I'm starting my install tomorrow. I plan to remove and drill holes in the engine guard to run wires since I have a roadie and I don't see a "clean" way to run the wires past the fairing supports. Call me picky....

This is a tricky question - Not all wet head bikes are the same.  Some come with Stage I systems and some come with the stage II systems.  Look for the "Boom Stage II" verbiage on the Frt Speakers.   Stage II systems have a 300w Amp for every Pair of Speakers.   Stage I systems do not.   The 2 systems sound DRASTICALLY different.  If you add the speakers to a Stage II system you have to add an additional 300W amp to drive them, I do no think that you have to add the additional amp on a Stage I install but you'd have to ask someone that has done that to be sure.

I installed a set on my 16 CVO Street Glide (Factory Stage II) and I think they are awesome.  I have another friend on this list who also installed them on his 16 CVO Street Glide and he loves them too.  The fairing lowers are equalized for Mid / Tweet and the others get reflashed to compensate with the low end.   The difference is not overly dramatic but you will notice deeper lows and crisp clear highs and overall volume is greatly increased.   I find that on the highway now I ride with the volume set at 3 or 4 bars lower than before.  If you crank it up your ears will be ringing!  With the additional amp, speakers, harnesses and everything else necessary to install you can expect around 1800 bucks give or take.  If you are an audiophile then I think it's worth the money.

If you have a Stage I bike then you will have to reach out to someone with one of those bikes for a comment.

Took my time but my install of boom speakers in the lower fairing is done. Here are some pictures of the important steps with comments. I drilled the engine guard and fed the wires inside after removing the guard from the bike. First caution is when removing the guard, don't expect the bolt at the top center to hold the guard from falling off, don't unscrew the bolt, that bolt is there ONLY AS A LOCATION POINT, THERE IS NO NUT ON THE BACK SIDE OR THREADS IN THE FRAME, all that holds the guard is the 2 bolts at the bottom. Next, when you reinstall the guard, relocate the top bolt and if it's a roadglide, like mine, reposition the guard into the fairings lower supports before bolting in the bottom bolts.

Sorry some of these pictures might be upside down, don't know how to fix it.

In the picture above you can see where I drilled the hole and fed the wires out the top of the guard just to the right of center, aligning the wires to go under the fuel tank on the right side of the bike. This picture shows where I drilled behind the lower fairing. It's hard to see but it's next to the vertical clamp. I drilled a 9/16 hole in the center to allow 4 wires through the hole and a 7/16 hole for 2 wires on each side.

After feeding the wires, I installed a 9/16 grommet in the center hole for clean looks and the 3/8 plastic split conduit around the wires, fed them under the tank, I had to cut and splice about 3ft of extra wire gauge 14 and to make it easier for me, I spliced and soldered the female pins on the end.

Plugged the wires into the harness connector for testing. My goal on this is to run boom 1, exchanging the rear tourpak speakers (the tourpak is quick disconnect removed) for lower fairing speakers, allowing for fade adjustments, showing them as rear speakers by plugging into the deutch connector on the harness side, with a female connector and allowing for a quick switch back to the tourpak pods when I need the tourpak.

Yes, even working as boom 1 they enhance the sound quality and add a lot of missing tweeter notes. Seems to me both midrange and bass are fuller sounding, but it could be that I have been running just the two front speakers for almost a year and I've been missing what the other half of the amp was putting out.

How did you wire that Stage 2 speaker? I just installed mine and each speaker takes 4 wires to it.
