Which Radio Should I Upgrade To
« on: November 06, 2009, 10:13:00 AM »

Anyone upgraded their radio in the 2000 or 2001 SERG?  Would welcome any advice regarding which system to research.  Did the new system allow control from the handlebar controls.

I have removed the 12 disc changer and looking for at minimum, AM/FM with MP3 connectivity.

Thanks for any advice and direction.

Here's on option for consideration.  First link is HawgWired Sony adapter kit.  Everything you need to put a Sony radio in the bike, make it plug and play and keep the handlebar controls functional.

http://hawg-wired.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=36

Second link is a Sony marine grade radio w/ipod controller, a front accessible auxiliary input and the ability to play MP3 music CDs.  Unlike a lot of their units this one can be set to make its display shine in a red color that effectively matches what the display color was in the original radio.  Link is to Crutchfield's ad for the radio but they can be found cheaper on eBay.

Last piece you might consider is the front panel weather cover at the last link below.  The marine radio is supposed to stand up to a little moisture.  But highway speeds in a thunderstorm or a careless bike wash isn't a little moisture.  So it's nice to have the little cover to quickly pop on when necessary.  I also put it in place if the bike has to be parked overnight someplace when the dew might be heavy.  Look for part number SPLSH-1 toward the bottom of the page here:

Twolane, I am still planning to call you and pick your brain, have been swamped in the evenings this past week and in Fayetteville for football games this week and last.  I'll give you a call next week in the evening.

Thanks for this info.

I had to change the stock radio on the 01 SERG also. (long story)

I went with the Hawg Wired and Sony combination.

Works great!

Radio blends in nicely with the light faced gauges.  Can't believe you didn't get that radio mounting bezel painted blue though ??? .   :huepfenlol2:

Damn you.

The thoughts of taking that apart to paint it kills me.
Damn you again.

Now that's all I will see when I look at it.

I thought of that, but too late.  You'd already seen it.

Wouldn't be too bad though.  Not pulling the whole inner.  Just yanking the radio.  That's one place where the task is a lot easier on the Road Glide than on any type of Electra Glide.

Hey, by the way, that splash shield for the front of the radio is available for the Road Glides now too.  When I put the Sony radio in the red bike a couple years ago they didn't have one for a Road Glide then (or if they did I missed it).  Noticed them having it about six months ago.  I'm not a big fan of E-Glide Goodies but they're the only vendor I've seen offer that fitted plastic cover.  And it's only 20 bucks and it's just a plastic cover.  Not like they can really screw up much there.

Also.....   Hawg Wired will sell that bezel by itself.  So you could get one shot and not have the bike down.

SBB and Twolane,
That's why I am trying to get my act together.  Planning on taking the bike down in Jan/Feb time frame to do all the work that needs to be done inside the fairing.  I hope to make it to the CVO event in MV next year, I'll plan on reminding you SBB about the bezel not being painted while pointing out how well the vivid black inner fairing and bezel looks, that would probably really pop if it matched the guage trim.  Add that to the list of painted items for the inner fairing.

All kidding aside, I apprecaite all of your help.  That eglidedoodies site has some great stuff.  Ching, Ching, I can hear the register adding up now.

I noticed that eglides has some inner fairing acoustic pads, any of you using these?

Thanks - great stuff!!!!!!!!

SBB - not sure how you have your GPS mounted, but Ram Mounts make a chrome mounting system as opposed to their standard black mounts, just saying there's another opportunity to drop a few dollars.

Noticed those also and hadn't seem them there before.  Strictly my own assumption here, but for what it's worth here it is.  They probably don't hurt anything.  But remember, we're barreling down the hiway on a bike.  Truly quality sound isn't what we're going to get with wind, exhaust, vehicle, semi-truck and other noises sharing our acoustic space.  We're after sound we can use; that's about it.  Things like acoustic pads may be excellent additions for controlled environments and/or quiet automobiles.  But on a bike my guess is they are distinctions with little difference that someone thought we would pay for.  The proverbial well packaged fart in a whirlwind.

All I can is that you better hurry and give Don a call because when I called him a month or so ago about my fairing removal, even though he was able to help me out, he didn't have many good brain cells left.

He's working on the Cliff Clavin, of Cheers fame, theory of culling the herd.  You know, like a buffalo herd being chased by a pack of wolves.  The herd as a whole is only as fast as the slowest buffalo.  So the wolves provide the herd a service by killing the slower buffalos, thus letting the herd speed up.  Your brain works the same way, it is only as fast as the slowest cells.  When you drink you kill off brain cells.  Of course you only kill the slowest and weakest ones so your brain then speeds up.  That's why after a few drinks you feel smarter...
