I have had two local places recommend Comp cams lifters 850-4 saying they are good and American made.

Are they a good lifter? Compared to other aftermarket lifters like S&S?

I used them in a couple of my twin cams.  They are just 850's, the -# like -4 or -12 are how many come in the package.
Amazon has them for $58 for the -4 set.

I've used S&S standards and premium, Johnson HyLift, and generic Autozone all with good success -meaning I've never had a lifter fail.
My decision was always based on how soon will I replace them again as preventative maintenance, about every 25k miles, so the S&S premiums get a little expensive doing it that way.
With WFO Larry's reputation he uses the HyLift, so you can't go wrong there.  I recon the S&S Premium are also top of the line.

850's are good. I ran a set in my 10 rg for 30k miles. And  I have a new set waiting to put in my 10 rk. Several of my friends are running them. No issues.

Good to know. The guys I spoke to have been in the business for years one is a tuner and the other a shop owner and teacher of motorcycle mechanics course up here at s college.
They say they have never had s failure either them and that they are American made.
I had another guy on another forum say they are for cars not made for motorcycles and pointed me to a  S&S video that says don't use automotive lifters in a motorcycle.
Hard to know what is correct with all the difference views..

I agree with it.  That oil flow across the heads also removes heat.  The Harley "B" lifters are identical to the GM lifters except for the pushrod cups

To keep in mind hydraulic lifters are only as good as the oil supplied too them also how clean the oil is along with how well the viscosity of the oil is. If the oil is over heated the viscosity of the oil can break down and can damage the lifters (along with other engine components).
As for who makes the best I think it's of personal preference all the brand makers give the same speech on their products durability and performance.
Automotive engine lifters being used if the port for the lifter are within specification they work the same it's the rollers that's the main concern on a lifter.
The needle rollers that the lifter roller rides on can be the week link of a lifter.  Back in the day didn't have rollers on lifters and  weren't a big concern.
At the end of the day it all comes back to how well the lifters oil supply and oil condition is for a lifter to do it's job.
But I could wrong I'm no expert.

I believe they are eaton lifters. I prefer hylift topline slow bleed with axle oiling
