HELP NEEDED!! 2013 cvo intermittently running on 1 cylinder
« on: October 23, 2019, 11:11:32 AM »

2013 cvo 110 driving me nuts

Runs like a raped ape

Then

Starts running on 1 cylinder

Usually idle to 2500 rpm

Cuts out occassionally 2500 to 5500rpm

Recently went from 90+ degree temps to 50deg temps

Bought bike recently

Dont know history

Has powercommander v I suspect has had cams changed

Needs tune in near future average highway fuel mileage 32mpg, pathetic, bike does not lug even at 1500 rpm in 6th gear, 1500 rpm to 6200 rpm smooth fast awesome

Except when it runs on 1 cylinder

Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this myself???

Changed spark plugs
Checked wires
Checked fuel
Added Lucas fuel treatment in case it was injector problem
Added heat just in case

Any suggestions appreciated

200 miles from home in Birmingham

Have limited tools

Troubleshooting in friends apartment parking lot

Have you checked to see if the EITMS setting?  You can turn it on or off.  Controls the bikes idle to run on one cylinder so it doesnt overheat.  I forget exactly how to check it...google or owners manual if you have available.

Does firms ever mess up?

I thought twisting the throttle killed eitms?

Excellent point!

Will turn it off!

Thanks

It should and only comes on at idle, not during the ride like your bike seems to be doing.  Yes, it may be the EITMS that's causing the issues in that it's not working correctly.  Turning it off isn't as simple on your '13 as it is on the later bikes with the infotainment system but still, that's what I would try to at least get you home.  If that doesn't and based on all the other things you've tried so far, I'm stumped...

Check for codes.  Wiggle injector wires and see if you can induce the problem.

Not sure about the PC V, but I had a PC III I believe on my '08 CVO SERK and it acted like yours and finally within a few minutes died altogether.  I was stranded.

I was able to remove my seat and unplug the PC and my bike ran great, albeit not with a tune.

Can the PC V be unplugged or does it work more like a TTS and remap the ECM?

If it can be removed for a short period of time, I would try that and see if the issues of the one cylinder running goes away.

Just a thought.

In addition to the above you should dump the Power Commander V for a flash tuner like the TTS. The PCV is an add on piggy back device that eliminates important features of the Delphi ECM like the O2 sensors. I have seen several of these cause issues over the years.

Also just because it feels "ok" to run the engine at 1500 rpm in 6th gear doesn't mean that its good for it. Your are severely lugging the engine!

Lol

Dont really goto 1500 rpm on purpose

However living in Georgia mountains

Seeing the dragon and copperhead trail both in first 6 weeks owning the bike a well as being in atl or Birmingham DAILY

Sometimes you end up lower rpm than intended!!!

Nice that bike is smooth that low!!!

I have had 255s and 408 and 400 cams smooth at 1500

Lugging is all about the motor balance,  tune and cam specs

Not really trying to start a lugging thread

But in 400k miles on 2 wheels, 1 million miles on 18 to 36 wheels and 3 million miles on 4 wheels over 37 years of driving

I have known my share of lugging

Lol

Btw PC v still uses o2 sensors

You can add wide bands and auto tune to PC V as well as have a switch for 2 different tunes! 87 octane and 93 octane, power tune and fuel mileage tune..

Remove PC V is my bet. The one I had a few years ago went onto one, then stopped. Took off PC V it was ok. Do not delay having a retune with something else if anything has been changed from stock, exhausts etc. I just had one after a few years and it's now a different bike.

It's very easy to just disconnect the PC-V and connect the stock harness directly to the ECM, and that has always been the best first suggestion for diagnosing engine performance issues.  If bypassing the PC-V eliminates the problem, you've saved a lot of time performing individual diagnostics tests.  Be aware that moisture getting into the connectors has been a problem on bikes running PCIII's and PC-V's, so check the condition of the terminals in all connectors.

Access and read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) and write them down.  The instructions for accessing the codes can be found on this site as well as others.

Thanks you all for the input!

Final diagnosis:

O2 sensors both unplugged!   IR Cameras installed over parking space now

Moco harness bad pin

PC V squished by seat. Relocated under driver backrest mount and secured with zip ties

Damn weird...
