How many miles to a tank of fuel?
« on: April 09, 2017, 05:29:10 AM »

I've just changed from a 2013 streetglide to a 2016 CVO but....

2013 103" had a range of well over 200miles (300 on one run!)
2016 110" Cvo in only getting 160 to a tank?

What does anyone else get? Can I improve it?

I can go 200 miles plus if I take it easy. . Buy it goes quick when I dump a tank full at 85mph. About 175 miles when I do that. . The guys that go 250 on a tank aren't going as fast as I am. . Stuart.

Instead of trying to compare miles per tank, what exactly is your fuel consumption in miles per gallon?  When you do stop for fuel, how many gallons does it take to fill up?  The reason I ask these questions is that this subject has come up many times before, and in some cases people have been going strictly by the "miles to empty" reading versus keeping detailed records of miles and gallons used.  Those miles to empty readings can vary all over the map.

With a six gallon fuel tank, 40 mpg should give you a range of 240 miles.  If you ride conservatively, even a 110 SG should be capable of as much as 50 mpg.  If your mileage is worse than 40, perhaps you're riding that 110 like you stole it?

My point is there are too many variables for anyone to really give you a definitive answer.  As the ads say, your results may vary. ;)

It also depends on what blend of gas you're using.

As we (Andy, Ernie, Don, me and others from Calif) travel east we've all noticed that we get better mileage once we get out of California and it seems like the further east we go (or is that the more gas that we run through our  tanks and motors) that our mileage increases.  On my 2013 CVO Ultra Classic I'll get 175-180 mph on the freeway (cruise control at 80 mph).  I've never got 200 miles on this bike.....not even when I was back east.

I imagine other things like load weight (size of rider and with or without passenger) as well as wind can have an effect on gas mileage too.

I always ride solo, and by the miles to empty. I should be able to get 250+ on a tank. I haven't tried to push it that far, but have done 230+. I do usually average over 40 miles to a gallon. So the math does work out to the 250+ number.

I recommend using fuelly.com to track your own mileage.  I have used it for about 4 years to track all of my vehicles, and my wife's too, if she remembers.  Once you set up an account, you can just text the info at every fill-up and it will send you your MPG.  You can go to the website too, if you want more detailed info.  This will give you the trends and records you need to determine, based on your riding style, how much you can get out of a tank.

Personally, I like to ride as if I have a 5 gallon tank.

Holy crapstick what am I doing wrong? I have a 2015 SESG it has S&S 570 cams, 2 into 1 D&D Boarzilla and Thundermax tuner. I can't get near 200 miles on a tank. Live in south Florida everything is flat and mostly straight. I do a lot of highway miles around 75 to 80 solo riding. Yesterday was a great example left Bokeelia Fl (west coast) heading east home. Get to Weston on the Alley and range says I have about 10 miles left. I probably could have made it home but stopped for gas. Put in 5.1 gallons. It wasn't quite 160 miles. I had filled tank when l left Bokeelia. Set cruise at 80. What the hell am I doing wrong?

13 CVO limited, 2 up (400#) fully loaded with luggage, cruising on the slab at 85 or so, I might get 170 miles from the tank before the light comes on and then I generally put in about 5.6 gallons.

local riding on 2 lane roads, 2 up with no luggage just putting around the country side I can go 200 but I have never pushed it beyond that.

More to the Jerry's point, highway cruising trying to make time I get about 30 mpg. Sunday afternoon ride through the country side I get about 46 mpg.

Then again I only care about bad gas mileage when I am out west and wondering just how much farther to a gas station!!!

This is for cars but in my experience holds true on a percentage basis for bikes:

the wife and I rode from Louisiana to Washington, dc.  on the interstate, cruising about 80 (or so :D) we were averaging between 39 and 41 mpg.  got quite a bit better when we were doing a little slower, but where's the fun in that  :carrot:

For me, speed has nothing to do with it. Once I get over 3200 my mileage goes to hell.

I have noticed once over 3000 rpm the fuel milage goes away fast.  I usually have cruise at 80 mph, 2900 rpm or so on the interstate.

I don't mean to be a "downer" on this post but you know Harley's odometer/speedometers are about 6% +. Which means for every 100miles you ride your odometer is reading 106. i.e. 200=212.  So a true 80mpg is about 3200 rpm's. Just saying.

This seems to have changed around model year 2015.  I have a '15 FLHTK and a '16 Roadster, and both of the speedos are within 1 mph at 75.  No, they haven't been updated either.

For the limited's you can see the difference on the nav map. Bring up mph on the screen and compare.

36 mph is what I average so realistically about 180 miles before it's time to get gas.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.

If you're saying that you can compare the normal speedometer gauge readout to the digital readout on the navigation display, that comparison isn't going to give you a useful result.  Both of those readouts use the vss to calculate the speed,  Harley doesn't display the GPS-calculated speed.  You have to use a different instrument to determine the GPS calculated speed, such as a GPS (Garmin, Tom Tom) or a GPS app on a smart phone.

If the two displays don't match on your bike, it is likely that one (probably the speedometer) is malfunctioning.  I have seen a few in the past with poor needle placement, or it could be failure of the speedo.

The tuning devices PV /TTS allow you to adjust the tire sizing to correct speed.   Also with PV you need to also look at changing the gas mileage setting as well or check it matches.   I check at 70 mph.  Farming to speedo.

For fuel mileage you want to know is at what kPa your running at at highway speed to understand what the target afr is.  It may help explain why your fuel mileage is what it is.    Be cognizant of what gear/rpm your at and also if you are in a closed loop environment or not at that point.

For the Thundermax they when I played with it were typically rich and you "may" be able to lean up the afr to help get better mileage.  You may also want to validate speed on computer to speed on gps them being off can quickly calculate to deflated gas mileage reading.

I have the tts and have adjusted the setting for the speedometer. One question though, can you adjust it to far? If I recall it's only recommended to go so far. Will it cause an issue?

Sure you can go to far as it could skew your numbers in either direction hence validating speed either on a dyno or GPS.   Being off also has effect on mileage accuracy of fuel/mileage.  (MPG)

So I'm wondering after reading here. For me when I do 80 mph I am right at 3000 rpm......3000 to 3100. That's on a 2015. Is it different for the 2016's or 2017's? Yes I can go into my Thundermax and play with the AFR's for better mileage. Have to watch a lot of you tube videos as to not screw it up.

No wonder you don't get good fuel mileage. :huepfenlol2: Yes I read the rest just couldn't resist. ;D

Seems the speedometer is a little more accurate on my 17 than my 15 was or my 13 is.

My older bikes 80 on the speedometer was 77 mph on the garmin GPS.  The 17, its 78.5 to 79 mph.

From new I have been tracking fuel consumption on my 2016 FLHXE. Over one year the average mpg is 42.6 mpg. That's with 6510 miles ridden.     :jalapeno:
That's all types of journeys, short, long, highway, cruising, touring, with / without baggage, basically just riding my bike throughout the year. Up mountains, along flats, around twisties and pottering along taking in the tunes.

I usually average 38mpg, but the last 2 tanks were 42 and 47.  The last 2 tanks were riding with a group so I wasn't riding as aggressive.  This on a stage 3 117 with the stock header, Street Cannons, and HD tune.

Seems the speedometer is a little more accurate on my 17 than my 15 was or my 13 is.

My older bikes 80 on the speedometer was 77 mph on the garmin GPS.  The 17, its 78.5 to 79 mph.
Not the case with mine. Both the 12 and 17 are about 4 mph off at 80

When I checked my speed against a separate GPS it was within 2 MPH. If I recall the bike was a little high.  I averaged about 38 to 39 going to work (city and highway).  If I ride by myself and just take it easy I get around 43.  When I ride two on trips we average again around 38 to 39.  I usually fill up around 150 to be safe and usually need about 4 gallons.  My 2010 Convertible got worse mileage but I always run her hard while my 2010 Ultra averaged about 3 MPG more than the 110 CVO limited.

I no longer find it necessary to run 80 mph all the time like most of the posters. Traffic increasing over the years along with age has made slower better for me.
We still run speed limit, whatever it is, but rarely any more. $300 tickets and getting there 7 minutes quicker just do not add up.
I do get 44 mpg on my 15 with 1.75 Fulsac baffles and a FP3, got 42 on the 09 SERG with same baffles and a TTS tune by a tuner most on this site think is good here in Florida. On the 15 I buy gas around 200 and it is within a tenth or so of 4.5 gallon every time.

When run my 19 SESG down to empty and the "miles to R" says 11 miles and I fuel up it only takes 5 gallons. Is there a way to calibrate the system?

It would be nice if they included a setting in the BCM to calibrate the fuel gauge, but if there is one on the late model bikes I've never heard of it.  You could do a mechanical calibration by bending the rod for the fuel gauge sending unit, but it tends to be a trial and error method that requires a lot of patience.  An error in the opposite direction, gauge reading higher than it should, is easier to fix with a little homemade electrical solution.

If you want to make the gauge read higher than it currently does, you would need to bend the float rod so the float is slightly lower.  It's a good idea to leave a little cushion instead of trying to make the gauge exact.  For instance, when the gauge says empty and the miles to empty display says zero, you want to have a little reserve of fuel still on board.  When I did my old 5 gallon tank (actual capacity 5.4 gallons to the bottom of the filler neck), I set it up so I still have a .4 gallon reserve when the gauge shows empty.  I don't have that much confidence in Harley's gauges, and since I had to push this overweight sucker to the gas station when it ran out of gas with the gauge showing 3/16 of a gallon remaining and the low fuel light still off (back when it was new), I wanted to make sure that wouldn't happen again.

Well over 200 miles per tank?  Seriously?  You can guys can wait between pee stops that long  :huepfenlol2: ?!

I'd not be surprised that, if pushed, my longest range bike is my smallest tanked bike.  The old Evo FXR gets so much better miles than does the Road King or the Road Glide that the older bike would probably win that fight.  I can't regularly out-pee any of them though; at least not if I'm doing my regular bottle of water at a gas stop.
