Figure eventually I'll replace, chrome, cover, or alter every bolt on the bike. Just a matter of time.

That's perfect.  It looks like it was meant to be there.

Went for a ride yesterday with a buddy and, after enjoying a nice lunch, came out and the bike would not start. Starter just made that whirring sound, no engagement. Thank God for AAA, had the bike trailered 50 miles to my HD shop. Mechanic said that because of the SE upgrade when the bike was new (TC 88 to 95), I should have compression release installed as the compression is too high and burning out the starter. I put a new high compression starter on in November of 08 (a chrome one, even) so the thing has only had two summers of use. Is that an average life for a starter or is there something else going on here?

Well, the problems turned out to be numerous, serious and rather pricey. Starting with a bad starter clutch assembly and moving on to shattered cam tensioners requiring a new hydraulic cam plate and oil pump. From there, they found that the original SE 95 upgrade kit had been poorly done with pushrods installed improperly so we added a new pushrod kit. The service manager said that the old chain cam tensioner was a frequent failure for that year and motor and that the new hydraulic model was a vast improvement. He said had the bike started and been driven another 50 miles, a catastrophic failure in the cam tensioners would have destroyed the whole motor so I guess I was lucky.

While the bike was in, I had them put on a new HD LED tail light as the Kuryakyn one was going haywire and also installed some new mirrors and front LED turn signals. Photos to follow.

Got the bike out 24 hours before leaving for a 4 day trip around Lake Superior and it ran very well the entire 1,500 miles. These are the first serious service issues I have had on the bike. I've put on 20,000 miles in 3 riding seasons and this little service episode added $.15 per mile driven to the cost of ownership.

It was good to enjoy a beautiful, trouble free trip right after shelling out some $'s on repairs!

Finally found some mirrors I liked. Trouble was, they didn't have built in turn signals like the old Kuryakyn ones so I had to find a turn signal solution. Don't really like the stock front signals so went looking for something that would be as small as possible and yet provide safe visibility for oncoming traffic. Found an LED solution from Badlands called Flame Throwers - even fits the theme of the bike. Technically, they are not a legal turn signal because they don't have enough amber surface area but they are plenty bright so I will risk a ticket.

From the back you can't even tell the signals are there.

The mirrors are sweet because they already have golded flames! Had to do some minor mods on both the mirrors and the chrome brake housing. Had to add some additional adjustability into the mirrors as they wouldn't angle up enough and the front opening in the chrome housing had to be expanded a bit so that the flame stalk would clear the chrome. More Dremel work. Everything turned out well tho.

Shot with the signal on. They start out with just one lit LED and ramp up to all lit within about a second.

As I posted before, you and JCZ are on a different level. Looks great, as always.
