I bought a screw you can install by hand without the frustrating little special screwdriver.  One of the Zumo sites had a member who offered them for sale.  Seems like it came from overseas.

d00d probably knows all the particulars...  Zumo is his middle name....

Hogbreath hooked me up with a thumbscrew for my ZUMO.  Sent it to me in an envelope labeled "SCREW HENRY"   :huepfenlol2: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenlol2:

I like the tool which comes with the Zumo. It gives you added security when you leave it on your bike for lunch breaks or whatever. I carry the tool on my bike key chain. I did have problems with the tool separating in my pocket but solved that by applying red lock tight and letting it dry on the threads before joining the two together. The lock tight adds enough friction to keep the pieces together while allowing you to unscrew easily. Just my preference.  :confused5:

I have this on my Zumo 550. Works a treat and I always adopt the policy that if I leave the bike and can't see it, then the Zumo comes with me. I work on the basis that some chithead might just have one of those security keys as well  >:(

The security screw got in my way.  Since one can steal the mount and get the Zumo anyway, I just unscrewed it with a pair of pliers and discarded it.

I do the same. :2vrolijk_21: The included "security screw" is not an anti-theft screw it is only a "security screw" in the sense that it should prevent the latch from opening if you hit a bump or something that might jar latch loose. If the bike is out of my sight then the Zumo will be taken off as well.

As dood says in reply 16 - this screw is mainly there to prevent the Zumo jumping out of it's cradle if you hit a bad bump or somesuch. The replacement screw just makes life much easier to secure it/unsecure it.

I did the latch, but there are a few other options here. The latch is easy to fab and works great!

Lowest cost option:

Take the Security Screw (for comparison) to a good hardware store with a very good nut & bolt selection.  Find an M2 screw 20 mm long with a standard head, add a couple of nuts (screwed up to the head of the screw, to the top).  Then cut a small rubber hose section to fit over the top to turn it more easily & you have a Security Screw that is easily removable for less than $2.

Not a good idea to ride without a security screw in place - Zumo could fall off.

Never happened to me.........but.......

I remember some pictures on the Zumo forum aboput a year ago (d00D would know most likely) that showed a Zumo that had fallen off a moving bike.  It was a mess.

The screw locks the top lid down.  Without the screw in place, if you hit a big bump while riding, it could knock it off.  Another possible problem is while reaching around the Zumo a hand (especially with gloves) could accidentally bump the top lid up & then the Zumo would fall out of it's mount.    Either situation is not a good one.  The screw prevents both.

My 1 1/2 cents (deflation).

It certainly happens to Tom Tom's, but I don't know of anyone that has lost a Zumo - yet!

REALLY?

Has that happened to you?
Or someone you know?
I have taken the screw out and never had a problem, , , , yet?

Do you have insurance on your motorcycle/car/truck/life.  The screw is cheap compared to buying a new one.  Kind of like a lot of things in life.  Better to have and not need vs need and not have.

I didn't like the screw that came with it.(Actually I lost it) and when in Myrtle Beach went to a model airplane store and picked up 6 small scres for $5.00 then a mini screwdriver to go with it. The screwdriver locks in the screwhead so it doesn't drop out.As others have posted the Zumo comes with me when bike isn't in site. THE MUFFMAN
