With the markup, that's the price of a 2020 mid-engine Corvette.  In what decade is that dealer living?

In the car business this is called "playing get lucky motors". The thinking is that if you hold out for crazy money, someone will walk in and pay it. They will buy the story.

There are folks that $60,000 is peanuts, it's all about having something hard to get and flashy.

In my opinion this is destroying  Harley Davidson. Often, customers that grossly overpay figure it out. Then a customer is lost.

At the same time traditional Harley customers are even more turned off. Once upon a time owning and riding Harleys ment more than just money. Nobody like to feel like a dollar sign when they enter a Harley dealership but they are moving in that direction.

Additionally, it's not like anyone could truthfully claim that any new Harley is really worth this kinda money. Not built using the best components, doesn't have competitive HP, ride, quality, handling or performance. Guess to each there own.

No Vaseline or KY here ... For that price, you get the HD Premium "copper-colored" anti-seize!

It seems to me that before the MOCO went to the Bass Pro/Cabelas type 'mega-shops', the customer service AND the repair services were of higher quality.

For those NOT old enough to remember, it was back when there were plenty of smaller, family-run dealerships that actually put the customer first.

Cheers,

Now come on, when you consider how very extremely rare and special these bikes are and the extra care, the numerous cutting edge features that are rarely found on other bikes, Harley leading the world in professional design excellence,  & manufacturing precision with expert craftsmanship that goes into this highly desirable top line of performance customized motorcycles, then a $19k extra extra profit markup is ....beyond the ability of even the best salesman gibberish to move metal at that price unless the buyer is uneducated on MCs, gullible, and has more money than sense.

Just further proof that Harley and many of it's dealers still don't have a clue.  Considering the fact the bikes are already seriously overpriced at MSRP, having a dealer add another 50% markup is ridiculous.   The saddest part, however, is that the odds are some fool will walk in and buy it.  We still have lots of people in this country who equate overpaying for things as some sort of a badge of honor they can flash to impress the easily impressed among us.  In parts of the country where the tech companies dominate the local economy this is probably common.  They already cause prices of housing to skyrocket beyond the reach of 98% of the populace, may as well do the same for vehicles and other items.

Nope; they learned this from the car business. As a car salesman once told me "rather sell one and make myself $10,000 than sell ten making $1000 each" said it was much less stress. I think his view said it all. I just shook my head.

As others have said, gone are the days when Harley dealers were owned by motorcycle enthusiast families.

Just plain capitalist greed, that's all. The American way. Somebody with that kind of money will come along and buy it and have his people write it off as a company vehicle.

Another car sales strategy is to take the inflated "listed price" which is higher than MSRP and then show a sizable "discount" from that listed price, to impress the buyer on "what a great deal you are getting here because ___________".  The blank is filled with whatever bullchit the salesman thinks will sound good to that buyer.

Similar thought process to gamblers I know who go to the boats or to Vegas & when they return they "won" $2,000 because that is what they had left in their pockets, after they lost $10k in the casino and had a couple thousand left.

When it comes to money, some people are no smarter than when it comes to anything else.  Just look around, the stupid walk among us, and one of them is the buyer for that $19k marked up bike.  Except to his buddies the price will be something like "I made them cut me a deal and they took $10k off the price!" Except he got took and paid $9k over MSRP & probably another $1,000 in dealer profit markups for 'make ready" or whatever.

I live 15 miles from that dealer. Sad. Used to be a nice small family owned shop. The new owners own another dealership in Riverside, CA I believe. Crazy prices.
Lucky there is dealer closer to me. Although, they just got bought last year by someone from Texas with a few other Harley dealerships.

That's the trend. Dealer chains, some tied to auto dealerships. Helps them hold higher margins, they often follow a strict sales process like found in car dealerships.

It's the new way of doing business. Lotta money to be made off Harley riders, don't ya know!

Not defending the dealer, but perhaps they want to hold on to it for a while to get some floor traffic.

By pricing it high two things happen, it wont sell, and if it does, wow oh wow what a sale!.
Then they can start bringing it down till it sells for perhaps a couple grand over MSRP.

Anything is possible. I would not see a CVO with a 19K pack as a positive. It would tell me to shop somewhere else. If they are that overpriced, not worth the effort.

In my humble opinion; sell your CVO's at MSRP. There is plenty of margin for the dealer, the price is plenty high for the consumer.

Better to forge long term customers that come back for service, clothing and accessories. When a bike first comes in you'll find the highest interest. 6 months later it's old news. Available everywhere. Might require selling below MSRP. Harley works on a turn to earn system, the faster you sell a bike the faster it's replaced.

At the end of the day it's just a motorcycle. Harley makes more everyday!

For that price I guarantee you that the anti-seize ain’t going to work.

I've decided I won't even buy a used Harley.  If I decide in the near future I'd like another bike, it will be a different brand.  The only Harley dealer left around here is about as crooked as the day is long, and I won't even buy a set of plugs from them.

Riverside HD is the sister shop, they also own a dealership in another state. We had the unfortunate luck to have experienced their car salesman tactics.  In 16' we were looking for a Sporty 48 for my other half and they had the right color.  It's a big dealership and when you walk in you see the raised area with the high counter where the managers hide.  They work off of the paper with the 4 squares.  Very car dealership.  Well after 6 1/2 hours later we got the bike for sticker out the door.  (luckily I've bought a lot of cars over the years and seen all the tricks)  The experience was so unnecessary.  I've seen 2 year old models on their floor with mark up!  I think their plan is start higher, end up higher!  In retrospect, I purchased my 17' CVO from a smaller dealership, still OTD for sticker, lots of goodies included & the deal took minutes to ink!  Can you guess who will get our future business?

Yup, that is HBHD for ya. They are generally like piranhas when you walk in the door. They're very few places in Southern California that don't have that Mark up. If I'm not mistaken the one in Irvine doesn't have the markup and neither does laidlaws but I could be wrong

Here's the problem I see...a veteran HD owner isn't going to pay that because he knows better.  The likelyhood of a first-time HD buyer dropping $60k on a bike is remote...unless thing are different in California.  There's no way I'd buy from this dealer, even if they dropped the price to MSRP.  These pricing tactics say a lot about their character.

At San Jose HD right now, dealer mark up on the CVO is $1,700. Regular Ultra is $975. They are part of the conglomerate that owns Thunder Road and Salinas/Monterey HD.

Pittsburgh pa. Local dealer adds Dealer Set up to all bikes. 1100 on cvo.  Refuse to pay when making 20% at sticker. 8800 without extra. 9900 on a 46000 tag with extra mark up!

Pays for the plastic sleeve thing that the price sheet is placed in.  They reuse it but charge full price for it over and over and over.

It has nothing to do with “komifornia” “Pennsa-Tucky”, or any other place. It’s all about the “Automall-Walmart’s” taking over. Dudley Perkins HD is now San Francisco HD. “Lane Splitter HD is now San Jose HD”.  HD set what some small dealers see as unreasonable standards. They are required to have so many feet of space, and carry so much stock and inventory. The small places couldn’t do that and either shut down, folded in with other dealers, or were bought out by the mega auto dealer conglomerates.

They are doing what Walmart did, squeezing out the mom and pops stores with strategically placed mega stores. Then selling stuff from Asia and Central America just like a Walmart.  It’s the new American model, capitalism at its finest.  It used to be when you walked into the Harley dealership, the owner or one of his family members would come and say hi. They would ask you how you were doing, and how your friends and family are. They talked about everything but motorcycles and accessories. They saw you as a friend. Now when you walk into an HD dealer, you are descended upon by 4 hungry salesmen circling you like sharks.

We did this to ourselves when we put making profits more important than people.

And a lot of those family owned friendly HD shops were sold by owners who cashed in big time on their investment & saw a chance to make a heck of a lot of money & use that money for things they cared more about than owning a HD dealership.  I saw the same thing happen in a lot of other industries besides auto & MC.  Mom & Pop cashed out.  Nothing wrong with that either.  If we as customers rejected the "auto mall" concept of selling mass quantities to the masses, manufacturers would react to create another way to market their merchandise.  At this point in time a lot of customers must prefer the concept, otherwise those auto malls would have no customers & they would be gone sooner than later.

Very true. Additionally; Harley dropped regulations that once encouraged single family owned dealerships. If my memory is correct a dealer can now own up to 5 dealerships. This has encouraged mega dealerships, some owned by mega car dealerships.

Car dealerships aren't buying Harley franchises out of love for the sport or because they even ride. They simply see it as a huge money making opportunity. They believe we are totally brand loyal and will pay whatever for that honor. Harley now markets it's self as an upscale product with wealthy customers that like to dress up and play biker on weekends.

This image is much more important than investing the R&D to build high quality, competitive motorcycles.

More and more, old time Harley riders will buy used. Will do there own maintenance or use independent shops.

Sorry for the long rant.

I'm in California and got $2,500 off my 2020 CVO Limited last month from my nearby dealer 15 miles away. Of course, it is owned and has been owned by the same family for over 30 years.
There are still some good dealers around, you just have to seek them out.

Sorry, just saw your reply.
Yes, I know I'm lucky, especially living here in California, where it seems like everyone is always trying to reach into our pockets for more money.
