Replacing the stock Harley radio
« on: February 27, 2005, 07:39:19 PM »

Well, I finally got fed up with the skipping problems  (and lost tour pak space) caused by my FLTRSEI2 CD changer.  After reading another post on this board:
http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=fltr_gen;action=display;num=1095425006
I decided to go with the Biketronics wiring and the Sony CDX-M800.

My real problem now is the HUGE hole left after removing that monsterous stock radio.  I still have more research to do on mounting kits and "filler" plates for the front.  But, if anyone wants to share what they did to successfully install an aftermarket stereo in a bagger, I would LOVE to learn from others' successes/mistakes.

Thanks,

Mike

Hey there

I saw a post somewhere around that suggested the Biketronics kit will not work on SE bikes. I have dealt with Mike at Biketronics and found him to be a very upstanding guy. You should call him to make sure-I am not positive if this is the case or not

Last time I spoke to Mike, he was telling me his retro radio kit came with everything needed to put the aftermarket radio in.

Hope this helps! PEZ www.hogtunes.com

PEZ,

Thanks for the message.  I actually emailed Mike last year, told him I had an SE, and he did not mention anything about possible problems.  I will be sure to double-check with him again this week.  (Man....I hope he has something for that massive stereo hole in the fairing!!!)

Also thanks for posting your website address!  If found your site about a month ago and forgot to bookmark it!!!  Expect a speaker order this week!

I just recently had the discussion with Biketronics and found out their unit doens't work with the 04 and 05 SEEGs as they use the fancier amplified radio kit as the stock piece.  The other bikes should be ok from what I've been told.

To address the other question, however, I was told by Biketronics during the same set of conversations that their retro radio kits includes a filler plate that fills out the hole the new radio will mount through.  In fact you'll check some of the prior hreads I'm sure I remember seeing a few pics of installed radios that distinctly show the filler.

Mikey, glad you found what you needed.  Like you I was pleased to see the upgrades in ability and function that would be had (was using the same radio you've chosen) and the XM controls with that kit would all be managed through the handlebar controls.  Very slick.  If you ever want to add even more audio sources (GPS unit, mini disc deck in the tour pack, who knows....) Sony makes an AUX In adpator that will let you run more audio units through the head unit you've got and they would be controllable from the handlebars as well.

Twolanerider,

Not fair!

Actually I am working on photos.  I loaned my digital camera to a client and need to get it back.

But, you better be careful.  At only 141 miles away from me here in Kansas City, you could find yourself having to buy the first beer after I enjoy a nice ride to Joplin.  (Trash that helmet law would ya?)

Take Care,

MikeyP

No crankiness here brother.  It's all in good fun!   [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif]

I'm glad you mentioned the Hog Rally.  It has been awhile since I visited the website and they have added a LOT of stuff to do!

Unfortunately I cannot get released from work for Thursday or Friday, but we might just hook up for the parade on Saturday!

Be Safe!
