Noisy cam
« on: May 09, 2019, 10:29:35 PM »

Cam went flat on my 13' cvo 110ci road king. Had it replaced, have put 800 miles on it. My buddy was just over w his 07 96ci road king & we noticed how quiet his cam sounds. Mine seems to have a lot of RATTLING noise. Clattering as well. Not sure if I should be alarmed? Bike performs well, i'm now concerned the cam could be going out again?? Suggestions or input??

When I had a rattling sound on my 110 I ended up with a whole new engine as my lifters came apart. I suggest having it checked right away. Not good since it’s time to ride.

what cause the cam to go flat?  a lot of failed lifters in other 110" right around your mileage.  Did you replace lifters?  What about cam bearings?  Did the flush the engine as the metal from the camshaft went somewhere.

Different cams in the two bikes.
His cam is the 07-13 touring cam, 198°/222° duration, .525"/525" lift with very gentle ramps. Single wound beehive springs in the heads, with moderate pressure, so mostly quiet.
The CVO/SE255 cam that comes stock in the CVO 110" bikes is a 211°/235° duration .550"/.556" lift with more aggressive ramps. Double wound springs with more pressure, so more sound is transmitted.
As long as the lifters & inner cam bearings are good, might try rocker lockers to make sure the rocker arm shafts aren't moving/hitting the retaining bolts

Local HD dealer did all the work, under warranty.
They tell me they replaced cam, lifters, bears, oil pump, oil pan, flushed system,  etc.
I have a really good local guy who is very knowledgeable,  hes going to take a listen.
The information you gave me is GREATLY  appreciated, it gives me some peace of mind !
Thanks a lot!

Stock push rods?  Or were adjustable push rods installed?  (push rods are not on your list).  Do you know what lifters and oil pump were installed?  Stock?

The lifters are the dead end trap for debris.  There are areas that get left untouched and when the repaired engine is fired the lifters pick up debris and can no longer seal and maintain zero lash. Many times a lifter or cam bearing failure requires a complete out of frame overhaul. This includes the cleaning you mentioned and more including the oil cooler and lines.

Based on the work order I suspect there are still issues. You can work those back at them, warranty on service, or engage a competent local shop. I can help you with local independent shops that are good in the area.
