1156 red bulbs
« on: January 01, 2009, 01:33:27 AM »

Before I buy any recommendations on replacement bulbs for the rear turn signals.  I need red!

Open to all suggestions...LED or standard?  I could  go with the red lens covers and clear bulbs but I would like to keep the smoke lens covers.

If someone from this site sells them let me know, I have found them on ebay and Kuryakyn sells them.

Thanks

If you go with the LED be careful before you buy! On your bike, the Kuryakyn lights will not work. The bullet style housing requires a different bulb. There is one that will work as I have them installed on mine. I will have to check later in the day to see who makes it. I've got the red LED bulb that just fits into the socket and am using the original smoked lens.

Maybe I can talk you into a picture.  I am a little curious how the LED's look under the smoke lens.

Consider it done. Just give me a few hours to sleep.  :D.  I can tell you that the "rim" around the LED's is the part that will not fit into the housing. When you go to push it in, the top part of the light will hit and the two tabs on the 1156 will not be able to align up. I'll shoot some pix.

A few years ago, I happened upon some red bulbs at the Advance Auto store in Enterprise, AL.  I bought every last package they had.  Manager said he'd special ordered them for a customer without upfront payment.  Customer never showed up to claim them, so he shelved them.  I was more than happy to take them off his hands.  You might try looking at your local store.  I've had some pretty good luck finding hard to find items at Advance.

Ok, here's the deal... The bulbs that I have are marked "60929". I have searched the internet but can't seem to find them anywhere. I purchased these from my local HD dealer. Here are some pictures but that's about the best I can do for you.

Here you can see how the white "rim" will hit if it not the right bulb:

I personally prefer the old fashioned bulbs over many of the LED alternatives.  If you decide to go with the conventional bulbs, look for ones made with red glass, not just a red coating that tends to peel.

I'm with ya on that one, Jerry.  Then there's that whole "load equalizer" thing.  Sure...LEDs look great, but for simplicity's sake, I prefer red bulbs.

Henry, the ones that I am using do not require a load equalizer (at least I'm not using one). I don't know why but they are true plug n play.

Thanks hard10 for the pictures.
I will check at the dealer to see if they have them.
If they don't I will go with the regular bulbs in red from ebay.
Thanks

I originally went with the 1156 red bulbs under my smoked lens along with the Kuryakyn tail light/brake light connection, but guys riding behind me said they couldn't tell when I used a turning signal and they didn't think I helped myself by having red tail lights that were distracting from the brake light. So, I changed to the Kuryakyn LED lens. Much better.

I used orange chromium bulbs with smoked lens on the front   ...    blocked the "run" connector with tape   ...
only lights up for turn signal ( orange )   ...   the rest of the time it is unlit but chrome behind smoke   ...
looks like a small spot light

don't know if this would work on the back or not

                                                                              thx

These look like what I have been looking for.  If your offer of a picture is still good I would like to see that.  I guess they would have the necessary load equalizer to go with those LED's.  I already installed the Kuryakyn run/turn/brake controller and can get a load equalizer that just plugs into that harness.
Have you had any issues with useing the LED's?

Thanks

I was going to try and warn you about that. Have you ever ridden behind someone who has had one of these installed? I have ridden behind two of our members here at various GTG's. It is VERY difficult to see when the brake is applied because the light is so bright when in the running position. I had the HD module installed and removed it. This is one aftermarket lighting add on that I would not recommend.

I am most likely going to make it a turn/brake module and remove the run feature.

Custom dynamics 48 bulb led repalcements are great. No load eqalizer if you only do the back. they also have a replacement for the Tombstone tail light . Billy
