 or $19,500 I'll be happy. I've already emailed the Grand Rapids HD dealer about the one they have and although it's not blue I'll be gaining about 40'000 miles off the speedometer from what I had. I'm going to make an offer that I think is a little more reasonable than the $19'000 they want. If they don't go for it I'm leaning toward an 07 Road Glide for about the same money and over the next year or two change it into what I would be more happy with. ( maybe 110 cubes and a flame job) :orange: :mango: :pepper:

Ripp,
Again sorry about your bike being stolen. As to replacing it. Buy the CVO. Don't get me wrong, I love LD my 07 ORG, but no matter how much $$$ I spend on it, it still isn't a CVO. I know some would disagree, but given that the MOCO doesn't seem interested in offering another CVO RG, the ones out there just keep getting more and more valuable. You know with those that get stolen and those that get wrecked, there are fewer and fewer of them around. The less there are, the more they're worth. So for whatever my $0.02 is worth, buy the CVO SERG, you'll be glad you did even if you pay a few dollars more than you think you should. As SCRM-R says " it's only money, I can make more "    :D

There's 4 different blue SERG's listed on moco's used bike section.  One has 36k miles and is in Colorado, but no picture.  There's also a black one listed, but it's not the low mileage one you've already found.  I only looked for 01's.

I bought one of them. (sort of a back door purchase thru my dealer here for a great price)
The one in Colorado is at Thunder Mountain Harley and I asked Talon to investigate it.
He said it's rough (by his and my standards) so it was out. Especially at 18K.
I will look into the others.
Thanks !

Ripp,

Any luck on finding another SERG? How did you make out with the insurance company? I had a buddy who had an FXR stolen out of his garage, and the insurance paid him the "fair market value" of the bike, whatever that means. I hear others only pay you a portion of what it is worth. I'm guessing no company pays for all the stuff we put on it though.

Somehow I missed this thread when it was first posted. I would love to get my hands on the sob who stole your bike. It has to be the lowest of low who steal from someone else & is a direct invasion of ones privacy.  I have never had a bike stolen but did have my shop broken into years back where they stole one service vehicle cube van & all the tools that they could fit inside.I hope you make out okay on your new ride.

I did, back in the late 70s. It was the sickest feeling I ever had. I got it back though, the guys who stole were smart enough to bust the steering lock and hot wire it, but too dumb to turn the fuel on. They rode it till the carbs ran out of gas and then dumped it down hill near my house. So I never got to see what the insurance replacement policy/value was, I did get it repaired though.

I had only 2 leads on it and nothing came from either one >:(. (The insurance (Foremost thru Harley) paid off real nice :orange:. They said fair market value, after calling my local dealer, was $17,500 and they would pay up to $3000 more for upgrades. After all was said and done they cut me a check after my deductable for $19,400. I thought that was fair.
I found several good 01 SERG's , but after thinking about it I decided to buy a new Street Glide FLHX. I liked the improvements (New Stereo, 6 speed trans, 96 cubes, and ABS brakes) and only cost me a couple more grand.
I figure I can build the motor over the next couple years and after it's about 6 or 7 years old and starting to show some wear on the black pearl paint I can put a flame job on it like the last couple bikes I had before the Road Glide. Although I keep my bikes in good condition I put enough miles on them that after 6 or 7 years of normal wear from rocks kicking up and light scratches it would require a new paint job.
If I could afford several bikes so I didn't have to put alot of miles on one I would love to have another SERG. It was my first bagger and I really loved that bike, but I have a feeling this FLHX will fill my needs just fine :2vrolijk_21:.
As a matter of fact I ordered it in mid December and it just came in Saturday. They started to put it together today so I am expecting to have it tomorrow or Friday. I'll post some pics here next week some time.
It was in the lower 70's here today so I took the day off and took my wifes 1200 Custom Sportster out for a long ride. It ain't the same as a bagger, but I can remember a time I would have given my left, you know what, for one.

Losing a motorcycle this way sucks huge, and yours was in my opinion a very special H-D, but it sounds like your insurance company did right by you and at least that part of it turned out well. Thanks for letting us know

Ripp,

I'm glad it's working out for you. I'm glad they paid for some of your upgrades, however as we all know, there is no way we could ever get back what we put into them. How long did you have to wait for the check? I know some companies make owners wait up to three weeks in case the bike is recovered, even though they acknowledge that the bikes are usually stripped and parted out, or shipped over seas. Do insurance companies pay extra for for special edition or limited run bikes, or are they all the same? How did they decide "Fair Market Value", did you have to find same year SERGs for sale for them to work with?

Enjoy the new ride.

What I've learned in talking to people over the years who've had a motorcycle (or car) stolen is the biggest delay is the Insurance Company getting a copy of the Police Report. My agent told me that in big cities like New York, LA, Chicago etc it can take 6 months or longer for the PD to send out the report. My advice here would be if this happens to you, go to the PD yourself a few days after you've talked to the officers who do the report and get a copy yourself to give your insurance company. As the victim, I believe you have a right to the report as soon as it's completed and on file.

At my PD we provide you with the your report case number and you can get a copy of the report within a couple days. Before we were computerized you could have gotten it that day. Ah, progress.....aint' it great. I showed a picture of Ripp's scooter to my guys at roll call.  When the TT races are in town, I do it again.  You never know!

Ironhorse, I got a copy of the police report and sent it in and had a check within 3 weeks of the theft. They even called me first and said that they were sending the check that day and let me know the amount over the phone, which I thought gave it a personal touch.

To find fair market value, they called Topeka HD (my local dealership) and Riverfront HD in nearby Lawrence, Kansas, which both know me and gave them the $17,500 figure not including upgrades. The insurance co. also said they used HD Trader magazine or something like that.

Thanks Black Diamond, but if they find it now I would guess the insurance company would own it, but I would love to see the scumbag that stole it get busted. I still wonder why my house was picked. If it was totally at random or if there was some kind of connection. I will probably never know.
I should have my new one this weekend, but they are calling for rain :divers009: Friday turning into snow  :smilie_daumenneg:by Saturday morning.

It's this sort of thing which makes tou want to fit a tracker system to the bike.  Then again would you want it back after it hasd been stolen - in my case I'm not so sure.   I think bike thieves over here in the UK tend to strip the bikes down and sell them as spares although not knowing any thieves I can't say for sure.

I really am sorry for your loss, you must be absolutely devastated.

That is a good point, getting your bike back with the fork lock, and ignition all busted, and who knows what else they may have done to it.

As for the tracking device, now days the more "sophisticated" theives take stolen vehicles and leave them in known neighborhood streets or in parking lots to "cool down", meaning if it is going to be tracked and recovered, it's usually done within the first 48 hours. That way they can keep an eye on it. If no one gets it within a few days, they pick it back up and take it to a chop shop or shipping location. Regardless how it's done, I can't imagine theives being real careful when they boost your bike toss it into the back of a truck and quickly drive off.  Well it sounds like most insurance companies give you what it's worth on a private party sale as opposed to what the dealer will take it on a trade in. That would be adding insult to injury.

I like the idea of a tracking device. That way you not only find the bike fast, but maybe catch the guy that stole it.
I got my new FLHX yesterday about 3:00 and although the high here was 40 I managed to get about 70 miles on it. What a great ride. I put my clearview windshield on it this morning and am anxious to try it out today. It's about 3 or 4 inches taller than stock and about the same color ( I ordered the dark grey) so it doesn't change the looks to much, but I'm hoping that the recurve in it well help direct the wind over my head.
Smiler, I think devastated is the wrong word here. Really pissed off and angry would fit me better. I grew up in the city of Detroit and saw a lot of devastation. I don't know if you know much about Detroit, but it was a tough blue collar city back when I was growing up. I was working on summer vacation during high school 4 blocks from where the riots broke out in the late sixties. Brother, that was devastation. I'm sure you have cities like that in the UK. Glad them days are over. The funny thing is my wife (from Kansas) didn't like Detroit so we moved here to get away from that kind of life and have 6 acres out in the country here. I never had my place broken into until we moved here. Kind of ironic isn't it?

Hi Ripp - I suppose your right, but that's life.   Detroit sounds like Liverpool or Bradford but after saying that there's a great heartbeat in these cities.

My oldest is 3rd year Med at U Michigan in Ann Arbor and her mother about has a coronary every time she mentions going into Detroit. All due respect to any site members living there, but it makes my top 5 of worst cities in the USA list.

Michigan is a beautiful state, but Detroit is the arm pit. The part I grew up in was rough back then, but now I wouldn't go to that neighborhood without an assault vehicle.

I have spent the last 30 years working for an OEM supplier to the automotive industry....  Detroit and the surrounding area is a sad and sometimes scary place... :(

tuff is an understatement......I lived in Detroit from 1960 till 1969 and those few years of my life were some of the worst.  Detroit is not an armpit it is the
Assh^%&e of America......and I only live 40 min from Chester and 45 min from Camden and they are bad, but are child's play next to Detroit. Flint is also so Nice......I lived less than 10 miles from the center of Detroit in a Blue Collar Neighborhood. The riots of 1968 will never leave my memory. Not many times have you seen an army in an American city fully armed with tanks and personell carriers like the Summer of 1968. I recently took the family to visit where I grew up......and it was worse than I remember (that was hard to believe)

I went to Widener University back in the late 80's. I've always wondered how bad it has gotten?

I was in Detroit in from November through December in 1985. It was so cold the power windows on my rental car froze. There was ice forming on the inside of the hotel room (Ponchatrain) overlooking the lake. The only people I saw out on the sub zero streets were addicts and hookers. All I did was work during the day, and go to Greek Town and drink at night. If I lived there I'd be an alcoholic and weigh 300 pounds. Even the strippers were ugly, I had to go to Canada to see decent looking gals. I was only there for month, but it felt like a year. I would describe it as Compton with snow and ice.

I had a friend that worked for one of the car manufacturers, there was a stretch on his way home that he got a flat one night and barely got out of it before his wheel disintegrated.

There was no way he said, that he was stopping to fix that tire in that stretch.

It was definitely bad, real bad.  I imageine the economy with the Big Three failing isn't helping any either.

That is one of the big problems.......the Rust Belt is dependent on the Auto industry and with 20 years of decline it has left Michigan and Ohio in really bad positions.

Ohio seems to be in a better spot than Michigan, but it is downright depressing to see what has happened to

the manufacturing base there.

Ripp,  I am sorry for your bike loss and for hijacking the thread (did not mean to) Detroit is such an easy target.

I hope the new ride fills the hole that the old one left..........

Good riding My friend!
