Is it illegal to have red turn signals in your state?
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:33:01 PM »

I just put the run/brake/turn module on my CVO and was wondering which states have a problem with the red lights in the turn signals?
As of right now I still have the amber bulbs in.

I don't think any state would have an issue with the rear lights.  But, for sure you can not run red fronts.......

Unless some states have recently changed their laws, I don't believe they are illegal in any state.  Red turn signals used to be the norm on American cars and trucks, and I believe a few still have red turn signals on the rear.

Red signals are legal in all states that I know of, but amber brake lights are not.

That's a Federal DOT law. No red visible from the front of any vehicle.

Duh,  we are talking about rear lights only.

Duh, the subject line reads: "Re: Is it illegal to have red turn signals in your state?" ALL HD motorcycles have turn signals fore and aft.

Only a real gomer would put Red lights in the front turn signals.

I believe this is the only problem you'll have.  The amber turns should be ok but amber brake lights are not.  I changed mine to red for just that reason.  Had smoked lenses and prefered them but the law didn't prefer them for brake lights.

Things like brake lights and turn signals fall under Federal Department of Transportation rules, so you don't need to worry about what one state may prefer.  Federal law and rules trump the local yokels in these cases.  However, if you decide to ride in other countries you will need to check their requirements.

As noted earlier, red turn signals in the rear are perfectly fine in the USA, but the fronts cannot be red.  If you haven't removed the side reflectors on your bike yet, you will notice that the amber front, red rear theme is used there as well.  That's to help determine which way you're supposed to be driving (Red = Rear).  If you find the red end entering the intersection first, you either got on the bike from the wrong side, or you applied too much brake on that slick spot.

I could be completely wrong but I believe Harley does not offer rear red turnsignal lens for the light bars that our SE bikes come with but do have red turnsignal lens for the light bars that come on regular Ultras, Road Kings, and Heritages.

I believe the reason for this is that our SE light bars our too narrow and not spaced far enough from the taillight to be "legal" with red turnsignal lens.

In saying that, I have the Kuryakyn LED red rear turn/brake lights used with their controller for run/stop/turn for the extra lighting in the rear.

Hope this helps and not confuses the matter.

I use hand signals for the most part, but interesting thread. Like. . . who really cares. Just ride!  :2vrolijk_21:
