96ci to 110ci upgrade
« on: September 29, 2008, 02:20:40 PM »

Everyone here knows of the problems with the stock SE 110 engines. Has anyone done the 96 to 110 modification, and if so are the same problems present? thanks (reason for asking looking 09 RG with stock 96 and thinking about going to 103/110 etc)

Exact same parts are involved, 110 kit or CVO engine, and the problems had nothing to do with assembly of the engine.  Does that give you an idea of where I'm going with this?

If you get a kit that has all the latest updated parts, you will still be in the same boat as all those folks who just had their CVO's "enhanced"; waiting to see if this program really solved the problems.  After watching the MoCo jerk these folks around for the past two years, I would sooner trade for a moped than give Milwaukee another handful of cash to buy into the 110 saga.  Do yourself a favor and find a good engine builder to put something together with good aftermarket parts.

If staying with HD parts I would go with the 113 kit over the 110,just my opinion

I didn't think you could go from 96" to 110"

96" to 103 "  (what I did)

96" to 113"   ( what I wish I'd done)

but not 96" to 110"

jerry, that is what i thought but wanted to confirm. Had considered trading in for 2009 SERG but for obvious reasons i really did not want the 110 engine. so I thought I would make my own "tricked out" bike and do the 103. But it is America and bigger is better , so before I dropped the coin I thought I would check.
Unfortunately, I thought I did have a good engine builder but still had an engine failure at 2000 miles! So I was trying to do the harley engine upgrade at time of purchase (even though end result won't be the same performance of aftermarket, it also won't cost 5k for upgrade and 6k to replace the engine!)

BB,
According to 2009 part catalogue there is a 110 upgrade from 96, but I will go check to make sure. I had not looked at a 113 but I guess I will check that also. john

you can get 107" by boring your stock cylinders to 3-15/16"...doesn't involve splitting and boring the crankcases like 110" does...about half the cost of a 110"

If you're going to bore your cases anyway then go with the 113. I've never heard of anyone on the site who has built a 113 that isn't happy with AND, the 113 S&S is legendary so there must be something in those numbers. As for me, I just wish I had spent the additional $2,500 while I had the motor apart anyway doing the 103 build. If you've ever ridden with Grover (Mark) you'd know why I love the H-D version of a 113" Anyway, it's just my opinion and you know what opinions are like

To get the 110 from a 96 you have to split the cases.

Remove the crank

Bore the cases

Replace everything and watch it leak

Use Axtell or Millennium cylinders and your 110 wont leak

Go with a 113 and it wont leak :2vrolijk_21:

You're nuts if you're gonna completely take apart a brand new 96" and make it a 110! You have so many options besides that if you're building a new motor! The real options are to make it a 103 with new P's and C's only. Then do cams and some headwork, new TB and get a good runner. At least as long as the crank holds together. But beyond that, build that motor to any size you want with REAL parts, or buy a Jims 120 or 131! JMO! ;)

Howie,
Originally was going to do a 103+ build, but thought I would get other opinions on builds. With the current disaster I had with my CR build, I was trying to get "harley" part engine that could be fixed at dealer. My performance parameters were simple: 100 to 105 TQ. My opinon of the 110 after watching threads for over 2 years here was obviously not good. But as with many things in life, if you don't ask questions you don't find out any information. Since I have been without a motor for over 21/2 months I am chomping at the bit to get "something", fortunately logic catches up to impulse and will hopefully make a better decision this time. john

HWYMAN1 IMHO if those are the numbers you are looking for, you can get them out of the 96 with no problem at all. If you want to go bigger the 103 has been the best big inch motor HD has ever done to date. It is very reliable and makes some good power.
