Front brake noise
« on: September 22, 2010, 02:34:38 PM »

Had my 2010 SESG for about nine months. Since new, I get an occaisional "clunk" from what appears to be coming from the front brakes. Happens only intermittently, and just as the bike is almost to a complete stop. Some days never happens at all. Asked the dealer to check it out at the 1K service and they say it is normal, from the floating calipers or rotors.

Anybody else experience this?

Sounds like the steering head bearing is loose!

Yes I have the same sound. Took it to the dealer with the complant and they tighten the bearings to speck. Drove home  and had same sound. Now I can make it happen when sitting still and a hand full of brake rocking the bike. Back to dealer and was told this is comming from the floating brake on the street gluide. Get use to it is what i was told...... this dealer was 100 mile round trip next dealer is over a hundred mile one way.

A lot of these bikes make that floating caliper sound....there is a thread here talking about it.

Like many of those things that Harley calls "normal", it's only on some bikes and some parts.  To me that's not "normal", it's an indication of just how sloppy their designs and quality control are.  The floating rotors on my earlier model bikes never made a clunking sound, so it's not something that is inherent in all floating rotors.

I guess if someone wanted to make a point, or just satisfy their curious mind, they could substitute the plain rotors from a standard model without changing anything else and then see if the noise disappears.  Probably not worth the effort, however.  I think this is just one more of the many, many irritants that a Harley owner has to learn to live with as part of the privilege of owning one of Milwaukee's finest.  (Actually, I thought Milwaukee's finest came in a bottle or keg.)

My'09 will give a clunk only after backing. First time on the brakes after backing out of the garage or some such. After the the initial clunk it doesn't do it again. 'Tis normal.  ::)

I'm on my 3rd set of front brake rotors. The 1st and 2nd sets had a severe brake surge or pulse when stopping. The 3rd set stops nice and smooth but will make the clunk noise the 1st time I stop after backing up. Dealer said it is normal. I'd rather put up with the clunk than the brake surge. They said the original rotors did not dissipate heat quick enough and caused them to warp. Bike now has 18,500 miles on her and still stopping OK.

I don't think it's anything to worry about.  Mine also does it on occasion when backing out of the garage.  My 2000 Road King did the same thing.
