I know it's the perception that each year of a CVO model it's supposed to be more and more things added.  But lowers and audio and so many bells and whistles were never what a Road King was intended to be.  So, love it or hate it, at least this year's Road King is a Road King again rather than some King Glide or whatever it tried to be previously.

I didn't even look at the prices.  Did the price go down to reflect what's lost from year to year?

Kind of like coffee when they went from a pound to 13 ounces but kept the price the same.

I guess the cool saddlebag lid speakers are gone forever... along with the speakers in the lowers, as the "Twin Cooling" is put on more bikes.

The fairinged bikes could still accommodate speakers of course.  And guys will add them.  Here's on bit of speculation based on nothing other than the poor expectations I commonly have of the MoCo.  They simply didn't have enough design/fabrication engineers to roll out the new "one touch" lids, latches, etc and also get a separate version of the same lid with speakers at the same time.

That's just the speaker kit.  "Sold separately" are the lids needed to go with them.  At least on a first quick glance I didn't see the new lids yet offered.  So either I just missed them (entirely possible, I wasn't that motivated to look hard) or Mother Harley doesn't have a speaker version of the new lid ready yet.

And even those speakers are currently shown as not being stocked.  Harley just didn't have enough ducks in a row to make that available with the bikes.

But they had time to come out with an upgrade kit instead of just putting them on the '14 SERK like last year's SERK had?

Less for the same price. My coffee analogy still holds...

Sure seems like they took a lot of content out of the CVO RK this year.  Lowers, iPod player, Amp, 4 speakers, Bag lids to accomodate speakers...How much is that all worth?  North of $2K?  They added the daymaker headlamp and the fork, motor and brake upgrades...not sure that's a wash....Don't think I'd swap my Anniversary CVO RK for the new one although I like the color schemes...

Of all the hype and "improvements" that 2014 brought, the Road King fared the best of the lot. JMHO  I could see this bike in my future.   :drink:

The RK purists sure got what they want... a bare bones SE touring bike without all of the frilly add-ons. It looks nice, and will probably sell right out... in large measure because its only $28.5K.

Just looks rather plain next to the fully tricked-out '13 SERK.

However... I think they just RUINED the rear fender fascia with those FUGLY taillights! Good GRIEF! They should have left THAT as it was. Those vertical bars don't go with ANYTHING on the rest of the bike, and look like a last-minute amateurish styling gaffe...

Ken, you are dead spot on ...On the lights...  I just talked to my Dealer who is at Denver, and he said lots of people there could not believe the damage they did to the backlights in terms of styling on the Road King

Funny how a year changes how I think about things and feel about them.

In 13 I was torn between the Anniversary CVO road Glide and the Anniversary CVO road King.  I am a die hard Road glide fan.  The 13 was to be my local bike, and a hot rod with a built motor.  Friends and my wife were all like what do you need two CVO road glides for, get the King.  The sound system on the King was what helped me decide to go that way.

Don't get me wrong, I love my King and am very glad I chose it over the CVO Road Glide for 13.  However, after 7800 miles and 8 months my thoughts on the sound system sure have changed.  Its really a waist of money on the King.  Lid speakers cant be heard over 25 mph and they take up way to much saddle bag space.  Front speakers can barley be heard over 60 mph.

So, I would not have got the king in 13 had it not had a sound system.  However, after riding one for the time I have, I love it.  It makes a great hot rod, very versatile.  However I would not want the sound system.

I think the 14 CVO King is a better value for the money, lower cost, bigger bags, no lowers to toast you in the summer.  Only two things I do not like about the 14 CVO King, the handle bars and the FUGLY tail lights.

Love the idea of stiffer front forks.  Love the paint matched head light nacelle.  I like the One hand open bag lids.  I will have to wait to see the paint over all in person to make that judgement.  Should see the all up in Milwaukee next week.

Overall I think I like the 14 King better, but Keeping my 13 Anniversary for a very long time, its a great hot rod

Thats to funny,  my 13 is my second CVO RK, 07 was my first.  I traded largely because of the stereo system and the lowers.  Last night we rode to dinner 50 minutes away listening to the stereo at 70mph.  We are a non helmet state, so dont know if that factors into your opinion but we can hear the stereo just fine.  We both comment that it is better than my RG with J&M system.  My GF loves the bag speakers.  I am so glad I grabbed a 13, I already got the LED lights installed and much prefer the 13, although I do love the green paint.  I also am not a fan of the painted black engine, just cant believe that will hold up and look good down the road.

Reminds me of the old saying "I may be drunk, but you are ugly and tomorrow morning I will be sober"  in other words - you can always remove the lowers on the 13 (as some have done) but to add them to a 14 would be a major PITA (if for some reason you wanted to)!

I have been in both helmet and non helmet states, wear a beanie when the law makes me, or a 3/4 in winter.  My Stock sound system in my 12 CVO road glide blows the sound system in the 13 CVO King out of the water unless stopped or under 25 mph.  My issue is the wind noise drowns out the stereo on the King.  Use the same Ipod and play lists on both bikes.  Like most over 5'11" the wind splitter was not designed for us, I am 6'1".  If I duck 3 inches or more it sounds good.  I have never had a passenger on the CVO road glide, no back seat, no passenger pegs. I have rode my wife once on the King, about five miles.  I will ride her in the parade in Milwaukee for the 110th with our chapter flag.  After that trip the pegs and back seat will be gone from my King.

Black engine looks fine on my CVO road Glide, its got 29000 miles on it.  Looks fine on the 13 King it has 7900 miles on it and will be over 11K mid sept.

However... I think they just RUINED the rear fender fascia with those FUGLY taillights! Good GRIEF! They should have left THAT as it was. Those vertical bars don't go with ANYTHING on the rest of the bike, and look like a last-minute amateurish styling gaffe...

and to think those will be the rear lights on the next cvo street glide and cvo road glide.

Well, I will be KEEPING the Honey Badger for the duration... and neither of us give a CHIT about a new SESG. Now that Willie G. is gone, I don't expect to ever see another SESG... which is fine, because as you said they would probably screw it up with those awful taillights anyway.

BTW, has anyone noticed that you can buy a fully-loaded non-CVO Ultra Limited in the two-tone paint for LESS than the bare-bones '14 SERK? The SERK paint, 110 engine, Agitator wheels, etc. don't seem worth it to me. If I were in the market, this year, I'd go with the Amber Whiskey/Vivid Black Limited any day... you get a LOT more bang for the buck.

Or maybe I'm just not cool enough to see the attraction of the '14 SERK...

I think a lot of the best designers are probably gone now that Willie G. Is not around any longer. Or maybe they were never that good in the first place, and they are lost without his guidance. At any rate, the crew in charge of styling there now doesn't seem to really understand the heritage nor the need for continuity and true tasteful style. They seem to just be throwing a lot of new stuff on, without really thinking holistically about how the whole look of the bike hangs together, and what statement it makes.

Or maybe they are just compelled to make some needless change just for the sake of not staying the same. It's seems as if they think the customers are idiots who will buy whatever new crap they decide to put out.

There are some of us who just do not like a batwing bike, me being one of them.  Funny thing is I wanted a CVO street glide so bad before they ever came out with one.  At that point I had never rode a bike with a fairing.  Well the 09 SERG came out and a salesmen convinced me that is what I really wanted.  So I rode both a SG for a Day then a RG for a day.  Disliked the SG, felt boxed in, did not like, cross winds or the shake going by an 18 wheeler.  The RG was much better, on my second one.

As for the King, I like it much better than a street glide.  Makes a great hot rod.  Also it really is the most versatile of all the touring bikes.

I did not get a SERGU for the simple fact, did not have the cool SESG or SERG rear fender and bags, plus had a King tour pick which I do not want, I almost never ride two up.

So at this point I would want a SERK much more than the Limited even if you get more for the money.  For a long time you get more for your money with a Ultra then a street glide, but the street glide is the best seller.

Who know in 15 if there is no CVO RG I may have to get a CVO Ultra Limited, but I am really hoping they have an RG or even a SG in CVO.

The 14 CVO King is great in my opinion with the exception of the FUGLY tail lights.  Wonder if the 13 lights could swapped in place of those FUGLY lights. I love my 13 CVO King.

All of that is totally fair, and I can appreciate it. The SERGU never appealed to me, but CUSEs never really have either.

I really wanted an '09 SERGC in the orange/black when I bought the Honey Badger, but couldn't find one. I was never that into SGs until the SESG came out with the stretched bags and the SERGC-style rear fascia. When I saw my bike I fell in love with it instantly, probably because of the Hot Citrus paint. I bought it, then ordered a TP for it the day after. Go figure...

I have always LOVED the RK, and when they came out with the '13 SERK, with the SERGC/SESG-style rear fascia and bag, and the lower/bag speakers with the iPod, I was very happy. I would have bought one if didn't already have the Honey Badger. The red one is my fave, but I like the blue, too. Oddly, being an ORANGE guy, I do NOT think orange would really work on that bike at all.

It's just kind of disappointing to me that the '14 SERK is so bare-bones compared to the richly-appointed '13... but I've never been the "purist" type. I like the custom look.

Yes, all the '14 touring bikes have the new, bigger bags.

Bigger and easier (gotta try em first) opening.

August 10th, sitting under an over pass just North of Sioux City, IA waiting out a BIG thunderboomer, we had some company in the form of a HD financial employee out of Chicago.  He was headed home after Sturgis and no, he wasn't the pool boy.  He was pretty good about keeping quiet about the new '14s coming and wouldn't answer any of my questions.  However, I did try.  Of course we all know what they look like now but then, it was all tight lipped.  Couple comments he made stuck with me and with the '14s released now, I understand.
I asked him if there were any water cooled bikes.  He wouldn't comment but stated the vRod would be the only water cooled bike....which was a true statement.  The twin cooling isn't a complete water cooled motor plus the RK on this thread is still the old, reliable 110 (  :huepfenlol2: ).  He looked at my SG and made the statement "I'd keep that one if I were you".  Made me think at the time the new ones may not be "all that" and from what I can see, he was right.  Plus, sounds like the CVO SG may not come back.... :nixweiss:

I like the new bags/tour pac but want to see/operate them in person before making a final decision.  I personally like the "stock" look of the '14 CVO Road King.  Yes, they went backward in taking the stuff off they put on the '13 but the RK was never really promoted as a loaded touring bike.  Yes, you can tour on it (and quite a few of us do) but the MoCo had other models out there with more bells and whistles.  The Road King is and was always suppose to be a good, solid bare bones touring bike.  IMO, it meets that goal and now, with the new '14, it's back on the path it started.

Howard - I understand your point about the RK. Many seem to feel as you do about it. Some people seem to feel so strongly about the RK, it's as if some St. Davidson received a spiritual message from on high in 1994, revealing the borderline-divine purpose of the bike:

"Thou Shalt Have No Creature Comforts, nor Audio, nor Lowers, nor Any Feature That Seems Indulgent. Nothing Other Than A Windshield... For the Road King is Only for Riders Who Neither Desire nor Need These."

But where is it written that the RK was never intended to be anything but a stripped-down touring bike, without audio nor lowers, etc? Is it carved in stone somewhere in Milwaukee? Even the MoCo has long offered an add-on handlebar-mounted audio system for the RK!

A particular bike might have a heritage and a reputation, having traveled a certain path for a long time - but to me there is no reason why it can't evolve into something more over time. The first word in CVO is "Custom", and I really liked what they did with the '13 SERK. It had a lot of custom-looking stuff on it, as I think CVOs SHOULD have, in order to validate their sky-high prices as factory customs.

Maybe there's also a law that says "Thou Shalt Not Have a Sissy Passenger Backrest" for RKs too... because the '14 SERK doesn't even come with one of those, either!

The website says this about the '14 SERK... "For the rider who wants it all, the bike that has it all: classic style, long haul comfort. Heavy custom details."

The bike that has it ALL? Really? Long-haul comfort... with no back rests, no lowers, no audio, and that thin little stock seat? Hmmmm... I think they're pretty confused about what this bike is supposed to be themselves. I would think the messaging would be more along the lines of:

"The essence of the open road. Classic style and clean lines with custom details. Nothing to get in your way. Just the music of your engine."

That guy was right though... Keep Ginger!

:ROFLOL:  Maybe they cut and pasted the wrong text into the SERK page because they had to "rush more"...

Perhaps I am being overly critical of the new SERK, and expecting in to be something it's not. I just don't like it nearly as well as last year's stunner with all of its amenities and its beautiful paint.

I like CHROME front nacelles and cowbells. I was happy to see them finally replace the painted front fairing skirt and cowbells on the SESG and go to chrome up front. They should have done all chrome on the '14 SERK, too... But they apparently felt that paint on the front looks more "custom".

I could deal with all of this much better if they simply hadn't completely RUINED the taillights...  :soapbox:

Yep, those tail lights suck!  Ruins the whole clean look of the back.  The 09 back end on the SERG is what sold me on the bike.  Looks great on the SESG too and the 13 SERK.

They need to make this kit for the 2014's.

I am pissed that they make that kit AT ALL! If you want that CVO-style rear fascia, you should have to buy a friggin' CVO to get it!

this had become a standard for the cvo's . Excluding the ultras in touring
.. I just can not figure out why it was changed on the 14 cvork

Well, I guess that hen they added the audio kit on the 2013 RKcvo, they found out that (hey, people don't spend more money, so lets take it off on 2014 so we can get some cash out of their pockets). It's really sad when u add a nice feature on 13 models and take it off the following year. Not forgetting that if you guys want to add that saddlebag new speakers, u will need to wire a whole system like its previous 13 model,,,this is of course extra costs,,,,
Well done HD :nervous:

I regard the 2014 cvo road king as a fix of the 2013.  The 2014 road king appeals to me because I like the comfort of a touring bike without the extra weight of lowers amp, speakers etc.  If you want tunes, get bluetooth speakers for your helmet and crank up itunes or Pandora.

As I mentioned elsewhere.
I never wanted the Lowers, iPod or Speakers in the Saddlebags to begin with.
What I strongly dislike is a Blacked Out Bike. The Blacked Out look doesn't do it for me.

I guess HD now thinks all their buyers will fall in love with Black paint vs Chrome.

I picked the 13 Anniversary model because it had some black!  I have never ridden with the lowers & the speakers in the bags was not a selling feature.  So it seems they nailed the 14's from my point of view, but I'm not a fan of the new bags or this years paint, but the price is better!!

I may just be an outsider here as a non CVO owner, i do want to join the ranks officially in the future, but i sure liked the 2013 CVO RK. I liked the lowers, the saddlebag speakers and the look of the whole bike. I'm looking to get a 2009 non CVO RK soon and it will get a visual makeover with some of the features of a CVO and hopefully the sound system. I hope it will be a stepping stone to the real thing in the future, whether a CVO Road Glide, a CVO Street Glide or the 2013 CVO RK. I guess i'm just the fake it til you make it guy right now. I hope i don't offend you guys, lol.

I did look at that, thats a GREAT deal! Right now i have a deal working for an 09 RK thats almost an even $$$ swap for my 2000 RK if it goes thru. I have somebody gonna give me 12K for my 2000 then i'll get the 2009 for 13K. Anyway, i hope my next bike (after this 2009) is a CVO bike. I would like to see what the rear end of the 2014 RK looks like too in person. I really like the 2013 cvo rk.
 Sorry for the thread drift.

If you can do an almost even trade from a '00 RK to a '09 RG... DO IT! Take a hit on the RK if you have to. With the '09, you get the frame redesign, under-frame exhaust, and all of the other massive changes made that year... '09 was the biggest one-year modernization in Touring bike history. HUGE improvement in handling.

Good luck!

I liked the 2013 SERK's when they came out. I waited all year till the 2014's were out hoping for some additional improvements. I was less than impressed without all the Chrome. The sound system was a secondary item . I ended up getting a 2013 Blue RK. The sound system isn't all that great at highway speeds but is adequate around town.  I may add a detachable fairing to get that in your face stereo sound like the Glides have.
The softail CVO's his year seem to be the best looking in the CVO lineup. If I was younger I might have gotten one of those.

I love the new bags after seeing them in person, they open and close much easier, hold more stuff.  Their are already HD lids available for them with speakers.

I really dig the 14 CVO Road King on Orange/Black....probably my favorite CVO of all time. I am on the fence about trading my Streetglide. I just haven't bonded with the Batwing and this one is my 3rd. I also can't stand plastic lowers.  I think they made a lot of good changes on the 14...motor improvements, suspension, bags, painted nacelle and cowbells, and lighting. Dropping the stereo and lowers while lowering the price is just a bonus. I also like the blacked out cases on the motor way more than the granite cases. The blacked out covers give it a modern, up to date look. I think I have just about talked myself into one.

I have had mine 14  for 3 weeks and it is by far better than the 07 even with Bitubos and Traxion front end. Don't think  I will have to put any money in except seat and handle bars. Great bike. Just love the Tribal Orange and black. At first I was hesitant about the shiny black but after seeing it is person. They did a great job on the bike. O I did have to get the head light ring  powder coated Black to  match the aux head lights.  A little more paint and less chrome for the wife to clean.  And very happy I waited to 14 as the bags are great and never thought the Road king should have radio. The bat    wings have them  and the roadk ing is supposed to be a bare bones touring bike.     Billy
