So I have a question.
Is the inner fairing painted?
I was told they are on the triple red 00's but I saw one at Daytona that wasn't.
I know the instrument cluster is but I'm wondering about the inner fairing.

When I say painted I mean not the flat black but some shade of the red found on the bodywork?

Thanks for the pics, you picked a good one. That was the only color that year that came with the painted inner fairing, instrument pod, and matching seat and lowers. Doc

It looks great, Don.  Sure brings back memories of my 01 black/grey SERG.  I'll predict you will ride this bike more often then your SEEG this summer.  My SERG was the most comfortable riding bike I have owned...

Congratulations on your acquisition!  She's a beauty!   :2vrolijk_21:

Scott

Not sure about riding it more.  If only because the SEEG is so dialed in to me by now.  We just fit.  And the engine is going to pull so much harder.  Trips of any length will happen with the SEEG if for no other reason than the trailer hitch.  Anything shorter, however, I'm looking forward to stretching this one out though.  Am hoping the red/black stock seat isn't a ball buster or ass smasher.  Would really like to leave the stock seat on it as it just looks so damn good on the bike.  Am looking forward to getting familiar with it.

Already figured out that while the fairing is off to find the grommets I pushed through I need to get a garage door xmitter to stick inside there.  Felt like an idiot flashing the headlights at the house with nothing happening.... :-*

That's one of those things best left unsaid if it goes unwitnessed!

As far as the seat goes, I couldn't take it.  It came off and my favorite Pillow Style seat went on.  The low profile pillow seat doesn't cost any seat height, is nice on the a$$ and has some nice back support.  I have put this seat on my last three bikes and love it...  and yeah, the grommets can be a pain in the a$$ for sure!

congrats on the new bike look forwrd to the upcoming pictorails

SERG gets HID
SERG gets powder coated and diamond cut motor
SERG gets upgraded audio system

All those thoughts have already been running through my mind Neal.  If I ride it much it'll likely get HID.  Assuming the stock lights are as poor as most of them were that to me is just a safety thing.

The audio system I'm honestly not too concerned about.  I can still make cassette tapes.  And longer runs will happen on the SEEG.  He said he's already got upgraded speakers in it.  But they're those upgraded POS that Harley offered.  So I might stick different speakers in it.  But likely not a lot more than that.

Unless it just seems painfully anemic I don't plan to dick with the motor either.  Accessory cover here and there.  But nothing internally.  The only thing I could right now see myself doing is a cam change.  The 2000 model year bikes had a then notorious cam bearing issue.  When that failed on those several that it did the damage could be catastrophic.  So after I've gotten a feel for it I could see a set of gear drive cams going in as prophylactic for the tensioners and cam bearing issue for that model year.  But really not much else.

To the best of my recollection, the 01's did not come with the garage opener.  Seems like my 04 SEEG was the first bike that came with the garage door opener....

Chip, this one is not painted.  The dark red is so dark you actually find yourself looking once or twice to make sure.  But the inner is just a flat black.  Oddly I don't think this was a universal thing as I have seen others that were black and others that were red over the years.  Almost as if Harley didn't always have red ones in that back building at York and grabbed flat black when they needed to.

Was just looking at the parts manual for the bike and there is a red inner listed.  Like many of other SERG specific parts sadly no longer available to order though.  So, some time, I'll do with it as you had done with your blue bird and get this one painted.

Thanks GD.  Have always loved the looks of the seats.  Hope it rides out well enough my ass doesn't make me change it.  All the other color work and details are nice.  This one has a black inner fairing though.  Have seen others that did before also.  Who knows what Harley was doing there.  This one does look to be a nice one though.  Thanks very much for the good words.

So I guess Don's explanation is correct.
Some got it and some didn't.
Thanks GPD!

 :2vrolijk_21:

Must have been added later Chip.  GDO nor alarm were stock.  Alarm is a more obnoxious install on 2000 model touring bikes also.  Staring in 01 the main harness was built with the addition of the harness already in mind.  2000s require the alarm hardware and an extra installation harness that's about a three hour chore to install if I remember right.

If the seat just blows uncontrollably I'll try the Corbin black seat with the maroon trim from the SEEG.  The tan Corbin seat is on it almost all the time anyway.  Unless the SEEG seat just misses mating to the dash by a mile the SERG would be a nice place to put it to more use.  Easy enough to swap back and forth as need might require too.  Checking fitment will be something to add to the to-do list right away.

Since we already have a Power Commander for you how about one more thing.
I have a 01 SERG inner fairing (same as a 00) unpainted that you can paint when you get that wild hair.
That way the bike will only be down for a day or so.
Just send me back yours after the swap.
That may be to much trouble but I know you like options.
