Anyone using iPhone G3 for GPS on your bike?
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:41:07 PM »

Is anyone out there using the new iPhone G3 w/GPS on their scoot? I was thinking today of upgrading my version 1 unit because the G3 GPS system looks pretty capable, has bluetooth, plays tunes, makes and receives calls and can also play movies (when I'm not riding).

Just wondering if there were any other early adopters like me out there.

I do.  I tie my iPhone 3G to my Zumo and it works like a charm.

So, I assume you are using the iPhone as a phone and the Zumo as the GPS?? Have you tried using the iPhone GPS section? Is it readable on your bike?

Nope.  Just pair it with the ZUMO to see who is calling.

Ditto.  iPhone for calls, Zumo for GPS.

I have been thinking of trying to use my Blackberry GPS on the bike.  I am wondering if it would work if I plugged into the headphone jack on the phone, and instead of plugging in headphones, had a wire that on the other end plugged into the aux input jack on the stereo.  Anyone know if that would work?  How about cutting in on the stereo for turn by turn directions?  I haven't really tried the GPS that comes with the stereo, but I don't think I'm going to like it nearly as much as the Verizon GPS on my phone.  I had thought that I could get a handlebar mount and put it on the left side of the bars, and then plug into the lighter to keep it charged.  Anything wrong with my reasoning.  Then, of course, I could use the phone as a music player as well.

Only thing I can see that will not work is once you plug your Blackberry (if indeed that will work) you have to select "Aux" on your stereo. While in that position the only audio you will hear is what is coming from the accessory plugged into the Aux. port. If the accessory you have plugged into that port has the ability to play music and allow the GPS directions to override (like the Zumo does while playing music) then what you are describing will work.

Thanks Fired00d.  I was just about to head out to Radio Shack and see if they have the wire I would need.  I thought about exactly what you said.  If I can get it to play through the stereo,  I just need to go get a large capacity card for my phone and load all of my music onto the card.  I already know the phone will allow cut in for the GPS turn by turn.  I see no reason to worry about the display size, as the turn by turn is all I really need.  In the car, I just put my phone in the console and listen to the turn by turn and I don't usually look at the display.  I think I can get up to 8GB for a card for my phone.  That's a lot of music.  I can put my entire CD collection on 1 card.

If this works, then I just need to find a handlebar mount that will hold my phone securely and also not block the holes for the headphone jack or charger.

You may want to take a look at this thread - iPod Mount - Group Buy. Might find something there that would work. :nixweiss:

One other potential (and real) issue is weather.  The Zumo is designed to survive riding through the rain.  The handlebar mounted phone is not.  May not be a tremendous obstacle for regular local riding.  But trips always catch some weather.

I guess that's when I put the phone in my pocket and hook up the headphones, or learn to use the GPS that comes on my bike.  If it's raining, I don't think I am going to veer off course and then I could use the built in GPS.

Always a good thing to be prepared and have a backup.
