Windshield Headache
« on: April 13, 2009, 03:05:09 PM »

I've read all the posts on the different windshields out there for our bikes. I had a KW 12" put on right after I bought the bike and hated it so it was returned. I read with great interest Doc's review of the CB 14" and 15" windshields. His review pretty much sold me on the CB but I am now wondering which one. I am 6'3" and when sitting on a stock RG with a stock shield I have no trouble seeing over it, it hits me about the chin. If you measure the stock windshield it is 16". So I wonder if I should get the CB 15" or 16". I realize my stock seat is a tad lower than the stock seat but I will be upgrading to something with more padding for my long trips. So the headache continues.......  :freak:

Greg

PS... Then a recent read where someone totally hats the CB! I will still go with the CB because it was designed with the stock CVO gasket in mind.

The CB is bullchit - just my 2 Cents.
throw away your bucks , you have the same result , worse than stock . But try it , you could have mine , a CB15" dark , i am 6.1 , turbulences all over , removed it and put on the stock one ( that is better ).

Elmo, Im still looking, Tried the KW and hated it worst shield ever encountered, only rode it seven miles, ClearView tall was great for wind protection and clarity, I could not get used to the look, My CB 14 in  has considerable turbulance above 60 mph somewhat better then the KW but not nearly as good as the CV, The new Kuryakyn RG shield looks promising but im waiting for feedback from another member who ordered one, don't be in a hurry to buy a CB just yet, I was one of the first purchasers and got a substantial discount, if I had paid MSRP I would be very umnhappy.

Well that sucks.  After reading everyone's reviews, I thought the CB 14 was the way to go and ordered one a few days before I picked up the bike.  I got an email from them saying their mold had been damaged and the shipment would be delayed.  I just got the shipping confirmation late last week and it is supposed to be here on Thursday.  I guess it won't be the first thing I ever bought that I didn't like or use...  :nixweiss:

If you're 6ft or taller, the 14 is too short

I have been considering just putting a stock clear windshield. It will give me time to figure out the best windshield for me. At least I know what to expect from a stock shield, it bites paying big bucks for a windshield that you don't like!  :sauer005:

I'm 6'2" with a 34" IS and have a Saddlemen seat that sits a little higher than stock.  The 15" CB is too short for me--16" would be better or 17" would probably be great, but they don't make it.  So I may go the Extra Large CV route.  May just put the stock one back on for now.

I spoke with Doug at WindVest and he has an interest adapting their wind shield to th CVO gasket. The recurve on the WinVest is supossed to to be good for a three inch lift of the air wave. I'll post further info :2vrolijk_21:

stock windshield too low
HD 2 inch over too high I am 5' 10"
tried the clear view and it worked great for me but the windscreen collapsed for my passenger.  if you are one up riding this was the best I have tried .  2 up not good.  can't remember the size I had before it was returned.
For whatever it's worth: At Az bike week CW was there and a guy was testing a taller windscreen for a RG.  He said it was a prototype.  You might call cw and see what the skinny is on the product.
Good luck

To all that are complaining about the stock windscreen on the SE's. Is it safe to assume none of you wear full-face helmets? I don't have one (obviously) and my last cruiser was a Valkyrie Interstate that I had about a 5" windscreen on it (way shorter than stock) and didn't have any complaints. I did wear a full-face helmet most of the time (Shoei, Arai and Scorpion) and a 3/4 helmet (cheap HJC) once in a while. I am used to full face helmets from many years of sportbikes. Still like 'em and I'm 58.

Been looking for the right windshield for me too, I'm 6'4.5" I just talked to a KW rep last week and he told me about the new 16" shield they've developed. I decided to be the guinea pig and ordered one. It should be here this week. Here is a pic of the prototype he sent me. I ordered the 16" light tint. I will let you know how it goes.

Well, I think my headache is over. Got my CV 15 light tint yesterday. Held up to the bike and said "ok, this could work" so I went about the install. Little tricky since I'm using the H-D chrome trim, ok, very tricky. But I got it. It's not as sporty as the KW or CB, but has a little flair, kinda like me. I sat on the bike and I still can see over the top fine. I measured from the instrument panel to the top edge of the shield, 13".

I am 6'1" and have 34 inch legs, and the CB14 is too short, I am thinking the CB 15 or maybe something else.

I love the looks of the CB14, just for a 300 to 500 mile day, I could not hand that much buffeting.

Put my Clearview GT Med light grey tint on last week and WOW what a nice windshield. Quiet and I can just see over the top by about 1-2 inches depending on how I'm sitting. Thick and quality all the way. No sound or wind at all. Love it.

Hey Larry,

The CV shield looks great. Is that a "GT Large", or something custom?

Hey Indenial,

Could you post a pic or two. I'm considering buying the CV GT Medium. It would be great to see what one looks like.

Larry,

The CV 15 shield you just put on your bike, is that the CV GT-Medium, or GT Large?  I have the CV GT Stock Height on my SERG, and I do get some buffeting on the top of the helmet above 60 mph.  Might need to go up an inch or two on the shield height.  I'm 6' 0" with at 31" I word.

I am 6'1" and have 34 inch legs, and the CB14 is too short, I am thinking the CB 15 or maybe something else.

I love the looks of the CB14, just for a 300 to 500 mile day, I could not hand that much buffeting.

Dave,  or anyone else.  I just got in my 15" Cee Bailey's dark gray windshield and it's too short for me.  I had it on the bike for approx. 25 miles.  If you or anyone else needs a 15" dark one, send me an email and I'll give you a good price and ship it right away.    sdavis49  at   agristar.net

Well after much pain and thought, I just ordered a CV Medium windshield. John with CV told me the windshield comes with a clear coating on it so you can install it and try it out. If you don't like it just send it back no questions asked, which made me VERY happy. But if you take the coating off its yours. Just thought I would let you guys know if you order one of these things you can get your money back if you don't remove the cover (and don't like it).

I'll give you guys a full report when I get it installed. :2vrolijk_21:

I guarantee, you'll want to take of the protective coating, Unless you want to look like a dork.

I sold my CB 15" as it was too short for me but I haven't got another to try yet.  I also had an  aftermarket seat that raised me up a little, I think so maybe the 15" would have worked with the stock seat. I'm  6'2" with 34 inseam but 16 or 17" would be better with what I have now.

I also sold mine , 6.1 with 33 inse.... , signature seat , no BSR ride possible , too much turbulences .
I ordered the Windvest 12" , seems to have the strongest recurve and will see whether the look hurts me again , i hope not .

I have two 12" WV on their way (gun smoke and dark smoke, should have ordered a clear also!). UPS says they will be here Monday. I went with the 12" based on measurements posted in another thread (about 10 1/2" of actual vertical height). The re-curve is supposedly like adding extra height, I'm skeptical. If it indeed does work I'll be able to drop down to a 10" (not holding my breath). Pics to follow upon install..............

Someone wanted this pic. Clearview Gt Medium, light grey tint--Perfect. By the way, why does everyone list and inseam when choosing a windshield?  My knees aren't looking through it----the real distance of importance is the one from your butt to your eyes and depends on which seat you are using.

If you take two people that are 6'4" and one has a 32" inseam and the other has a 34" inseam, the one with the 34" inseam will have a shorter torso (2 more inches of their height is in their legs).  Therefore, the 34" inseam's eyesight would be approximately 2" lower than the same height person with a 32" inseam.... :confused5: :2vrolijk_21:

Indenial,

I was the one that had asked you to post a pic of the Clearview. It looks awesome. It sounds like that's the way to go. You seem to be happy with yours, and so does LarryB. Thanks for the pic. It helped me make my decision.
