Harley wheel and tire insurance
« on: July 23, 2012, 12:39:25 PM »

Picture your self riding down the road, on coming traffic, traffic right behind you and a mini van in front with a 9 foot deep ditch to you right. Then out of no where, some pecker wood leaves you a present in the road. A piece of slab wood 28 inches long, a foot wide and 5 inches thick. The question that goes through you bean at light speed, do I swerve left? No being a hood ornament is not good for your health record. Do I slam on the brakes, no the F150 that is right on my back is really going to hurt. Do I put her in that river Vally of a ditch, don't think so. Whoops in that nano second all these thoughts are going through your bean is too late any ways.  WACK!!!  Hit it straight on, send the bike over onto a front end wheelie, when the back comes down it is so violant that it opens your hard bags and throws some of the contents on the road way. As you are getting control, you hear that ah S!#t of tires screeching behind you. The guy comes bailing out of the F150 and screams "that was awesome dud, how did you not just go down". After I pulled the seat leather out of my back side I kinda snarl at the guy in the truck as I am walking back to claim my now prize peace of wood that I split in half with my bike.  Front rim bent and broken, right side rotor gone, front tire shot, axle bent....Trailered it to my dealer and after the crash inspection all repairs, parts and labor zero dollars!!! No deductible, not one dime out of pocket!  $2200.00 worth of damage, God am I glad I got the Tire and wheel insurance from Harley when I bought my bike!!! It just paid for itself!  Pretty bad when the state boy says " how did you not go down". Luke and 40 years of two wheels!

Good to hear you didn't go sliding up the road.  :2vrolijk_21:

I've never had a wheel tire warranty however I will look into with the purchase of the new bike after reading such accounts of wheel/tire damage.

Bike was out of action for a month. Harley does not give up CVO parts very easily. Rode all day last Saturday, no issues. I will say I would much rather Buy a new front tire than to ever go through that again. State Boy went to Mr. Woody's house. Many similar issues in that area for awhile now. He died last week...of natural causes. I am genuinely sad for his family, but his son has picked up the ball and is running with the scissors. Sat. when I went by there, they had three way overloaded trailers ready to go.

Any indication that the authorities plan to do anything to curtail this activity, or are your authorities as useless as the ones around here that never pull over folks with uncovered loads (state law) or improperly secured loads (state law).  It seems the only time the law is enforced around here is after a major accident, when they are tallying up all the charges on the ticket.  Prevention isn't something they seem to understand.  This subject is near and dear to my heart; while this stuff is often just the source of damage to other vehicles, we biker's know it can be much worse for us.

I'm glad to hear you were able to escape serious injury and the bike is back in one piece.

What did your dealer charge for the insurance.  I was looking at adding this when I purchased my bike, but I really felt that there was some serious mark up in the price above and beyond.

So just to get this straight, the wheel and tire ins alone paid for everything? I thought it would only pay for the wheel and tire. And then had a limit of only the dollar amount of the oem equipment, not any custom wheels or tires.

Purchased at the same time as my 2010 FLHXSESG.  Was I think like $1400.00 or something will have to look at the contact when I get home. I mean, the dealer did a complete fairing off inspection all the way to the rear fender for damage. All labor and all parts which are custom CVO parts $0.00 dollars  F R EE!!!  Sorry no pictures. This family lives less than 3 miles from a State Patrol SGT.  Farming community, pretty close ties. It will happen again, saw a big piece beside the road this am.

That was/is my understanding, It covers OEM wheels.

Now if it covers aftermarket wheels then it becomes a far more valuable policy.

Road debris is way too common. I hit a cinder block on the Malahat in my Jeep...oncoming semi, bicycles on the right...folded the inner wheel right over.  Two bags of sandblasting sand fell, split and spread across a lane and a half on Groat Road (nice little twisty) in Edmonton...I hit the wall and scraped to a stop with lots of plastic damage to an FJ.

The only places I've seen them monitoring is near the gates to the dump.....after they have already traveled and lost stuff on the way there...maybe the roving traffic patrols should be a little more proactive.

I strongly suggest that anyone considering the policy actually read the entire contract to verify exactly what is and isn't covered.  That contract is the only thing that matters if the chit hits the fan, not what a dealer tells you.

The following is from a newsletter that was sent out by a dealer back in 2010.  In this particular article, they do indeed claim the coverage is good for custom wheels, not just OEM.  Now I would guess there is probably some fine print somewhere, thus my suggestion to study the actual contract carefully.

------------------
"Harley Wheel and Tire Coverage – You may not be aware that you can now purchase wheel and tire coverage independent of the Harley-Davidson Extended Service Plan (ESP). Even if your bike is several years old, you can purchase wheel and tire coverage at the time you purchase new tires and/or wheels from your dealer. Up to seven years’ coverage is available (one year starts at $379, up to $679 for the full seven years). The plan provides repair or replacement for original or replacement wheels (including custom wheels) or tires that fail due to road hazards. No deductible, no maximum number of occurrences, and rental, towing, lodging, and meal charge reimbursement included. You can transfer remaining coverage to the next owner if you sell your bike."

There are big margins in extended service plans and wheel and tire coverage, but the prices for these things ARE negotiable, though the dealer will tell you they are not.  Where they have you over the barrel, to some extent, is if you want to finance the entire purchase price of the bike (or after whatever downpayment you do), and not buy the ESP/Tire/Wheel coverage seperately.  If memory serves me, both together for 7 years runs arournd $1800, but you can get them down off that price if you stick to your guns.  In the neighborhood of $1400 is reasonable, and they are still making good money, just not absurd money.  You just have to remember that it's an insurance policy and nothing more.  I have it on my bike, just for peace of mind.  If I had a few hundred thousand sitting in the bank, I wouldn't worry about much, but this old man will never see that day, so I buy the plan to keep from dipping into my meager bank account "just in case".

In this case, it more than paid for itself...but, it's an odds game, like any insurance policy you have.

Glad it worked out for you!
