LED Brake/Tail Light on Classic SERG
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:07:01 PM »

Won't matter as much (or at least will matter differently) to the modern SERG crowd.  To those of us with the Classic SERGs, however, this was to me a pleasant surprise.

Didn't know until taking it out of the box that the new LED light Harley offers was chrome all the way around.  At first didn't like the idea of losing the complementary red lens against the red fender of the SERG.

Then held it up back there and was reminded of the big honking rear light bar that I was never that fond of to begin with.  But it's an OE part of what makes this bike a CVO.  So the light bar stays.  The chrome lens outer body flows to the new light bar wonderdully though.  A nice complement to the light bar that softens it's hard straight lines.  Makes the whole ass end of the bike look a little better.  Now just hope the LED light is good from the rear with a trailing sun.

And after with the new light's chrome body filling the area adjacent to the light bar.

Don,
Looks good :2vrolijk_21:... any reason you didn't go w/the smoked lense to match the turn signals?

State law here Gary.  Brake light must have a red lens.

I learned this because the SEEG has a smoked lens LED light.  Twice I've been pulled over and told it needs to be red.  By the same state trooper on the same stretch of road.  One of these days he is going to lose patience.

Odd thing is I have no idea how he can tell.  Anytime the bike is on with the tail light illuminated it looks red.  State Trooper Magic Vision or something.  However he does it I decided against tempting fate (and the Missouri Highway Patrol) any more than necessary.

Also wasn't sure it was the most correct choice visually.  You can't tell it from the close up photo.  But the air wing tour pak rack has a red light.  The fender tip is a red light.  The brake light made a consistent red center line.

Thanks Neal.  I lucked out with this one.  Ten minute effort that was a surprising degree of improvement and even made the parts around it better.

State law here Gary.  Brake light must have a red lens.

.......
Your post had me wondering if they were legal in the state of Virginia so I checked Virginia Codes - Inspection Requirements for Motorcycles and it states the following..

C. Rear lamp.

Inspect for and reject if:

1. The high beam indicator does not burn when the high or "country" beam is on or does not go off when the low beam is on.

2. Motorcycle is not equipped with a rear lamp of approved type SAE-T-S-P-A).

3. Lamp is not mounted near rear of vehicle, or is not mounted securely, or if lamp does not make a good electrical connection.

4. Lenses are not red to the rear and clear or amber to the front or any lens has a piece broken from it. The lens may have one or more cracks provided an off-color light does not project through the crack(s).

NOTE: LED (light emitting diode) lights with a clear lens are acceptable if of an approved type. For those vehicles that are equipped with a multiple LED light (not filament burning bulbs), they will pass inspection if more than 50% of the diode lights are burning.

5. Filaments in all lamps do not burn when headlamp switch is turned on to any position.

6. The rear license plate is not illuminated by an approved license plate lamp.

The above underlined would lead me to believe if I wanted I could use the clear lens version. :nixweiss: Damn!!!... this spending other peoples money may have just backfired on me.... That light might look good w/my smoked turn signal lenses..... Hmmmmm. :-\

I would've gloated that this time you were the one that found a part and had to go spend a little $$$.  But I just got hosed by some tour pak rear and side LEDs that were shown on the other site that I didn't know about before.  Dammit  :huepfenlol2: .

Back to this light....

Now that you've got me thinking about it.... How easy/what is required to install it??

Please tell me it is a PITA and will require cutting wires or metal so I can cross it off the wishlist. :huepfenlol2:
