Presidential Candidates
« on: October 24, 2004, 09:22:44 PM »

'Tis the season for polls and voting (at least here in the U.S.A., Tony) so I thought we could have a little fun with the couple of polls I started here.  I would've put them in the "Humor" section, but as we've already established, no one visits there.

Who would you like to see be the next President of the United States?

As a registered Republican, I'd like to know if we can have another choice?  Kerry would get the country rolling economically but let it go to hell on foreign policy and terrorst protection.

Bush done a good job of protecting the country but has let it go to hell economically (I'm not one of the top 10% of income erners in this country, so he hasn't helped me do anything but get poorer).

Can we get a viable (Nader is not viable) third choice candidate?  JMHO

If by "viable" you mean someone that can actually both represent and compete through the elections process, survive the electoral process, and actually then be able to garner enough of the electoral count to not just compete but win in the national election then the answer is, well.... no.

Me too.  I wish that either of the candidates were a better "total choice."  But they're what we've got.  Since the Executive has such greater effective control over the foreign and security agenda and the legislature has such nearly dominant control over the intent and function of domestic and economic policy through national legislation and administrative law "suggestion" that's how I usually base my choice anyway.  I vote for a President based on foreign and security policy positions and his obvious staff choices (if known) and I vote for Congresscritters based on their impact on the other half of the agenda.

A third choice for the Executive position might (or might not) be nice.  Just hard to see how someone survives to get there and win outside the party structures (currently).  There are very few native born Americans (a Constututional requirement for the office) with the monetary resources to fund a campaign outside the party structures.  And if he or she truly did come from outside the ranks and wished to govern the same way then who are they going to fill all the ministerial and deputy positions with?  Unfortunately the new guy would likely still be significnatly captive to the same type of policy approaches and choices his party predecessors managed just because the entire governmental structure he's "ruling" is already built that way and isn't really changeable in the time frame he or she would be allowed.  One of those cases where form dictates function.  Maybe not for the broad brush media rich type of things.  But for the day to day grinding out of governing it really does.

No matter your opinion at this point, Bush is the President.

Now comes the more important item to discuss...if Kerry or for that matter Bush, is truly interested in moving the country forward, let's share and incorporate some of the each other's ideas into the future of the USA.

After all, I thought both of them had the GREATER interest of the USA at heart.  Now's the time to remove the retoric and move forward with the opinion.

It's time to [bgcolor=Yellow]move past politics and ensure the future of our country and it's people[/bgcolor].
