-Looking for ideas on a new headlight set up
« on: July 29, 2016, 03:51:47 PM »

Hi all,
Looking for ideas on a new headlight...or, should we just change out the bulbs?
On our 2011 CVO RGU the light output is weak and the color is yellow

I've done a bit of research and obviously there's a ton of options out there so wanted to post here and get some real world feedback

Please chime in, what have you done that's made an impact/difference in increasing the lights for the headlights?
Again, new bulbs?  New headlight assemblies?

Thanks in advance

I did a fair amount of research on this a month ago. My son wanted to upgrade his stock 2008 cvo rk lights. He ordered, and I installed a Custom Dynamics TruBeam headlight assembly with the Custom Dynamics passing lamps and Bullet Ringz turn signals, and a Badlands load equalizer/run/brake/turn module. It was costly but he loves it. It was a huge improvement over halogen OEM lights.

I tried installing higher wattage bulbs, but wasn't happy.  Then I tried a Phase 7 led.  Great for flat land, but I ride the twisties and sometimes at night. Didn't like the dark corners caused by the flat pattern of the Phase 7.

Recently I went to a new LED made by Cryon, part # ABH4K-A6K.  If you have the CVO double bulb halogen set up, you will need to find a cheap take off single bayonet style lamp housing.  I found one used for $10 at a bike shop.  The Cyron bulb is BRIGHT. 6000k.  Very white light and has a large circular pattern.  No too impressed with the high beam side as the standard light is so bright you may never use the high beam.   Once you install this however, you'll want to upgrade spots if you have them as they will look terrible compared to this bulb.   Do a search and you'll find it available on numerous sites.  The bulb does come with a cooling fan which you'll only notice when you turn on the ignition before starting the bike, and after shutdown before turning off the ignition.   I'm sold.  :cucumber: :cucumber:

Harley Daymakers are a huge improvement but plenty pricey. I was running PIAA bulbs in my '11 SERGU like yours until I traded it. Much better than stock and a lot cheaper than other options. Someone on one of the RG Facebook pages posted about some other LED setup they recently installed on their RG for under $200. I'm pretty sure I've seen your name in one or two of the groups I'm in so you make want to nose around there. Guy found them on ebay.

For any upgrades on lights. If the manufacturers can not express the "strength" of their lights in candela or lumens don't buy it. It means it's a toy and for looks only. (Lots of HD riders are happy with that)

Would you buy a new cam if they did not state the specs on it?  Most will not but they happily buy a light because it looks the part.

I really like the SoCal Moto HID lights in the '05. Bright white and a better beam pattern (in the twisties) than the DMs.

A quick ebay search turns up lots of options. I just don't remember the name of the seller of the one that guy on FB was talking about.

Could be a buyer beware type of thing as these are just hitting the market and haven't really been proven yet. You can find the HD ones at dealer's online with a 20% discount but even then they're still more than double what you can get any of these for.

I've not tried these personally, but passing them on as I don't think they've been mentioned here yet.

Looks like the same as the Cyron I'm using.  Likely packaged differently.

I wondered if that might be the case...

I just purchased Eagle Lights 8700 7" Round Chrome Harley Daymaker LED Headlight and passing lamps. A lot less expensive tham HD. I'll post when I get and install them.

Talk to Dave Peloquin at www.twistedthrottle.com 855-255-5550.
Super nice guy, great shop and he has something way more powerful than the DayMaker and for less money.

Well, I installed the headlight and passing lamps. I did not have the correct adapter for the headlight so I had to unplug part of the harness. Boy what a difference, now I can see for about 3 miles ahead (at least that's what it seems). Unfortunately, the garage door opener function stopped working. I called EagleLites and spoke to Keith and explained the problem. He sent me the correct adapter the next day and now all is well. Great product from a company with absolutely fantastic customer support.
