The Amazing Path
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:31:42 AM »

THESE PICTURES FASCINATED ME SO I HAD TO FIND OUT MORE. TOOK ME A WHILE BUT I FOUND IT ON THE WEB.
This is the South Peak of Hua Shan Mountain. It is a sacred Taoist mountain and trekked mostly by youth and occasionally monks and pilgrims (how does a monk do it in his robes???). It is the most dangerous mountain in China for climbers. To fall is certain death so these routes have been given humorous, but quite accurate names such as 'Thousand Feet Precipice' and 'Ear Touching Cliff'.

1st - Lets take the tram up to the start of the trail.

Now follow the path.

Be sure to hold on to the railing.

Keep an eye on the person in front of you.

Be very careful when passing someone going in the opposite direction.

Now just up a few steps. (They are on the left in the picture)

Gets a little steeper here - so put your toes in the holes.

A few more steps to go.

Finally in sight.

The view's great, BUT - Would you dare try it?
(And they probably don't even have tea at the top)

For a less dangerous climb, this is the route up the North Peak. It's a 5-6 hour hike up 2,300 metres with 6,600 steps at an incline of about 75 degrees. But it is climbed by grandmas and children alike.

Interesting tidbit: The first wisdom of Tao is "small steps" - definitely applicable in this case!

There are pack men who's job is to carry supplies up the mountain, using sticks like they did thousands of years ago. Some do not even hold the railing or pay attention, having done it for 30 years. They all have huge calves.

I saw a news article that was talking about a bridge in Europe (maybe Paris?) where it has become a fad to put an engraved padlock on a tourist spot to prove you visited and to show love for a loved one or good wishes etc.

I bet this spot on top of the mountain is where H-D keeps the next year's  motorcycle lineup info!
