First Annual SERG Dyno Challenge
« on: June 10, 2008, 03:54:15 PM »

I'm taking the SERG up to Ft Smith Arkansas June 19-21 to get a Rolling Thunder Dyno Tune.  I will be trying to better Silver-Black's and TwoLane's previous dyno runs.  Sandy has agreed to give me a print out with all three graphs for comparison.  I think Texas 103 and 103tHunDer also posted some graphs on the SERG board earlier this year...  If anyone is in the area, I would really like to meet some of the characters in the CVO group.  Anyone interested?

Maybe we could have a couple of classes- 1) Stock with PC/SERT, 2) Aftermarket exhaust/AC with PC/SERT, and 3) Any motor with SERG tins on the frame...  Maybe firedood would donate his chrome tour pak hinges for first prize?

Mine and Don's are stock.
I thought all SERG's were stock!

Go for it!
Sandy will love it.

As much as dOOd whined about those hinges he better not sell, , , , even if he gets more than he paid.

The package was postmarked from "Joplin" so he was the one that "sent" it. I know others had there hands in it, but he's the only one I know definitely.

PS Don't make me talk to Nancy and she make you put mine on and not damage my tourpak. :P

This sounds like fun Robert.  Be sure and let me know before you head to meet Golden at the rally.  Here's my share for the curb chat/comparison.

I keep the records on a simple spread sheet for comparison and to add some notes as need be.  But the data is all still there.  Will try a screen shot the spread sheet here and in the next post will hang the spread sheet itself for potentially easier viewing.

Hey TwoLane-  Welcome back!  I am meeting the Goldens this saturday at 10am for a tuning session in Ft Smith at the HOG Rally.  I am somewhat disappointed at this point with my SERG.  I installed a SuperTrapp 2:1 and the USB PC3.  With a canned map from FuelinMoto I dynoed at about 80hp and 90tq.  The torque curve kicks in at about 2,500 rpms and stays up until 5,500.  I was hoping for better peak numbers.  We will soon see if Mr. Golden can find enough additional hp/tq to compare with you and Chip...

Mine is about the same with the exception of the Fatcats.  On different dynos we can't really compare the numbers; but as well as we can for the sake of discussion mine did come in earlier.

Right now I honestly don't have a clue what's going in 24 hours nonetheless five or six days.  But I'd love to watch the festivities in Fort Smith and will do my best to be there.

Robert,
Just wanted to apologize for not getting down to Fort Smith today.  My niece got the cast off her broken arm the day before and not getting to go to the pool had been killing her.  I'd promised that whenever it came off we'd go the next day.  So I had a little scheduling conflict.

Hope John has yours running in a way that is making you very happy.  Can't wait to see how you've done.

All SERGS are not created equal!  Met the Goldens on Saturday- great people.  Don and Chip have nothing to worry about.  My peak numbers were 83hp and 88tq- almost exactly the same as my numbers at the Harley shop in Corinth with the generic map from FuelMoto.  The A/F numbers look much better however.  I can't explain the low numbers- I guess I got the runt of the litter..  On a more depressing note, on the way back to Texas I noted that the bike pings badly over 3,500 rpms to redline from about 75% throttle to full throttle.  I would have thought this would be impossible with the air/fuel ratio right around 13:1 in those throttle settings. Any input concerning what could be wrong with my motor would be greatly appreciated- surely the SuperTrapp exhaust does not do that poorly compared with the FatCat or the ProPipe... ANYWAY-  Sandy said she would send Don the graph with all three bikes if someone could remind her of Chip's last name so she could locate his dyno chart.  Don- maybe we could hook up on the way to Joplin if I have to get some remapping done...

ANYWAY-  Sandy said she would send Don the graph with all three bikes if someone could remind her of Chip's last name so she could locate his dyno chart.  Don- maybe we could hook up on the way to Joplin if I have to get some remapping done...

Robert,
Just wanted to apologize for not getting down to Fort Smith today.

Don,

Took the glide in today for some misc stuff and was talking Rob the  tech at NTHD that does all my work, told him I thought mine was kind of a turd and hoped the tune up would take care of it, then I told him it was a Califonia bike....He remembers working on one that had different cams  for CA....not the 203's.. along with a different download which I expected. Have you or anyone else heard of this??? He's pulling it down for tensioners and I'm going back with 204's .. Keep you posted.. if that's the case that may explain some that are a little puny....Greg

I bought mine new from Zylstra HD in Ames, Iowa.  I probably can't use the "California model" as an excuse.  I will be very interested in hearing how the 204 does for you- it sounds like a better cam than the 203 in every way according to what I have read.

Not a clue Greg.  These 95's were so few and far between back in 2000/2001 that they were variation all by themselves.  Even slighter variations for California emissions differences within them I've never heard of.  But the quantity of them would have been so small it's not as if there'd have been that many to talk about.

Until proven otherwise it's as good a theory as any though.  Good luck on seeing it come to life.

Robert, I've only got one known data point for SuperTrapps on a 95.  At least one that I'm familiar with and saw myself enough to be comfortable I knew what happened.

That bike with stock cams never ran well.  He messed with it for most of a year.  Different exhaust and a retune and it was a much better behaving machine.  One data point is by no means enough to preach from.  But for what it's worth in that one case it proved to be a poor combination.

I'll check with Sandy and try to get the comparative dyno sheet for you.  Might be a few days.  Come to think of it I don't even know of they're home or still on the road.  But I'll get it from them sometime.

Talked with Sandy this last Monday.  I gave her both of Chip's last names (Chithead, McKenzie) so I imagine she will find the blue SERG's dyno sheet one way or another...  She said she would email Chip or Don with all three curves on one printout (I figured one of ya'll would be able to post much easier than I could).  Sandy was very gracious about my pinging problem and will be sending me another map in a couple of days.  I'm confident she will be able to get me a map that doesn't ping.  The issue remains why I am down 10 hp and 10 tq from Don's and Chip's bikes.  It is really not a "mine is bigger than yours" thing- I am just wondering what may be wrong with my motor.  That is too large of a gap for production tolerances and/or differences between 2:1 pipes.  Should I just start with the basics and have a mechanic check compression, leakdown etc?   Maybe when we can see all three curves someone will have some ideas...

It is a roughly 10% difference across the board.  I'd certainly start with checking things that could be checked without buying parts first though.  No sense in spending money for experimentation when it can still be avoided.

Just got it pulled down, It does in fact have 203's in it, but the tensioners are junk, 19,000 Miles, SO ...Going back with 204's , Send it over to Ed for good Direct Link Tune up and we'll see....

Praise to the Travel Gods for catching tensioners before they were gone far enough to do damage.  If nothing else is gained that is worth catchng.  Over the winter I'm going to gears just because I don't even want to have to think about them.

If the tensioners are junk - as long as you have it apart - take a look at your oil pump and make sure not to much trash went thru it.  Now would be the time to replace or upgrade it if it needs it...  Was the oil pressure good before you pulled it apart?

Well the answer is obvious.

But everyone knew that anyway!

I just looked at it no pics yet, the '99 & 2000 had the 1st gen Tensioners that were junk, Pump looks good, changing out all the bearings too,, 99-2000 had piss poor bearings. Damn I'm glad we had a look!! updating it with new stuff and 204's...good ole  extended warranty....Greg

Glad you got it taken care of before there was an issue!
More money, more money, that will take care of it.

That was the unusual and interesting part of this exercise Howie.  It really was three bikes from three different parts of the country all on the same dyno ran by the same very experienced guy.  That type of comparison is something we're rarely allowed.  Still only a curiosity.  But a good one.

That bearing change was about halfway through the 2000 model year.  Got any idea whether blues or reds came first that year?

Greg

Glad you got it taken care of before there was an issue!
More money, more money, that will take care of it.
With all the bikes you have, you have to be insurance poor!

That bearing change was about halfway through the 2000 model year.  Got any idea whether blues or reds came first that year?

Had to be the REDS....they are always Faster.......

Ok Robert, here you go.  Sandy just emailed me the three bike dyno chart.

Unfortunately she apparently doesn't have the final run with mine.  This run was part way through before we stopped for me to replace an embarassingly nasty air filter I'd not noticed and put in a new clutch spring to get rid of that dip that starts about 3200 and dives through 3800 or so on this run.

Looking at the torque curve: With the new air filter and changing the clutch spring mine started just about the same in the 2500 range, didn't get the dip at all and climbed to what'd be just about an even track with Chip's from about 3500 on.  His wins out by a point or so (yeah Blue bike :bananarock: !!) but it's interesting to see two very similarly equipped bikes in fact do two nearly identical runs.

The HP curves were about the same story.  After the filter change you could almost lay the two lines on top of each other.

Yours is only a bit down from there Robert.  10%-ish.  That's not a problem.  It's just something to look forward to whenever you decide to mess with it :2vrolijk_21: .

That was the unusual and interesting part of this exercise Howie.  It really was three bikes from three different parts of the country all on the same dyno ran by the same very experienced guy.  That type of comparison is something we're rarely allowed.  Still only a curiosity.  But a good one.

Sorry Don, you're 100% correct. I didn't go back and look at the whole thing before. I must apologize to all for my incorrect previous statement, based on Golden tuning ALL of the bikes. It's still not completely accurate with them all being tuned at different times, locations and weather conditions, but better than completely different tuners and dynos too. And so ya'll know, I was kinda funnin with ya'll though and wasn't very serious. After all, what do I really care! ;D ;D ;D

Sure thing.  Never even thought about it.  And like we said above, it's just an interesting curiosity.  No matter how alike the runs are they're still not identical.  Was a nice and fun comparison that we don't usually get to do though.

Even though there are always difference I was really surprised by how very similar Chip's blue bike and the other red bike's final run were.  I've only got the numbers spreadsheeted and Sandy didn't have the very last run saved.  But those are bikes that are similarly set up right now and produced runs you could almost lay on top of each other.

That's good to hear. Couldn't ask for a more capable guy to be doing them all. :2vrolijk_21:

I've got an interesting comparison to post when I can get my sheets posted. One shows a comparison between a stock '08 Stage I SEUC plotted with my WOT run. Mine doesn't yield very much more max torque. But mine's everywhere (flat curve) with the HP to match it. The stocker is a dog and only makes that TQ for a short duration and starts later. That's what Brian's talking about when he inquires about speed. I've got a few interesting charts and pics. They'll be up by tomorrow! ;)

Cool.  Looking forward to it.  The raw numbers themselves don't mean a thing.  The comparisons can be very informative both for just before/after changes and for diagnostic purposes.  That is often very good data without regard to what the numbers are that lay over the of the runs.

Now the next time I can find Mr. Golden we can try to give it another whirl.
I changed the ProPipe for the Fatcat.
That should be an interesting comparison with everything else being the same except for the pipe and the tune.
What's the bets gonna be?
Better numbers with the FatCat or the ProPipe?

I'd remembered incorrectly.  Thought you'd already gone to the FatCats when John had spun yours.  If not then our final spins were very very close to each other while having similar but not identical exhausts.

Bet the FatCats bring it in a little earlier.  You'll probably still be on top of the other red bike but it may not be in earlier any longer.  That was the most important difference the butt dyno told me when the FatCats went on.

I am planning to go gears in the next year also.  What cams are you considering, Don?

Not in to the question far enough to know for sure yet Robert.  Know it's a winter project.  But that's all I know for sure right now.

If I can convince myself to touch up the heads at the same time and use slightly heftier springs I'd have to at least consider Dave Mackie's 590 cam.  It's hard to knock Mackie's efforts.

That cam is also the slightly smaller sibling of the 598 that is working so well in the red bike.  Truth is I don't have a clue yet what I actually will use.  But for those reasons the Mackie 590 will at least be a consideration.

If your changing the cams it sure is tempting to do the heads also.  I'm sure that would be the best bang for the buck.  Thanks for posting the graph!

And there begins the slippery slope.  If cams why not touch up the heads.  If the heads are off why not flow work.  If really working the heads why not head and piston combinations with the cams.  If the cylinders are off anyway why not drop on just a bit more displacement.  Do that might as well throw on a throttle body and a fuel pressure regulator to make the Marelli drink a little easier.  Damn, those cheap chain tensioners get expensive fast.
