Title: 2018 Sticker Glide
Post by: rayson56 on September 20, 2017, 01:20:01 PM
Has anyone that has purchased or that is planning on purchasing the new 2018 CVO Street Glide thought about removing any of the decals/stickers from the paint scheme on the orange or gray with the black denim lower & accent trim?
I have ordered the Lava Orange w/ Black Denim and I'm contemplating removal of the stickers on the front of the fairing, top of the tank and rear fender and leaving the rest. I think that they cheapen the look of the bike (IMO) but I'm ok with the rest and really like the orange and black combo. It appears to me that the Denim Black on the bottom of the tank, lower fairings, ignition switch housing and the part under the fairing that covers the top of the fork tubes (can't remember what that piece is called) are painted and the rest of the denim is stickers.
If anyone has any first or even second hand information on this subject I would be interested in hearing from you.

Thanks,

I could be wrong of course, but if you're assuming the denim is just an applique stuck on top of the paint I think your assumption is wrong.  Either that or Harley has found a way to further cheapen the paint jobs you're paying thousands extra for on a CVO.  I wouldn't try peeling it.

Leave it to Harley to bring back a stupid and stupid looking bike show fad like flat paint.  Kind of reminds me how they brought out fat rear tires a decade after they had come and gone on the show circuit and on custom bikes.  They are always years behind the trends.  Now they've even jumped on the oversize front rim fad.  They still think "style" is an acceptable substitute for just making a high quality and reliable motorcycle.

also, contrary to popular belief, there is a clear coat on the denim paints.  so even if it were a sticker, it would still be covered by clear.

I believe Rayson 56 is right-----------I have seen the dark alloy and black denim up close and personal and I believe the black denim on the lower part of the saddle bags is somewhat like a decal/wrap type application. Don't remember about the front of the bike .

The black denim is not a sticker, decal or what ever.  It does feel like it might be.  However, the bike has to be painted, then clear coated.  That is then polish before the denim paint is applied, and the denim clear is applied.  This is why you feel it and leads people to believe it is a decal.  The actual paint process was explained at the dealer show.

Also if you talk to custom painters who have painted bikes that are both gloss paint and denim paint on the same panel, you will find the same ridge.

The reason there is an edge is because the denim is put on top of the main paint. It is definitely not a decal.

Thanks guys. I was hoping that at least those 3 parts were decals and if they were they were coming off. But if it is paint then I guess it's NOT so cheap.  :nixweiss:

I was at my local dealer today and I could have sworn it was a "wrap" type decal on the CVO SG.  My local HD sales guys are saying it is as well.  They may be wrong (wouldn't surprise me), but irregardless - IMHO it looks like crap and really makes the bike look cheap.

On the other hand I saw a Black Fade CVO Ultra.  Wow.... I'm a RG owner and boy if they had a CVO RG Ultra in that color, I'd be lining up for one of them!

According to my painter The badging and graphics on previous denim paints have been a type of silk screening process. They are not decals. I'm not sure on the new bikes but would guess they are the same process previously used on other denim bikes.

I'm sorry guys but I've been reading this thread and have a question to Ray.  Why would you want to do this or even attempt to do this on a $40K plus motorcycle?  I'm not trying to be smart here but why spend that kind of money for a paint scheme you don't like?  I don't like stickers or cheap stuck-on reflectors either but the paint should be something that draws you in to purchase and enjoy.  Spend it on a color you do like and ride on... ;D

A big part of the justification for the outlandish prices of CVO's has always been the "special" paint and graphics.  Why pay that premium and then change the paint and graphics?

And yes, the more I look at photo's of those bikes, especially the rear view of the bags, the more it looks like a cheap decal or wrap.  Whether it is or not, it still looks more like JC Whitney and not a classy paint job.

I spoke with customer service at HD and the answer that was given to me about the paint scheme, after 2 days of digging (she said) was that it IS a silk screening process. You and your painter seem to be right on the money HD Dude!
Thanks for all of your inputs and opinions folks.

It looks like I've got a decision to make. I'm super ready for an upgrade and love almost everything about the new SG. I've been watching with great anticipation to see the offerings from the MOCO for the last few years. I also have an offer on my current bike that I definitely should not pass on. A fairly  local dealer is offering me a very good deal (especially compared to the other dealers) on a new CVO in my color choice.
Decisions, Decisions!  A wise man once wrote "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice".  Neal Peart I believe. lol

Hmmm. Damn glad I took the leap on a 2017 CVO SG.  I like conservative bikes, so the dark slate bike of 2017 fits my needs well.  Oh I did change derby covers and have a 117 derby on my CVO.  Think I will do the 2018 dark horn cover as well.  I just made a 2017.5!!  And the bike runs really well with the stage 4 kit fitted with a stage 3 cam.  Guess I did it my way.....  Just another side thought rattling around in my noggin, if HD had its crap together they would make the CVO line a menu type build, kind of like options on any other vehicle.  You want this paint...ok it costs this much more.  You want the 117 stage 4 from the factory...ok check this box.  You don't want a 10000000 watt stereo...ok...check this box.  Then it would truly be a Custom Vehicle Operation...  Until that happens, which will be never, I will do what makes my bike, my bike.

Just saw the '18 Orange CVO Street Glide this weekend.  IMO, the paint scheme in no way meets the complexity of previous years.  The orange metallic looked fine, but the flat black (and the orange stripe) looked like a wrap or tape.  There's a ridge between the flat black and orange that gives this impression.  That ridge will be a great wax catcher.  Basically, HD has saved a lot of money here - a simple orange and black paint scheme that's not expensive to produce, but the price of the bike goes up, adding to MoCo profibility.

What happened to the hand pin sripping, gold leaf, etc. paint jobs of previous years?

The First Mistake Harley made with the paint was when they stopped painting the frames on the CVO bikes, that was one of the best things about the CVO bikes a Big stand out from the rest of the bikes with just the black frame.

Funny how it works, new regimes take over top management, and the first thing both of them do is cheapen the product even more AND raise prices.  And then people sit around and wonder why sales are down and many dealerships look like ghost town storefronts most days of the week.  I swear every time I drive by the local dealership, even on weekends, there are few if any cars and bikes in the parking lot.  Take away the vehicles of the employees and you'd be hard pressed to tell they were open.

Stickers? or Paint? Only one way to find out for sure.  My 3 week old 18 Street Glide was damaged during the recent wind storm, resulting in some deep scratches in the denim surface on the lower saddle bag.  I dropped the bag off at the HD Dealer to be repaired, and just got word yesterday that the painter could not fix the "vinyl decal" on the bag.  The Dealer and Insurance Adjuster concurred and have ordered a new bag (lower half) from Harley.
Once they have the new bag installed I'm going to take a razor blade to the underside of the old bag and find out for sure whether its a sticker or paint.

Update coming soon.

Everyone has opinions, based upon the looks of the new CVO paint jobs, but, I don't think many of you know much about the whole processes that are involved with these paint schemes. Thinking it was a wrap...lol. Ho Kayyyyy. They are absolutely correct in the silk screened logos and this isn't a simple process either. The gloss clear butting up against the matte clear....that in no way is a CHEAP way to do things, there was no move by HD Mo Co to use that as a cost cutting motive, actually the opposite. It would be MUCH cheaper to have gloss cleared the whole bike, it's far more difficult to have a matte/gloss finish on the same bike. Matte paint jobs can't be color sanded and polished so NO screw ups can be present. They have to be PERFECT. The gloss side has to be finished AND polished then masked to the exact edge THEN the matte clear shot. The labor required is substantial. HD worked hard to minimize the paint edge/mil thickness for the clear coats, to make them match up. If you folks that think it looks cheap, you could always blow the bike apart and shoot gloss clear over the entire bike, creating your own one of a kind paint job..... 8)

I'm a painter and appreciate what goes into these paint jobs. I like them but i will say that the CVO street glide in the metal flake silver/mercury with the flames is my present fav paint job but thats because i dig metalflake paint... :coolblue:

I never even thought I'd buy a CVO until I saw the Hard Candy Mercury & Smoky Quartz flames!  That was an expensive revelation. I think some metalflake does suit the Street Glide, and the Mercury paint is spectacular - only thing could improve it would be a skull motif on the batwing.

Having said that I do like the gunship gray Road Glide & Street Glide, even though you can find almost the same shade on various cars (I think I've seen Audi, Seat, VW, Skoda, Honda, Range Rover, Mini, Porsche).  Nice but not as special as the paint on my bike. (just my personal and very subjective opinion).
