HD handlebar mounted MP3 player questions
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:41:57 AM »

I know, these have been obsolete for awhile now.  Have a chance to grab a new one though.

To those that have had them in service for awhile how have they held up?

Also, has anyone mounted on on a Wild1 "Chubby" (1 1/4") handlebar?

Thanks

I have had mine since the bike was practially new. No problems at all and yes they will work with the 575's. You do need to do some magic with the dremel to make it fit though.

Be sure you switch the A-B switch to the A position or the output will be much lower than the radio or CD. I even added a low level line driver to bring the signal up a bit more as even in the A position it was a bit lower signal level.

Thanks Jim.  A little Dremel work is ok.  Had to do that with the Heat Demons switch clamp on both bikes already.  The Road Glide has the tapered bars where the SEEG has W1's older style bars with the immediate transition.  Was thinking of hanging this on the Road Glide as an alternative to the tape deck in the dash.  Just didn't have a clue about how they'd held up in service.

Just thought of another question.  Aside from the data cable going to the aux in jack can the rest go inside the bars?  If not is the exposed +/- harness at least moderately unobtrusive?

I ran all (audio & power) cables in the bars you will need an added hole in the bars behind the MP3 unit to do so. Doing the aux jack mod to the rear of the radio eliminates any exposed wiring fo it.

Thanks again Jim.  Now just have to decide if I want to do this and keep the tape deck or stick a Sony in it over the winter.

Ground out the mount to fit the bars, don't worry about moisture getting into the unit.  Had mine on for about 3 years in our rainy weather and have had no issues at all.

Thanks Dave.  If anyone's would be more likely to have problem would likely be one that's lived that long in your weather.

I've got one on an 05 I bought and the signal is lower than CD or radio. Could you tell me where the A-B switch is? I assume we're all talking about the Road Tech?

Thanks

The switch is inside the unit. you need to remove it from the mount to access it. Sorry I do not have a better description than that but it been a few years since I installed one.

Hey Don did you get the MP3 and install it? If not I have one in the storage room somewhere in the jungle of take off parts that I took off after I did the Sony radio switch. If you want it, let me know and I dig it up and send it to you.

No MJ I didn't score before.  Thought I had one lined up.  Had been told I did.  But the guy who had it had second thoughts.  Appreciate you thinking of me.  Thanks very much.  Will send a PM next thing.

If I remember correctly, the A-B switch had something covering it...like a rubber gasket or something to lift up to see the switch.  There isn't much chance of not finding it once you take the 2 pieces apart.  It makes a big difference in the volume level.

To answer the original question, it worked quite well with no problems.  Make sure that you snap the cover in place where the SD card goes in until you hear it click.  It's no big deal unless you run into weather or you are washing the bike.  You want to make sure you keep the water out and with the cap closed, I could suds it up and hose it off without worry.
