Riding with injuries or disabilities??
« on: November 02, 2004, 10:57:05 PM »

Reading somewhere else, about back problems that somebody has got me to wondering........how many of us are riding with injuries, old or new?

You guys have all read enough on my accident in May....metal plate in my jaw, in my left upper arm and lower left leg and metal rods all through my pelvis.

But back in 1987 I had back surgery and had two discs removed.  I've had back problems every since.....off and on.

Back in 1977 I had my spleen removed after being shot and stabbed.  That was back when I was doing dirty deeds dirt cheap and livin a different kind of life style.

Living with a herniated disc from a bike accident May 08,2003 has changed quite a few things.  Constant migraine type of headache, numbness in both arms and hands, and a restriction of lifting nothing more than 10 lbs. has changed the routine but not the enjoyment for me.

Got an entire regimen from the doctors.  Doctors are looking at surgery, still.

See if you can believe this one and IT'S TRUE...I have a friend who has been riding for 35+ years and experienced the following.

As he was turning a corner in the mountains of TN, a COW got loose due to a gate being open and crossed the road.  Since he was riding at 45mph and turning the curve where the cow was, he hit the rear quarter of the cow and when into the ditch.  The cow was fine, however the rider suffered injuries.  After four months, he will be taking his first ride since the event after Thanksgiving.

Bottom Line - To hell with cars, watch out for those COWS!  They do not move as quickly and have a mind of their own.

There's more of you guys hobbling around from injuries and disabilities than just two or three of us..........come on MFG and Dallas and all you others holding out,  tell us about your situations.

By the way, I hope both of you guys are doing progressively better.

Ok,
Back in my fun days, I had a few broken bones from riding.
Left leg broken twice. After about hour or two of riding I have a slight problem get off
the bike from the left side... cant seam to get the leg over the seat... No problem just get off from the right side.
left and right wrist broken
Left and right shoulder dislocated.
Not sure of how many concussions.
fingers all both hands and right thumb.
I did a little bit of pro racing in my hay days in the dirt.
Life Threating NO Way
Let's not talk about my pride.
Damn Kids Anyways.

It was fun up until some young stud makes pass on you over a jump and he is 10 feet over my head.
I was 30 years old at the time.
I knew it was time to quit and I did that same heat.
I packed up the van and told my wife at the time I am done. I have not been on a dirt bike after that.
Stopped riding after that for a few years.
So now I start my day with pill or two.
That's it.

I'll be down for about 6 weeks minimum but hopefully will still get to do some riding this summer.

Sorry to hear about the down time and the upcoming surgery Dude.  Perhaps if you explain to he surgeon and physical therapist that you have "special needs" they'll fashion you an upper body cast that will support the shoulder and point your hand toward the handlebar?

JC, this is completely off of any bike related topic.  But I just thought of something.  With all the hardware how the hell do you get through an airport?

I was  diagnosed  with viral optic neuritis about 2 yrs ago in my left eye.The doctor said
it was highly unlikely it would spread to the other eye. i asked how I could catch something like that  and he said that some people are  suseptable to certain viruses and others arent. Welp after about 1 1/2 years  of being basically blind in my left eye  i  had got used to it and decided to get my bike...my right eye was perfect 20/20
Then two weeks after i got my bike i contracted  it in my right eye also. My doctor immeadiatly put me on a regiment of solu medrol (optic steroids) and  I actually got some of my vision back in my left eye.but my right eye deteriorated bad ..i feel like im lookin through a straw and what i see is blurry at that. my visual field is horrible but slowly improving.i now have glasses  to help with the vision i have left..I'm just glad i wasnt diagnosed with multiple scorosis or diabetes here is a link to best describe  what i see  http://www.mult-sclerosis.org/opticneuritis.html

Cannibus, I too have Optic Neuritis (along w/ Glaucoma and recently diagnosed Cataracs).  I also have trouble w/ vision riding, esp. at night.  The glare from any other lights is terrible, also dealing w/ rain is difficult.  My vision doesn't seem to have deteriorated as much as yours though.  My Doc didn't say it was virus caused, are there other types?  I also notice that my general condition such as being well rested vs. tired has a drastic effect on how well I see at any given time.  This is limiting my hours in the saddle on trips now.  That and daylight.  I'm interested in hearing how you progress, so keep us informed.  Hope to meet you in the Valley if you attend.   spyder
