Going for Broke
« on: November 26, 2005, 10:19:33 AM »

I,ve got 700 miles on my FLSTFSE2 and wanted more [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]...low to mid on demand.
Here's what I'm doing right now.  I'm taking pictures of the whole process and will post a link shortly.

HTCC CNC Ported Heads w/compression releases
Matching htcc forged stroker 10.5:1 pistons
258 cams
roller rockers, forged supports and roller tappets
perfect fit pushrods and high tensile studs
SE 50mm throttle body
Thunderheader 2-1 pipes
Race Tuner

My dealer has done a lot of builds and tells me this will be a real torque machine.  I do most of my driving in the 2500-5000rpm range and want the low to mid range power and hill climb grunt.  Thank goodness for black friday sale.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, fatboyse2,
Sound like a good selection of MODS, with the exception of the Roller Rockers.  Really would be overkill with less than .600" lift on the SE-258 cams.  I would go with the SE-260 cams.  I had similar set up on Ol' Maudie when she had a 95" Motor, except for the 2 1nto 1 Header, and the perfect fit pushrods.  Ran pretty good, but nothing like the "Big Motor" I have in her now!  Later--HUBBARD

Fatboy,

Sounds like what I would love to do. Have they given you any idea of Hp & Tq numbers. what made you choose the 258. (I agree with Hub doing all this the 260 would be better) I would sugest your 2500 - 5000 range will change to 3000 - 6000. It will be a whole new ride.

They're expecting 115/115+ with this setup.  Why the 260s over the 258s.  I understood the 260s were more mid to top end of the rpms and 258s started lower thru hi-mid of the band.  I need to move more than the bike :o

That's pretty much the same set up I put in my 04 SEEG. Except I used the 260 cams, stock TB, and a D&D Borezilla exhaust. MY #'s where 117 hp 114tq. It ran pretty strong but not strong enough...
One thing I did NOT do was go with the timkin upgrade and SE Pro crank. At 4200 miles it blew the bearing out! My dealership covered it under warranty.
This time around I'm going with SE Pro crank & Timkin upgrade. I was also considering the HD113 cylinders, but I'm in the process of checking out a 124 set up with heavier mods throughout.
You should check out gear drive cams and go with a timkin conversion or the new GP designs bearing support. I posted an article about the bearing support in the twin cam section. It's just good insurance down the road...Or you might really be "Going for broke"! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Good luck,

Welcome aboard here.  The motor project sound impressive.  And you're already finding out one of the great benefits of this place; tons of information available from folks that have been there.   Sometimes the hard part is just sorting it all out while keeping your own intentions in mind.

Again, welcome aboard.  Don't forget to take the kidding with the help.  It's all part of the process here  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  And don't forget to report on everything when it's all done.

and here's some of the new SE parts still to be installed on the bike.  By the way, I switched to SE264 cams after a several beer discussion with the dealer service guys.

Now for the good stuff.  Here's the HTCC ported heads (the valves were much bigger than the se103 heads that came with the bike).

Intake side should be left rough to break up the gas. Exhaust side should be polished for smooth flow. I have played with A flow bench A lot.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, OTIS,
Intake side should be bead-blasted for the best performance, would you agree?  Gaurantee the Heads on OTIS (THE BIKE) have been bead-blasted.  Ut-oh!  Naw, that can't be!  You said that Engine was a STOCK 95"!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] My A$$!  Later--HUBBARD

Just curious because mine are at 161, and I have the same heads.

What are the thoughts on Compression Releases on my bike setup...are they needed [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  My dealer recommended them as I had bumped my compression to 10.5:1 and the ported heads are predrilled for the releases, so naturally I said "sure, why not, I'm going for broke anyway".

I've only had one cooolldd ride since the build and a dozen starts since it's been put back together so the pain in the asp factor and burnt thumbs have not set in yet.  I don't know if they will.  I've been thinking about my startup routine to and making sure that "push down releases" is part of it.  I haven't yet tried startup without them pushed down.  here's a pic anyway.  Welcome the thoughts.

My routine is kinda like Hubbards. I also depress mine when dismounting bike. Then it's ready for ignition when I wanna roll!
The only time I leave them up is when it's sitting for a few days or in storage.

Good luck, [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

fatboyse2, just curious why you even bought a moco bike, with the cost of the CVO and all the mods you have done so far you got to be close to 40k. you could have had a custom builder put together a real sweet race machine for that price tag. I considered this option but decided the fatboy was a good compromise of performance and looks, and would keep me out of trouble. I have had a tendency to forget my rational & safe side when given the opportunity  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I'm about to do the same mods that fatboy has just completed.  I'd probably look at a Zippers 120 but I like the idea of keeping *something* from the original, and to be honest, not everyone needs (or wants) 500ci under the tank...lol.

As for the customs, EAGLE1, I used to own a $50,000 Bourget Low Blow, 120ci HO Merch, stump-pulling power, tons of nice parts, bathed in chrome, etc.  Nice bike, but NOT a Harley.

Those customs aren't for everyone either.

There's something about having "1HD1" in the VIN that makes a difference to a MAJORITY of the potential resale market.  Not many people buy used customs, take my word for it.

You can't have everything.  Where would you put it?

I did a lot of looking around before I bought my Harley.  I drove a couple of real hot customs in the 40 large range.  I rode a Bourget Fatdaddy (not my cup of tea style wise) and a real nice Pitbull which was the absolute best looking bike I'd ever seen.  But I'm not 20 and I don't want a 20 mile only ride.  It's nice to have a cool show bike and cart it around to all the shows and bars for others to look at with awe, but after riding the pitbull I decided I wanted a bike I could ride all day (not just for an hour at a time), I wanted it reliable and I liked the flexibility to make it the best it could be.  So, after all that, the day I brought my new CVO home I went riding with my neighbor who bought a 50 large Bourget a couple months before.  Within 20 miles he was asking for a break and I was ready for more twisty road[smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

yup, I hear ya!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] nice bar hoppers but not very practical for cruzing. sure you will be on big, when you pull up to your favorite watering hole, but you wont be going too much further than that before you are squirming in your seat. also with the moco you have tons of accessories off the shelf when you feel like changing her a bit, add a detachable windshield, bags & sundowner, and your ready for the long haul. cant do that with a custom. its really the best of both worlds with the CVO!
